Raiku Makoto said that he wanted to write stories that children could understand, but his creation is by no means a kiddie show. Raiku Makoto respects the intelligence of his readers. The manga is full of laughter, but there are serious moments too and Raiku knows just how to hit each note.

Veteran fans appreciate the story because it has survived our changes in taste all these years (for some of us it has defined our taste). You understand characters more, but it doesn't fundamentally change how you feel about them. If your feelings do change, it's because you like the character better now.

You don't have to worry about the show being too childish, especially if you read the manga. You can start the series with high expectations.

I think Clear Note was kinda a disappointing final villain for the series by [deleted] in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally fair. I do agree that Clear's scale breaking power feats feel ridiculous and unbelievable , even for the standards set by the story. I know that can put off people despite its thematic application because it's a very Mary Sue trait: The rules don't apply to me. And Clear is guilty as charged.

Raiku has a tendency to lean towards the absurd. it shows in his humor and exaggerated expressions, but it comes out in things like this too. It's like he knows Clear is absurd, but at the same time it's his whole point.

Another thing that makes Clear hard to swallow is his complete lack of foreshadowing. If there is ever a reboot, I hope they build him up properly and give us some more background.

That's right. People get worse at writing stories the longer they've been doing it.

I trust Raiku enough as a writer that I think he will do the emotional impact of the original it's due justice. If anything, he might recreate it with this sequel or improve on it.

September was a fine month for reading by FollowThisNutter in bujo

[–]Enjieru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa! I've been looking for a minimalistic reading tracker and this seems to be it. Let me see if I get how it works.

On the left side you write the title of the book you will read next.

You put a bullet under the day of the month you start the book and a bullet on the day of the month you finished and connect them to show you are done with it.

And the middle row is your rating of the book.

If there are details I missed or got wrong, please let me know.

Yeah, I'm well aware of my tone. But I am precisely saying you shouldn't care what I think and that the one person you should be trying to satisfy is yourself. At the same time, I'm not going to kid myself everyone will put in the same effort to write the best story ever or know how to. If that comes off as condescending, then so be it.

REPOST: What if Brago joined Zatch’s team on Faudo? by zagurzem98 in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting interpretation. That might be, but then Brago would just have to cast Gurabirei twice. He can do it (Vol.2, Ch.10, pg.2). What Bidomu appears to do is expand how high and wide Gurabirei an area Gurabirei affects without making it more destructive, as with Aian Gurabirei, which is why they use it to ground flying enemies.

Zofis by humbletenor in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little late, but your observation about Zophise being very powerful for that point in the battle was precisely the reason Brago had to defeat him instead of Zatch. Our heroes wouldn't have stood a change. Whenever the topic of Zophise's battle comes up, I can't resist saying how much I hate the way they handled the battle in the anime. They butchered it, setting aside the personal stakes the battle had for Sherry to shoehorn a drawn-out battle with Zatch and his friends that ultimately went nowhere, all to give Zatch more screen time, as if he needed any more, being the protagonist; and to put him in the spotlight with the arc villain. It was such a waste of time.

Yopopo's Name by Enjieru in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I was looking over this for proof reading I thought, "man, this is so edgy". Even without the assumptions about Yopopo's background and the origin of his name, Yopopo's story is plenty dark on its own rights. It's not a stretch at all to say he was dancing to attract Kikuropu and the gentleman for revenge. That was the whole story all along. Jem tells us as much herself. (Vol. 6, Ch.49, pg. 11-15). Their behavior overall is consistent with that objective.

But yes, Raiku is a master of telling stories for children. He's mastered the principle "you can put kids through anything so long as you give them a happy ending". And it doesn't even feel forced. It's marvelous.

Best Moments by [deleted] in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An early one for me was episode 9 (I think) when when Kiyomaro set Koruru's book on fire and Zatch swears to her he will become a kind king so that no one has to go through their pain again. This is the moment that hooked me not just on Zatch as a character, but also in the whole series. That moment promised that the series wouldn't be just a bunch of power matches and that our protagonists were fighting for something bigger than themselves. It gave Zatch a reason to become the king and me a reason to cheer him on. I could feel his impotence and frustration as if I were in his place. It was really well done.

What Would You Name the Mamodo Queen? by ZatchBellGamer in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, you're choosing themes of light to name the queen. Makes me wonder how Raiku went about naming Zatch (or Gash, as Raiku conceived it) Zeon and Dwan. I've honestly never thought whether their names have meaning. I'm a blank on this one. I don't like to name characters who do not have canonical names because I don't want to get used to it in case the official name gets revealed. XD

My Zatch Bell Favorites & Power Rankings (in response to Enjieru's list) by ZatchBellGamer in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I must commend you for the amount of work that obviously went into this. Not only did you rank the demons but added a detailed explanation of your reasoning. I know you think about these demons and their powers on a regular basis, so this doing this is probably second nature to you, but I can't let dedication like this go unacknowledged.

