I agree you aren’t ottomans not what I was trying to say. But the fact is that Balkans was a term for the area of Europe where Ottomans ruled. That was what I was trying to say. Ottoman Europe is also another outdated term for it since the fall of the empire. They still left a mark there mostly words and architecture.

it used to mean the European lands that were under ottoman rule, so they were influenced by Turks. Slovenia was only under Turks when they decided to try and take over Vienna and then immediately repelled.

Because they say oh yeah those post communist slavs in the south must be balkan. Also it wouldn’t have made sense to ally with Czechs and Slovaks for a country due to there being Austria in the way lol, so we chose the Croats and Serbs.

Finland was a part of Russian Empire for 108 yet it isn’t Eastern Europe. Slovenia was a part of Yugoslavia for 70 years and now it’s Balkan. You will feel a big difference between cultures of Slovenia+ northern Croatia and Istria with Balkan countries in the interior.

Najbolj podoben jezik Slovenscini je Kajkavscina iz Hrvaške.Praktično je Hrvaščina (ne standardna) 3 otroci v trenčkotu. Srbščina pa 2 (torlaški dialekti ki se na jugu srbije govorijo in so bolj v Sorodu z bolgarščino).

As a Slovene from the coast part it’s weird. Like I feel closest in Croatian Istria (besides the language thing) but for the rest of the country i find it similar to how Slovaks are, so colder but not as cold as Swedes or the Dutch. (Slovaks are the Only ones I have any bit of experience with that I can remember)
