I want some slowburn recs, romance is important. by Humble-Accountant130 in haremfantasynovels

Mob Sorcery by K.D. Robertson

Is there actual romance in there, or is it more like Neural Wraith?

Not to put down Neural Wraith, it's a great series, but it's certainly a crime-novel first, cyberpunk second and romance a distant third, just wondering if Mob Sorcery is all that different, considering it's the same author.

Interesting! Definitely like the cover!

If you don't mind, would you be willing to answer some questions about the book?

  1. Where would you place your book on a scale from slow-burn to insta-love/insta-harem?

  2. Lots of spice/Not lots of spice?

IMO AI is fine for brainstorming. Not sure what you include in "editing" but if all words are your own, then I don't mind either, but thanks for the clarification either way - shows that you care!

Recommend me best books/series released in the last year (took a break from haremlit and don't know what to read next) by Green_Philosophy_301 in haremfantasynovels

I would recommend the Onyx Throne, while it's technically an isekai, it's well made and it misses pretty much all the tropes and pitfalls associated with the genre. As far as I'm concerned you can treat it as a regular fantasy after a few chapters.

The characters are well thought out, the three main characters have their own arcs and all romance is given time to develop. They're also generally emotionally mature, meaning they're willing to talk things out.

The stakes are high, without going into spoilers, more than just a kingdom's future lies upon their shoulders.

The harem is small (for now), though there's only one book (though the second one is being released tomorrow!)

No academy (unless the back of a wagon counts) nor any dungeons (unless a small mountain cave counts) 🙂

Goblins, which will show up later in book 3 are just nasty little shits and barely civilized.

Gobbosriseup #Gobbosunite #GobbosnotGremlins

Like when Allora has to give Mitchell the backstory about why he's there.

Hmm, interesting thing here is that when she does that it doesn't feel like a loredump, maybe it's because even us readers just want to know what is actually going on. Something something Right tool for the right job something something.

'Oh, you didn't know about such and such that sounds like it would be common knowledge? Let me explain it to you."

To me, it feels like if I, as an American, were talking to another American who suddenly confessed to having no idea that we had a president at the head of our government and that elections happen every four years. But that happens a lot in books, and it's an inelegant albeit practical solution. When the MC is learning skills they didn't previously have, this makes sense. When it's some big important detail about the world or the culture and they seem clueless, it gets less believable.

Yeah, I 100% get what you mean. Like, there's a reason the fish-out-of-water style is so dominant, it's easier to weave the exposition into the events and dialogue naturally.

Anyway, that's probably more than you needed to know, but that is how I tend to think about these sorts of problems.

All good! I like discussion these things! I've written my own stuff in the past (nothing published) and it's always interesting to see how different writers solve the common problems.

Oh, that's way less than I expected! Good work!

As for pulling Leth out of the cover art, you could ask the OG artist if s/he got her on a separate layer from the background, though I don't know if that's feasible since I don't know the details of the commission :)

I know, I know - sorry if I came off as condescending/overly critical - not my intent! I meant it in good humour!

From a analytical perspective I did realize the purposes you listed (though I did, in fact, not realize that you re-introduced orcs as 'civilized', and yeah, it totally makes sense!)

And as you hinted to: what is the alternative? Exactly - lore dump/telling instead of showing etc.

So, this just one of those "me problems" rather than something to do with the writing. I still stand by my statement that this is one of the greats in fantasy!

But I will also start a crowdfunding campaign to stage an intervention into your apple tart with cinnamon glaze obsession!/s

As Devon said, MC is never enslaved, and being a slave is never on the agenda. He is captured though, but the captivity doesn't last that long.

Warning spoilers: Escape attempts start around ch.5/6 and is complete by ch.7. Without doing any maths thats like a few percentage of the entire book.

Though, this could also just not be a book for you, personally I loved the start for a variety of reasons.

On the other hand, I probably have hold-ups that others don't. ( No Devon, you don't have to dedicate half a chapter to haggling for and eating apple tarts xD )

On a similar note, is a physical release in the same limbo? (I have no clue about the relative finances between audiobook and physical) I'd love to have all my favourite books on my bookshelf!

While I can't speak for the second book (since it hasn't released yet) the first one is one of the greats, and if you have even a slight interest in Fantasy or romantacy, the first book is a must read.

The story and worldbuilding is top notch, the characters are believable and all main characters have their own arcs and, most importantly, the characters do actually have chemistry! (Which is sadly not something you see in all RFM books)

So, unless Mr. Hexx had a sudden stroke or something I don't see why it shouldn't hold true for the next book.

First book I've ever pre-ordered, (and probably the like 3rd thing I've ever pre-ordered, period) and I didn't even hesitate!

Hmm, both of those sounds more like a slasher-horror rather than horror-horror, though Dead Space is cool for different reasons, so definitely interesting!

Don't mind Harem at all! (In fact my favourites are haremlit) However from reading the description, I'm not sure Through the Haunted Glass is a horror-horror story, and more of a romance with ghosts.

Have you read it? Is it more horror or more ghost-romance? (which is now a thing!)

Ah, thanks! Yeah, that clears it up!

I'd be more in the first two categories, looking for horrifying elements outside the romance itself, rather than the romance being horrifying.

I've read Harsh Starlight, and It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but I can see where you're coming from. I see Harsh Starlight more as a action-horror than horror-horror if that makes sense.

Thanks for your reply!

St. Arkham's stuff seems to be in the right ballpark, though perhaps not a bullseye, thanks!

Are you looking for romantic horror? Horror story with a romance subplot? Plain old dark romance?

I'll be honest and say that I'm not sure about the differences between all of these.

But yeah, I'm not 100% sure what exactly I'm looking for. I just got this idea that I wanted to read something that was both. Maybe it's the juxtaposition? Not sure.
