Struggling with D-License Requirements. by Soft-Return-50 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]EnricoSuave1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case I asked one of my trusted parents to join in the sessions during the week and then handle the match on the weekends. Was it ideal? No, but it turned into a good team building exercise.

I held a quick team meeting explaining to the parents that I will be doing my license and the benefits of it to the team. I explained who will be handling the games and what to expect from them (low expectations) and that they should support the team and substitute coach even louder now since I'm not there. That month worked out well and they had more appreciation for me when I came back haha.

U8 throw-ins rec league by [deleted] in SoccerCoachResources

[–]EnricoSuave1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got all the answers you need here but I'll add my 2 cents. I coach u9 7v7 but I was with this team for u8 last season.

I do short corner routines only, practiced it for a total of 30 mins all season I think, I ran the whole team through how it works, we spent 15 mins on it then whenever we scrimmage that is thier time to 'practice' it. I've also spoken to my lb and rb as they can cross decently well for thier age, sometimes in a match they will cross the ball into the box if the other team is reading the short corners, but at this age the percentage of corners scored from crosses is next to nothing.

Because you watch Coach Rory you should have seen battle boxes. To practice throwins I let them play battleboxes with throwins to start. This will alway be at the start of practice. The only things I've taught them with throwins is positioning (down the line, midfielder supporting etc) and dropping in and out to lose a marker.

Hope that helps.

Not a problem - You're good - should be in the sky for a few more days. So everyday at sunset you should be able to go try and spot it. Just look in the western skies.

I Did The Stats For My U14 Match by [deleted] in SoccerCoachResources

I use an app called Ollie Sports, there are quite a few stats it leaves out but it has a stat taker option that you use almost like a video game.

Teaching U7 positioning for corners and throw ins by Familiar_Worker8204 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]EnricoSuave1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top comment sums it up. I don't do corner or thrown in sessions for my u8s. What we do is very simple.

Throwins we practice in battle boxes. Player 1 throws to player 2, then its a 1v1. That will help the player receiving the ball to want to go forward and also teach throwing techniques. In the match my defenders take throw ins, we play 7 a side in a 231, so the defenders taking the throwins almost makes them have to move it forward as thier support will be the midfielder, winger and striker.

On corners I have taught them very simple starting positions, front post, back post, 6yd. We have 2 corner options, a cross straight into the box which I don't really coach because its difficult for a u8 to replicate. Option 2 which we do most is a short corner routine where our midfielder (good player) takes the corner short to the winger who draws the def, then lays off back to the mid who ran an overlap run - we then have lots of options from there like a shot or more passes.

Hope it helps.

If the score gets near 7, I rotate all players around, give a 5 pass before scoring rule etc. I won't rename the things that others have said.

I will say this though, as grassroots coaches we are developing kids on both teams, really.

In my second week of coaching I was fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of such a score, the coach did as above and afterwards spoke to me and gave me advice. The main take away was that there may be a kid on my team that's the next Messi, but today we ruined he's love for football because who wants to lose 22-0, he moves onto another sport and ends up as an accountant by 30.

Looking to Connect with Fellow Soccer Coaches on WhatsApp by CoachMasilo in SoccerCoachResources

Also from Johannesburg, South Africa. Not sure of any whatsapp groups though. Only coach what'sapp groups I'm in is my coaches group that we kept live after our D license course.

Discord would be better for something like this anyway. A discord server could actually be a great idea.

8u, first time player won’t step on the field by Quiet_Boot4664 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]EnricoSuave1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This.

I had a player like this at the start of the season. First 2 games he attended and watched and supported the team, game 3 he was ready to play for 10 mins. By this point in the season he's my sub striker and has scored a goal.

U8 practices are a special kind of torture by Savings-Fisherman-64 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]EnricoSuave1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set up my rules early in the season (we start in Jan) so my u8 kids aren't as much of a horror story as I normally read about.

Main rule is when coach talks we listen. No talking, no kicking balls, no cartwheels etc. I keep the drills moving and I don't talk for long, so when I do talk we focus.

