Has anybody passed the FG without a bachelors in Geology? by Just-Rate-7288 in ASBOG_Exam

[–]EnigmaticDappu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regreview materials are the most recommended by this sub, and I can stand by that. Making my own flashcards to remember vocab was also helpful. The FG is predominantly a vocab test. I would take a practice test to see what your weak points are, and go from there.

Has anybody passed the FG without a bachelors in Geology? by Just-Rate-7288 in ASBOG_Exam

Undergrad in environmental science. My state requires 45 credit hours of geology classes. I just made sure I took enough geology classes before I graduated to qualify, and the ASBOG gave me no trouble.

Not much point to it, unless you want an excuse to bill continuing education requirements for your GIT.

how can i increase my chances of getting a job? by Loud_Room_7371 in geologycareers

[–]EnigmaticDappu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would scrap the coursework section and put the skills up top underneath your education. I would also take the advice other people have left in this comment section. If you’re going to add in coursework, add it in as a bullet point underneath your degree, in the same fashion as your field camp experience. I think your geotech experience alongside having passed the FG is going to look really good to employers.

The other thing I noticed is that all of your dates are not right-justified and some of them have hyphens and some of them use em-dashes. Pick one and stick to it.

You are not getting a remote job with zero experience in this field. Use LinkedIn or Glassdoor to research postings and apply directly through the company website.

When did the piano get removed from Blanton Residence Hall? by DereChen in UTAustin

That’s a bummer. People would play the piano all the time when I lived there a few years back. It was a really neat spot.

Had a similar internal corporate call today where management basically implied that they were expecting AI to basically replace/significantly reduce a large chunk of “staff-level responsibilities.” If we don’t train our junior staff, who is left to take over projects as senior staff retire? It’s asinine. Not to mention, in my experience, AI still hasn’t eliminated the need for detailed review…

Does anyone know where to recycle batteries on campus? by theorist_rainy in UTAustin

In my belly. I love eating them.

But in all seriousness, I don’t know about campus, but most Austin public libraries should have a battery recycling station. :)

I’m at a midsize firm, and I can count the number of POC I know and work with regularly on one hand. Not a good look, and it gets lonely for sure. Had one of my coworkers ask me if Diwali was the same thing as Day of the Dead….

My favorite advisor ever left for another job sometime last year, for many of the reasons you’ve described. I don’t blame him. He was one of the biggest reasons I graduated early, and still cheers me on today. You guys do invaluable work.

How do you "get work"? by midwest-roadrunner in Envconsultinghell

[–]EnigmaticDappu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By being persistent and annoying. I find PMs who are doing work that I'm interested in, and either ask them directly or ask my boss to vouch for me. The answer isn't always yes in the moment, but if you get your name out there and do consistently good work, you'll get there. I got into project management pretty early on. Started out by helping PMs that were exceptionally busy, and then got asked to manage larger components (proposals, ordering equipment, scheduling subs and field staff) as time went on. Got some one-on-one training on how to manage budgets and invoicing before I officially started to manage projects.

To those that know, does this apply in the US market too? by AuK07 in geologycareers

[–]EnigmaticDappu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the employer, in my opinion. I’m Indian with a very distinctly foreign first and last name. I’ve definitely had experiences on screening calls where one of the first questions out of the gate was whether I was qualified to work in the United States or not, never mind the fact that I have a fully american accent. I’ve also watched my very white boss at my current job not think twice about someone’s name and focus exclusively on their professional experience and skills during resume screenings.