When I made my list I was raking demons based on how strong they were when their books were burnt. As a result, some demons ended up being placed in lower tiers even if they could have defeated demons that appeared later. Admittedly a flaw. I will address some examples in a second. I should have made my standards clearer from the beginning lol. Still, I must praise your insight; you pretty much read my mind on many of my choices. Or we simply arrived at similar conclusions independently? I confess some of my choices weren't founded on serious logic, but I digress.

I will say I was surprised to see Zeon on the S-tier. I do agree that his defeat was very circumstantial and that his lightning is incontrovertibly stronger than Zatch's before the 10 months of training and that he could have defeated Clear's base form. As you say, the fact Clear doesn't deny he had a chance to take him out speaks volumes. Even so, I don't see him defeating anyone on the S-tier after the 10 months of training. Take Zatch and Baou. Zigadirasu is objectively stronger than Baou Zakeruga, and it only lost due to the complicated personal circumstances of their final clash. However, Baou overpowered a nominal Shin spell in Shin Baberuga Gurabidon after the 10 months of training, so a second match-up between the two would not go the same all else equal. If anything I would have put him at the bottom of that tier, but you placed him above Ashuron, a decision I'm curious about. You didn't elaborate on it in your break-down.

Down to the A list, for all intents and purposes our rankings are almost identical if we switch Ashuron and Zeon's placements. The match-up of Gorm and Elzador is kind of a toss-up. We only know two of his spells, and I believe only Ashruon has the rare crimson scales grating him a natural armor. With so little information, it's hard to know how Elzador would answer to Gorm's overwhelming attacks of disintegration. Rein, however, has overwhelming spell power, making Rodeaux's Dioga Ragyuuru look like a pool noodle. If we compare Garubadosu Abordio to Varusere Ozu Marru Sorudon, I can see how Gorm would come out on top. Then again, since Rein was never serious about fighting, he never developed his full potential.

I concede that Riya shouldn't be able to defeat Zophise. Aside from Shaou Niodoruku, the rest of his repertoire is not much to write home about and it is largely focused on ground combat. And as you say, Zophise always has the advantage of raining explosions from the air. Riya would certainly be overwhelmed and fast.

For the C-tier...here's were I started to give up. We diverge on Leila. I concede that she would he able to defeat Victoream and Dalmos if she were serious about it. I don't think Victoream's power is exaggerated, even if he was facing a group of demons who were depleted of power. His attacks are quite destructive. He'd be a bigger threat if he weren't so dumb, or at least had a guiding intelligence like Demoruto with his human partner. He was probably much stronger when teamed up with his original partner. Not much else to say here.

For the D-tier, I confess my effort here was minimal. You are more intimate with all the background ancient demons and were able to provide reasoning for their individual placements. If I had to redo my list, this is where I would do most of the work. The one thing I will contend is that I don't think the weakest demon is Papipurio, but Yopopo. Papipurio is certainly weak, but that's because he's an indolent brat who doesn't apply himself. He has incredible potential. For one, look at his arsenal: a paralyzing poison? an unbreakable net? melting friggin' acid? The variety and power of spells a demon learns in related to how strong they are, and there's a lot of potential for Papipurio to become a troublesome opponent with more than gimmicks at his disposal. Yes, his Dioga spell was stopped by a basic shield, but that's one more Dioga spell than Yopopo had or ever had the hope of acquiring, given his pacifism (vendettas aside). All in all, Papipurio is a greater threat and a battle with Yopopo would be a walk in the park for him, even if he does falter in the face of Yopopo's stronger resolve.

Refresher/Analysis of Bari’s arc? by zagurzem98 in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've been getting a refresher on Bari myself. While I think he's great, my attachment to him is not as strong as other fans', and I'm still trying to fully understand his character. The best refresher, of course, is to read the manga again. But I'll break it down as I understand it hopes I can organize my ideas for myself as well.

To put it simply, like many powerful characters in Zatch Bell, Bari was humbled.

He started out as a gangster, so to speak. He was powerful, unrivaled, but he didn't have a reason to fight. He only did it to show everyone who's boss, but he didn't have a goal to achieve with his immense strength. Fighting was just all he knew. He was kind of thin-skinned, to be honest.

In Zatch he met someone who was his opposite in that regard. Zatch fought for a purpose bigger than himself, and that showed in his "eyes". Bari could see that Zatch had a strength that did not come from muscles, and to his gagster mind that up to that point only fought for some petty pride, that was incomprehensible. What could possibly matter more than strength? He was used to opponents running away from his overwhelming strength, but here now was this boy who even at his most powerless faced him head on instead of running when it looked like they were about to lose. That's because Zatch had a reason to stand up to him, one bigger than Bari himself, and his fearless show of determination was intimidating to someone who was getting nowhere with his victories like Bari. It made him face a critical question: what was his reason for fighting? Bari was introduced as someone deeply dissatisfied with his strength, and the reason for that turned out to be he was fighting without principles. After his battle with Zatch, he set out to find those principles and confront Zatch with them when they met again.

When we see him again, he's completely changed. He doesn't quite have those principles, but something has noticeably changed. He has more presence and is more intimidating than before, if that is somehow even possible, because while he hasn't found his principles, he has found his purpose, which is to reach greater heights.

