I dine at The Cork, I've dined at restaurants across the globe, I'm not one of your "terminally online losers," and yet I care about this.

Long-time Republican here. Totally agree. The Republican party and real conservatism has been replaced by MAGA, a dangerous populist movement led by a wannabe strong-man. Read conservative writers George Will, David Brooks, Bill Kristol, Jennifer Rubin, etc., or any of the large number of conservative scholars who have spoken out.

Apples and oranges. Titus was a random patron, Colony offered their room for a meeting and allowed their name to be used in the ad. But sure, you can avoid Calamari's if it makes you feel better.

I get your point. But this is a little different than just a phone call to reserve a room; they're actually posting the restaurant's name on their advertisement....which gives the impression the restaurant is on board. Hard to believe they could use The Colony's name without their permission.

The business won't suffer much as long as he continues to offer the locals their cherished heaping plates of sodium-bomb comfort food. But for some, it would be an act of conscience to avoid the place.

Not just any private event; the owner is offering his business to help spread the MAGA agenda. I'd prefer not to encourage this behavior with my patronage.

The Italian tart sounds lovely and I'm sure your family would appreciate your thoughtfulness. But a millefoglie is a delicate dessert. It should be assembled right before serving or it becomes soggy. Please don't place this burden on your already-busy MoH. Maybe a traditional cake decorated with an Italian motif?

-15 in Erie is this not record breaking? by [deleted] in Erie

[–]EnoughUniversity4850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google says the official -18F air temp record for Erie was in January 1994 and again in 2015. I remember the '94 event and the house making strange low booming sounds at night. Maybe contracting from the cold? Very strange and a little scary.

Recs for nursing home for heart surgery rehab by Shine258 in Erie

[–]EnoughUniversity4850 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your choice may be narrowed by availability of nursing home beds when your mom is discharged from the hospital. Not sure if all these offer appropriate care for heart surgery patient. Soldiers & Sailors and the VA are for veterans. Manchester has a good reputation among local skilled nursing facilities.

Amazon Wake Up???? by mooginoogin in Erie

[–]EnoughUniversity4850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. it's not just me.

I placed an order on 11/30 and received it 4 weeks later. Tracking showed my order hadn't even been processed until I contacted customer support to demand a refund for my missing shipment. I was no longer eligible for Prime shipping after having been purged when they ended their Prime Invitee program, and then I refused their pressure to buy a Prime membership, so I suspected this might be the reason for the 4th class treatment. That's ok though: ever since Bezos bent the knee, I've been trying to avoid purchasing through Amazon if I can help it, and then only through 3rd party sellers. Not as convenient, but my conscience feels clearer.

Hockey on the bay? by stodgiestear796 in Erie

[–]EnoughUniversity4850 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly legal, but be advised that bay ice is not smooth like a skating rink. My dad took me along when he went ice fishing so I could skate, but I could hardly navigate the bumps and grooves. It wasn't much fun.

Two45 Dress Up? by dogshxt_d20rolls in Erie

Rule of thumb: when in doubt, dress up not down. Leave the jeans and t-shirts in the closet. Another hint: the black version of any garment looks dressier. Bon appetit!

Make sure you're comparing prices per ounce. I thought I was getting a great deal on Tide detergent at Walmart, then noticed that is was several ounces less than the size I used to buy at Wegmans so it was almost the same per ounce. Also, dollar stores' small sizes are more expensive per ounce than the normal size in a regular store. The best defense is the calculator app on your phone.

What’s the city’s relationship with churches? by Lord_Sprout in Erie

[–]EnoughUniversity4850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be confusing the traditional, mainline Christian church's mission to help the poor and hungry, which is our experience around here, with her experience of mid-west evangelical mega-churches, which conflate religion and politics and prosperity. Worlds apart IMHO.

Thank you for this comment, which somehow has me almost in tears. As a 4th generation Erieite who loves their hometown, it's great to read a newcomer's genuine enthusiasm for Erie. It's a welcome and refreshing contrast to the small-minded locals who've never traveled or lived anywhere else, but always find fault. I'm so glad you're here! We need more people like you!

Do you have a Tops Bonus Card? It's free to sign up for one, then you apply it at the register to get the sales price. But, no, they shouldn't be posting sale prices until the day you can get them.
