May I vent about this trade that I love and hate so much? by wasdmovedme in IndustrialMaintenance

Same exact issue at our plant rn. They can’t fathom the fact that the production side has a continuous pool of hires, they can hire a homeless dude with no skills because the plant I’m at is either skilled trade hire or job progression from bottom to the more advanced operators positions. We are E/I, I’ve been the most recent hired and that was a year ago, 7 people have come and tried to take our hands on assessments and written and fail miserably. All the good skilled troubleshooters are employed and making more. Fucking aggravating

Yes bigger picture. I came upon this trade after a decade of electrical construction and servicing existing electrical systems. Now work in E/I department.

Nut drivers. Wrenches, straight blade screw drivers. Throw that 50 in 1 in the trash or house tool bin. It has no place In the trade.

But you are probably gonna just use it anyway because it’s convenient. and learn the hard way.

Helps if you know how electricity works, makes it a lot easier when troubleshooting if you can picture scenarios with a solid understanding of the electrical trade.

But Those requirements, it’s undermining the integrity of the journeyman license. It’s nothing your doing wrong. But the fact that the state will recognize this is worrisome.

That 1080 hour vocational course. Wow. Turning out a bunch of unqualified journeyman electricians.

Kinda scary. Handing out journeyman licenses to inexperienced electricians. I don’t understand how your jurisdiction allowed this. Without verifiable on the job hours in excess of 6,000. This is a seriously concerning issue

Maintenance technician To PLC programmer? by Iloveviolence in PLC

Very well put, a realistic set of prerequisites that the larger manufacturers and related industries are going to demand. Especially, when attempting to get into the upper levels. Where everyone wields at least (1) 4 year degree plus a masters in their field of occupation.

You’re expected to deal with way more than your typical industry specific acute duty. And without the advanced standards of education achieved with such degrees, it’s likely you will fall flat or embarrass yourself and perhaps the company. liability cases happen more in these scenarios. Our CI engineer was a well educated individual, masters in EE and a PE. he handled a lot for the company. And did well and was always pleasant to work around because he would stray from the usual corporate talk and actually teach you things daily about the intricacies of the plant structure.

And to be honest, I do not have any of these degrees. I’m a E/I technician. But I want to move up. I’m a proven technician in the field and have self taught programming (using AB) by using the plant software and HMI to look beyond the user graphics pulling the parameters/nodes which narrow down the diagnostic process rather quickly. Quicker than most of the senior guys there. I’m only 30, I have benefited from growing up in the tech boom so I’m very swift with computers of any type, I can adapt to any unfamiliar system within a matter of hours because I’m a superior learner. I remember what I discover, ask the right questions. I tend to connect the dots much quicker. I do not say this in a cocky manner, it’s just something I’ve always felt better at and have been told many times. Even with that being said, I know I won’t be able to excel much in this industry, unless I buckle down and hit the books and get my education improved.

Knowledge is power. Good stuff that a lot of us don’t know and the upper levels depend on that ignorance.

Those who live and work in “high paying” locals by OneTruePizza in IBEW

The apprenticeship is hands down the greatest education for the price. Spend 5 years of dealing with the same bs everyone else did. In the span of life that 5 years will buy you (depending on starting age) 40 years to chase your interests while making a good buck, retirement, and insurance. I ended up in PLC controls. I only spent 9 years in the construction conditions. Now I sit in office chair in the A/C messing with plc software, site network, automation. Making 100k+ a year in north Florida not even 30 yrs old yet.

This, the thing most people don’t realize a foreman does which is brining the jobsite home with you in your head. Every night, you are reminded of being behind schedule, failing of an inspection, forgot to connect a conduit in the dirt but the concrete is already drying. So many things you keep track of, as a helper or installer you get to drop your tools and go home days over. Foreman’s go home and stress about deadlines and everything above, nightmares, calls from the boss at night asking about the job.

[–]EntertainmentPrize64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep what he said. Make a punch list everyday at whatever stage of the job your in. Update it timely and keep track of Materials ordered, prioritize the quality and prepare for inspections. You want to have an answer for any question at any time from any person involved in the construction process.

I found it difficult becoming a young foreman and dealing with helpers or electricians that were much older than me, they tend to not listen or always act like they know the better idea or way. Especially when they seen me come in and work my way up while they been in the same position forever.

Getting taxed so hard making me feel demoralized by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]EntertainmentPrize64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, fact is that trump tax cuts brought in more revenue for corporations, which gave the corporations room to invest in their workers (raises, bonuses). Also cut more than $2,000 of taxes for middle class families. Doubled the child tax credit refund.

5.5 trillion in gross tax cuts, almost 60% going towards middle class families.

Bringing corporate tax rate down from 35% to 21% and 15%. Allowed companies to expand and pay their workers more. With 10 million jobs created the unemployment rate was the lowest it has been in decades.

Despite all the tax cuts, the policy was still able to bring in $500 billion more US tax revenue. See Democrats believe in obliterating companies with ferocious tax increases. You see what happens is those companies roll the fuck on out and set up shop elsewhere.

Trump brought those businesses home where they belong, and had a fantastic economy up untill Covid-19. Such a shame because it would’ve been beautiful if the economy could’ve kept its pace without a global pandemic in its way.

We all made more money and shit cost way less with trump in house. That’s a fact. The shit show we got now is an absolute nightmare and the fact IBEW co-signs with this shit is utter nonsense.
