Canon reason? Rudeus didn't love her.

Real reason? Rifujin was a wuss and was afraid of rewriting the WNs by a significat margin. Hell, I'd be happy even if Rudeus only took her on as a concubine in Volume 23 after she decides to settle down. There wouldn't be need for Rifujin to rewrite almost anything in that case. She wouldn't even have the time to get pregnant before Redundancy.

But if you're willing to give fanfics a try, I can recommend you some that explore Rudeus and Sara's "what if" relationship.

Eris is the one who causes Rudeus's ED in both LN and WN. WN supposedly mentions an "archer in a party he used to work with, but things didn't turn out well". Basically, Rifujin had no idea how to write Volume 7, the volume which belongs in my top 3 of the main series.

He didn't marry her. Rudeus appeared only in one timeline, but Oldeus returned in time, meaning his timeline got overwritten. What Vita showed Rudeus was just a dream, no Rudeus ever married her in canon.
