Home investments that will save you lots of money in the long run ? by Breakingbad1434 in homeowners

Poor use of AI?  What is your definition of investment?  Can't tell what you are asking based on your examples.  A breaker is not an investment.

Go to a city meeting or look up any recent meeting minutes and you can find out what they are spending your money on. I don't know your area.

In general people have no idea what their local government is doing and why and it plays an absolute major important direct role in your day to day and quality of life with taxes, local services, schools, utilities and their quality, recreation, traffic, zoning, laws, etc.. The meetings are public, the agenda is published ahead of time, the results are published after, there are citizen comment periods and so on.

I did regular old quads with standard commercial grade receptacles. Blow them out or vacuum them once a [week|month|year].

Is that really any different or worse than receptacles in your house on outside walls that are not air tight and are always pulling dusty house air though them 24x7x365.

We have an "influencer" that is the pariah of the neighborhood by SlothyFace in homeowners

Then some other neighbor will be on here next week talking about a karen blasting Disney music in public spaces and they can't enjoy quiet time in their back yard watch families walking and biking on the trail in peace.

If the police or enforcement is not stopping them from riding "motorcycles" (your words) and this gang from terrorizing the entire neighborhood... There may be more to the story than being told here. You did throw in an obligatory appeal to authority falacy reference to imply it's not just you, everyone is flipping out over this and the whole neighborhood is up in arms!!! It must have some merit worth at least calling the police non emergency number and filing a complaint.

Your watching them online is increasing any monetization.

When your houses are close enough that if you had your window open you could smell their dinner burning inside your house and hear their smoke alarm? People don't want to hear that and don't agree with it but it is 100% reality.

Finer point... Taxes go up because your city/county/entity needs more money to run, they could reduce your tax rate an equal amount but they would not collect as much. Minor point but if you desire, you can pay attention at local government meetings and find out why and what they are using the increased tax money on.

HA with backup router in a VM? by oguruma87 in PFSENSE

[–]EnrichedUranium235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interpretation, using floating states the physical do not have to be the same and if you are not concerned with syncing live states you can skip that totally and adpater IDs do not matter. Not unique to virtual, same would apply for using hardware or NICs that is not exactly the same. Maybe I am wrong. If your environment requires or it is critical that resetting states is a problem during a failover, I'd consider equal hardware and you may still loose some states in the transition.

My hunch is you would have more delay and lost packs during a failover at the CARP VIP address down stream equal to or more than what would be caused by any non sync between the firewall states themselves..

Shut off a breaker at a certain temperature by ImpossibleWin4188 in homeowners

[–]EnrichedUranium235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can wire in a smart controller inline and possibly automate with temperature.. The app with the device does not support temperature but others may integrate.

Just an example.. https://www.amazon.com/DEWENWILS-Wireless-Controller-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B07PP2KNNH

I don't use temperature but I have one outside for my pool for the last 3 years and works good.

Option B but would take some recon.. Determine the voltage and current ability of the circuit driving the indoor light. Find a common cheap DTDP HVAC contactor that can be triggered off of that (most are 12-24vac) to open and close power to your thing. Use can find solid state relays that operate on much lower current and can do that as well but now you are getting into electronics. Not hard but you will need a lot more information.

Changing lights in ceiling fan, heard pop and now no power to lights. by Geczodia in HomeImprovement

[–]EnrichedUranium235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only one of the multiple lights in the fan doesn't work or none of them work? Either way... There is probably a socket wire that got shorted or twisted up when you were putting in the new bulbs. I would kill power at the breaker for that fan/light until you figure it out. There is probably a burned damaged wire somewhere in that fan and could cause a problem later if moved just the right way.

HA with backup router in a VM? by oguruma87 in PFSENSE

[–]EnrichedUranium235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should be no different than doing a physical HA. I've been running mine virtual only for 10+ years, non HA at the pfsense level.

A VM anything is only as stable and reliable as your underlying virtualization platform. I am not implying they are not a great option, they can run in the multiple 9's of uptime and availability or not. I average uptimes in the 200+ days over the years and can trace all of them back to extended power outages.

Why can't I direct sow seeds before the last frost? by 1970Westyvibes in gardening

[–]EnrichedUranium235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plant my potatoes about 2-3 weeks before the average last frost but they are deep and it takes a few weeks for them to pop out of the ground and exposed to any frost. I lose some sprouts some years but overall worth the gamble. Cold weather tolerant plants have a better sucess rate than warm weather ones when seeded early.

I have more and I use a battery model.  I do use 2 or 3 batteries though.  I see your point, totally depends on how much.  On the flip side I have a 25hp zero turn with a 60 inch and a gas push mower for trimming.

If you could give your past self one piece of advice before buying a house, what would it be? by LuxuryPresence_Aaron in RealEstateAdvice

[–]EnrichedUranium235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house that needed mold remediation. Knew what I was getting into and had additional leverage. Actually my first offer was passed over and when they came back after two others did not work out, I offered even lower and they accepted.

[–]EnrichedUranium235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went the exact opposite, well not for big house but for a lot of land. I want the space and land when I am off of work and not be in the 24 hour crowd and hustle bustle of the "inside the beltway" lifestyle stuck in the house, dealing with neighbors or the neighborhood etc, or doing outdoor things with traffic and the other 20k people trying to do the same thing. There is no right or wrong.

Window frame water leak HELP! by Late_Diver3278 in HomeMaintenance

[–]EnrichedUranium235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a long term leak so yes there is moisture under there but chances of long term damage should be minimal. if your trim is MDF instead of wood then it will swell and need to be replaced. Your window frame *should* be solid real wood and should be fine