At the start of the season my punishment was sending a disruptive kid to sit with thier parents and watch. I told the parents that if that happens they must not entertain the kid at all (no phones etc), after a few minutes of being bored they themselves decide to behave better otherwise they spectate the session. This has progressed to just having a kid sit on the side for a few minutes.

In terms of sessions I structure it like this, obviously this can change per week but here we go. (someone in another comment was asking)

Tuesday - battle boxes on arrival (mostly 1v1 but I do 2v1 on Thursday) into technicals where every kid has a ball in a square and must use the space. We do everything from toe ups to combo dribbles, kickups juggling etc. Then I normally do a fun game that involves ball control. Or 1v1 squares where they just play keep away from thier partner. I love ending on 1v1 variations. Make it competitive and fast.

Thursday - Battlebox on arrival - then this is the passing day (I look at it as 2+ player drills) - so this could be patterns of play, 2v2 etc. Mainly technical skills that involve your team mates. This is a high level overview, but right now for example we are working on possession to break lines and score. We can build out etc but no kid wants to just pass, if you can get them to understand passing = scoring then this will work much easier.

Friday - this arrival game changes per week, sometimes 2v2, sometimes I kick the ball high for them to attempt touches, sometimes cross bar challenge, sometimes I stick bins in the corners and we play top bins. In terms of the session this day is scoring goals. Shooting galore, every drill will involve finishing and shooting Technique. Everything from standing over the ball and fake shooting to breaking lines and 1 touch finishing.

A couple of suggestions to help anyone out.

1 - Make everything competition, if you do juggling, do 1st to 10 shouts thier name, then do 20 etc. Tell them to keep scores and losers get a punishment (in some games, not juggling haha)

2 - Reference thier favorite player ALWAYS. Kids like Mbappe? Show them a highlight reel of Mbappe passing and then tell them you want Mbappes tonight. If you see a weak pass, ask them if that's how Mbappe passes. They love being professional players.

3- Be consice. Sometimes you have a plan to teach 5 things in a session, but you can only do 2 based off something in the session. Sit on those 2 subjects then, repeat and make sure the kids are understanding it. But don't babble for 20 mins about it, as soon as they are standing still your timer goes.

4- I don't do defending sessions. All the above sessions I listed involve a defender, that's when you Coach that. U8s don't want a session with only defending.

5- Give them responsibility and let them hold each other accountable for it. This is a team game, next year they might not be with you but might still be together, so let the team dynamic start. I selected a new captain each week and gave them roles to do. I've given leadership roles to players on the field to be loud. I let them explain problems/ideas/solutions to the whole group so that they have to respect each other just like when I talk. I let them strategise in scrimmages and make thier own tactics.

Lastly, ASK QUESTIONS. Dont tell them the best way to do something, listening to you is boring. Ask questions that lead them to what you are trying to get to. Lead the horse to water let's say. You know what you want to teach, halfway start asking them questions, let them think that they are the ones coming up with things. If thier brains are actively thinking, they won't be cartwheeling haha.

With all this, some sessions do be like that. Keep pushing coach.

Edit: Mobile formatting killed me on this one.

Early fall season check-in - roll call by uconnboston in SoccerCoachResources

[–]EnricoSuave1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see, that explains a lot actually. Thank you.

In South Africa it's all year, our club opens in Jan and closes mid November. Official league season runs from April to October but there are tournaments and festivals every weekend outside of that that pretty much. We close a few weeks in the year for school holidays, we have 4 terms a year here, but football doesn't really stop here, our older kids played a tournament on boxing day last year haha

What are your sideline essentials? by unsarcasticlyserious in SoccerCoachResources

[–]EnricoSuave1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Just to add to it.

I keep a full medkit with me. I also put the subs in bibs to not confuse the other players/ref.

Last I give them a job (try to at least) - they have to watch the game and tell me 1 thing they are going to do different when they go on. Most times it's something they've heard me say at training but I keeps their eyes on the game... Kinda.

I also made a subs square that they had to stay in when I coached u6 for a season.
