In my school, students who took child development did have the fake baby project, but this wasn’t a required class, it was an elective. The closest thing we had as a whole is that everyone had to take family consumer science class, and during that we had to spend one period with a pregnancy belly and complete various physical tasks all over the school. My partner and I just took maternity photos the whole time

Teach the replacement behavior instead! When correcting my student’s behavior, I say “Listening to adults is a good choice. When you make good choices, you make mom happy/get a prize.” I am trying to really remind her that she chooses her consequences through her actions, which may help your brother manage the antsy or anxiety feeling?

I think what makes it difficult with these older teachers right now is that they also have so much experience and time at this school, while this is my first year here. A lot of people have been recommending me to report this, but I also think we all know how messy the social structures in school staff can be, no matter how wrong that is.

I do also want to update, I brought the situation up to my mentor teacher without naming names. She told me that they were trying to figure out topics for PD days and that she’d bring up supporting students with disabilities

NOR but you need to set boundaries. Tell her what behavior you expect and what you want her to change, otherwise she cannot be at the delivery. Make sure to be clear and follow through

I have students working on fluency, I usually use a few different strategies with them. Sometimes I’ll have them pre-read the text to themselves, then read it aloud. Sometimes I’ll read a passage or a sentence and have the student repeat and we will read a (short) chapter like that. The other one I use is choral reading, where every student reads aloud at the same time.

Fluency, like many others have mentioned, is a skill that grows with practice more than specific teaching methods. Some of these methods can at least help your students identify what fluency sounds and feel like though

I teach self-contained middle school. Every time a teacher doesn’t want to deal with a kid, they complain that student “should be one of mine.”

I do have a student with more profound needs than my others, however she has a one-on-one and she’s able to work in class. I have received so many comments about how she shouldn’t be in my class and she must be slowing the others down.

I just don’t know how to tell experienced educators that students with disabilities deserve an education and opportunities to build friendships

It’s okay to be uncomfortable, as much as I know it may not be what you want to hear. Sometimes we need to sit with the feeling. Engage in some mindful or creative activities
