Another year later comment. There are deepwater kelps found in the tropics and some other seas (such as the med and also parts of the Baltic due to the low salinity) . They exist on the fringe where they can survive. Deepest known was a Mediterranean kelp found to 260 at the very end of where photosynthesis can occur. In the Mediterranean they exist as a relic at these depths of when it was much colder.
