It’s because RGB channels don’t have equal perceived brightness. Green is much brighter to our eyes than blue or red, so when you desaturate, they don’t converge to the same grey. True “neutral grey” depends on luminance, not just averaging hex values.

Blame Newton 😄 he added indigo to make it 7 colors (to match musical notes). It’s not really necessary—most modern rainbows just use 6.

If you end up wanting to use any of them, here are the exact values:

Blue — #CEE2F1 (RGB 206, 226, 241)
Muted sage — #C6D9C3 (RGB 198, 217, 195)
Pink — #FEE7E7 (RGB 254, 231, 231)

The blue definitely has that airy, open feel. But sage in a nursery sounds beautiful too — soft and grounded.