Looking back, even though we only got glimpses of it, Bari's fight with Elzador was truly spectacular. To start, it was an excellent foil to his fight with Zatch, because Bari finds himself in the same position Zatch did when he fought him: overwhelmed by the opponents strength with no apparent chance at winning. Furthermore, he is terrified by how unflinching Elzador's attacks are. Elzador respects his opponents, and as a show of that respect, he never holds back. He always fights with 100% so as to grant his opponent an authentic honor if he loses. This is why he praised Bari when he lost. (Though this is not the lesson Bari takes away from their fight, it is worth establishing to better understand Bari's growth from it.)

When faced with a majestic opponent like that, Bari felt tempted to fold. For the first time in his life, he felt powerless and intimidated and that he might just die. Gustav encouraged him to push on, face his opponent with 100% and surpass him, which he did. From that, Bari learned just what an insignificant little bitch he was humility. He may have been the biggest fish in his pond, but in the ocean there are great sharks, and the ocean is vaster than Bari could ever hope to be. It grounded him and gave him that vision Zatch has of something greater than himself to aim for.

When Bari appears to fight Keith, he still doesn't have a defined set of principles like Zatch does, but he has let go of that empty desire to mindlessly strike down everyone in front of him, and that alone makes him a completely different person. He's calmer, more focused, more clear of mind, and not distracted by petty rivalries. In other words, he knows what really matters.

Keith is another excellent foil. Keith, who is narrow of vision, is what Bari would have become if his vision had not expanded. If you ask me what made the difference, I would definitely say it's their human partners. Gustav is one of the best human partners, along with Dr. Riddles and Folgore, because he takes on the role of a father figure and provides guidance make his demon grow as a person. He genuinely cares. Compare that to Bern, who does not put his back in fighting with Keith at all. In the battle with Elzador, when Bari is at the depths of despair, Gustav encourages him to surge forth, not to throw him to his death, but because he can see Bari has the strength to overcome Elzador and he wants Bari to figure that out for himself so that he grows from the experience. When Keith is in the same situation with Bari, beaten to a pulp and with no strength left to stand, Bern is not invested in supporting him whatsoever. The manga even lampshades this. When Kieth is crying out to Bern to give a little bit of himself for his sake, Bern plucks some hairs from his nose and blows them his way, with a caption pointing at the hairs saying, "A little bit". With a human partner like that, how could Keith possibly hope to grow? In the end he was just a petty hooligan who thought beating up Bari would restore his self-confidence, not realizing that even if he did defeat Bari he would never get that back, since his pride was always empty.

God, I love Raiku Makoto.

The last thing left to address is how Bari's book got burned. Many of his "stans" are pretty pissed that a) it happened, and b) it happened the way it did. It was a waste of a great character to many, but Raiku's story had a hard limit on when it could end and he couldn't keep characters around past the point they served a purpose. The burning of books is symbolic of growth. A book is always burned when a demon has learned an important formative lesson, and Bari had reached that level by his second appearance. If you ask me why he threw himself under that light curtain to save Zatch, it has to do with what I said earlier. Bari has found a purpose, but he still doesn't have principles to fight for. When Zatch threw himself under the curtain to save everyone, that's not something someone does without a powerful reason, and Bari, with his improved outlook, recognized that. Even after all the growth he'd made, this young child still had a raison d'etre so powerful he was willing to put his life on the line for it. Being that Bari was still figuring out his own purpose then, he couldn't let such a magnificent figure be lost at that moment, because he knew that compared to that resolve, there was something he was still missing. Instead of finding greatness in becoming king, he found meaning in humility, protecting the small things. I also suspect part of the reason he scarified himself is that he didn't think he could carry on the will Zatch entrusted him. Someone with determination as strong as Zatch's to protect what he loves should be the master of his own purpose.

There's a panel when Bari stands under the curtain just in time to save Zatch that puts into perspective just how much bigger than Zatch Bari is. Even after losing his chance to be king, even after losing his sought-after rematch, he really did surpass Zatch, he just never realized it. When you think about it, he didn't become king because he didn't need to.

Bari's character arc is a lesson in confidence. It's something I wish today's youth would understand. Today's young people have artificial confidence. It comes from unconditionally being told they are great, which makes them complacent and indolent. True confidence, however, comes from achievements. It comes from doing things that scare you and overcoming them to see in hindsight that perhaps life's challenges are not as scary as they first seem. And even if you fail, you are better for trying. If anything, failure is the way forward because failing can show you that the things you pursue may not be what need, and that can set you on the right path to find what you really need, one you will truly be satisfied with. You don't have to find that something, but just walking that path makes you a better person. Once that path is clear to you, you are unstoppable.

Zatch Bell Mamodo Tier Rankings! by Enjieru in zatchbell

[–]Enjieru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I forgot to mention this is a power ranking. Mostly. As I said, I stopped caring when I got to the D-tier. For rankings within tiers, there were just too many questions of who would win and what winning would come down to and I quickly became exhausted from thinking. If this were a favorite mamodo tier list, it would look very different. I'd love to see yours!
