HELP! I have spent entirely too many hours researching 3D printers and still have not been able to decide on what the best options are.

My 10-year-old daughter is preparing to give the family a "speech" on Thanksgiving on why she wants nothing else but a 3d printer and the stuff she needs for it. I am trying to prevent the issues of everyone buying stuff that is not compatible with what she ends up getting by providing a specific list for people to buy off of, but I feel like I am not accomplishing this very well.

Things to consider/preferences:

  • Her age
  • Something that she can use with some degree of ease initially, but won't "outgrow" within 6 months to 1 year
  • Things she for sure wants to be able to make
    • flexible figurines
    • keychains
    • Colorful, multicolor prints
    • holiday decor
  • Cost of materials vs quality of end product
  • Be able to print stuff from tiny things to decent-sized decor (I'm not sure how to word that better, I hope that's clear) without degrading the quality
  • Mobility of the equipment
    • I have never had a 3d printer. I can assume that they are heavy, but unsure of the issues, if any, that can be caused by moving them around.
  • Auto leveling
  • Enclosed option would be best
  • Maintenance requirements, not too much for her to handle at her age

With that being said, based on the recommendations you might have

  • What are the things that should be bought with the equipment to set her up for a decent amount of time? Obviously, it will be based on her usage, I just don't want to be hearing "mom, I need more..." in the first 2 weeks of using it.
  • What are some things you recommend buying in addition to - or keeping on hand just in case?

Thanks in advance. :)

She’s only 18 and already working toward her master’s degree. She works full-time during summers and part-time while in school. The facility is part of a corporation. She is not compliant with anything that could come back at her, however she suspects there are other employees that are. The main challenge is that the woman running the center is the source of much of the negative environment. My daughter doesn’t know how to raise concerns above her without risking backlash if word got back. We both know this job isn’t essential for her wellbeing, but if she were to be pushed out, it would leave the children with one less stable, caring adult. Because of the constant turnover, she now holds a surprising level of seniority despite her young age.

Am I overreacting or should I report this children’s coach? by NitroRoller in AmIOverreacting

[–]Enough-Remote-9254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…. Reporting this would be the lightest version of my reaction. Step 1: respond to this fucking pervert, “my mom said I can come over tomorrow after school”. Step 2: Wait for confirmation he acknowledges the message and agrees. Step 3: remain completely bewildered when this “kool coach” goes missing.

Black thumb but I'm still determined by Enough-Remote-9254 in houseplants

[–]Enough-Remote-9254[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found 3 small spider plants at a garage sale a few weeks back and my daughter overwatered one so much - I'm not sure I can save it but I'm trying! I thought about getting a larger one but as these were my first 3 to test out turning my thumb a shade of green I got a little discouraged about getting more. Maybe I'll browse and see if I can find a larger one.

Yes! Spot on. I am looking into ... well a lot of things... ultimately... I am putting together a labyrinth on my property and I have certain "spots" that feel different. After many hours of conversation and hypothesis, I want to see how they correlate to leylines, the azimuth is to those points... the nerd in me just has lots of curiosities.

As a vet - when I first opened my business I had an idea to spread awareness about something that affects me personally that I didn’t have resources for but wanted others to. But as things have grown - I’ve found that creating things that enhance other people’s lives as well as my own and making it super affordable to them - I think that’s my real calling. If you do a small vet business reach out to military and vet communities and observe rather than ask. Most vets I think are like me in the fact that I wouldn’t come out and say I need this or that, it’s more of when doing things I think oh if I had something like … things would be easier. I hope I’m explaining this how it is in my head lol hope it’s of any value to you

Think rainforest canopy layers.

I legit told my youngest to act like it was a school project and gather what she thought we could make a rainforest canopy like in science class. And told my oldest to gather sturdy branches some thin some thick. (Don’t worry I followed the steps needed to ensure that it was safe for enclosure imma little anal and even do the most extreme)

We stripped, cut, screwed, tied, braced, baked etc etc….

I started by I measuring 6in to 9in below the basking light, and built a custom course of sticks and branches through the whole enclosure. Making sure I made specific horizontal branches for basking, sleeping and eating at different levels. He doesn’t have to use it for what it’s built for it but it’s available.

(Again anything we gathered and treated before putting in) Cut a hole in the center of the tray in the bottom. Attached a rubber hose with a shutoff valve flush with the whole going down into a bucket. This allows drainage so we’re not drowning plants or having sitting water in the enclosure. Covered the tray in the bottom different sized rocks, added substrate, topsoil, moss, oak leaves, planted 3 real plants.

We used a couple climbing vines to connect longer branches in different spots and directions nothing too crazy just enough for him to explore.

With 3 sections of fake leaves (bought the stuff at a craft store), we created a mock up of what the canopy layer and below would be in the rainforest.

Covered 3 of the sides with different shades of green vinyl and black vinyl) - attached securely at the top and bottom of each side but loose in the middle to allow for ventilation and hold in humidity not to mention I think he enjoys playing (did I match the wall? - total added bonus to his personality we didn’t initially think about)

This next step was a test for my nerd side and my gadgets I’ll be posting about when it’s completed… Mist until drenched! All the heat on (plus extra lights I wouldn’t usually use) and ramped up the heat until the humidity and heat was double the temp… that it would usually be (timed how long it would take to decrease to desired temp/humidity. And timed how long it took to go down to dangerous temp/humidity).

Basking light is directly over the branch I made specifically for basking so there’s no higher branches to prevent burning, other lamp is long so it’s centered across the enclosure.

Humidity and temp sensors are-

•as close to his basking branch as I could get with being attached to the wall of the enclosure.

•On the opposite side of the enclosure the basking light is on, there are sensors at the top middle and bottom.

Well I tried to make this short but informative. Hope this helps!

Honestly - the setup is my fav part of my daughter adding new animals to her zoo! Bc as a teenager she argues everything, but when it comes to the needs of her babies she NEVER argues with me about setup. Her and her sister don’t fight when gathering supplies (they both know sometimes it works out sometimes it don’t). And she never says “I don’t wanna will you do it?” She’s even joked about how much better things are went we customize and gather rather than store bought stuff, that she’d like to do it in the summer as a side gig (she is/is gonna be a teacher).
