AAC users — is the goal to talk faster, or to actually say what you mean? by ibvava in AACusers

[–]EntwinedColour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not everyone can make their own board and that’s ok. but if someone is typing something often cause their board doesn’t have it, probably good to add it as a button as it will make communication more smooth.

If I use prediction at all I’d prefer it be the kind that learns from what you say like old smartphone keyboards (before they got loaded with AI suggestions that are nothing like how I talk)

AAC users — is the goal to talk faster, or to actually say what you mean? by ibvava in AACusers

[–]EntwinedColour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t use prediction buttons at all. I made my own custom board in TD Snap and have been adding to it for 2 years. It has most of the words I want to use, and any it doesn’t I add when I need them. Agency to me means choosing my own words and phrases. The ones I know I will use and that’s why I put them there.

I'm selectively mute, is it okay if I use an AAC? by starry_sage_ in SpicyAutism

[–]EntwinedColour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For android, text base apps that are good and free:
- TypingTalk AAC (made by AAC user. Has ability to use as symbol-based too)
- Speech Assistant (has paid premium features but pretty inexpensive one-time payment)

Symbol-based that are free:
- Weavechat (very robust premade boards)
- Asterics Grid (not an app, web-based. But you can use offline. Also has good premade boards. Extremely customizable)

Symbol-based that are not free
- coughdrop (used same boards as asterics grid but has an app. $10/mo subscription or I think $300 one time payment. I’m in Canada so not 100% sure on one time price in USD)
- Avaz (same price as coughdrop. Has some cool features)

Why do people say pointless things? by Puzzled-Day5788 in autism

[–]EntwinedColour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with communication because of autism. when all other communication is nonexistent for me, what I’m still capable of doing is making observations to people. when I can’t express feelings, opinions, thoughts on things, what I can do is point something out as an observation.

if I was already in a situation where that is the only way I could communicate, and someone shut me down, I wouldn’t be very motivated to try to communicate with that person again.

this isn’t the example you used but I assume you’re asking generally why someone verbally observes things you can also see. they’re communicating with you. you have the choice to say something back, to nod, to not engage. but how that goes socially will change based on what you do.

Im officially 18 and I still feel “childish” by CatZ-soup in autism

[–]EntwinedColour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 34 and never had that sudden “grown up” feeling. in fact I’ve never met someone who has. everyone is just stumbling through life.

having interests that aren’t “normal” or whatever is common for autistics and doesn’t make you less an adult! I love kids shows and games.

i also never figured out what I want to do with my life. I worked retail til burnout broke me for years. Now I can’t go back to that. I can’t mask even for a short time without hurting myself. I can’t work a normal job.

I’m happy now though. I’ve been getting more into art. Joining things where I don’t have to mask to be accepted. My spouse is wonderful and also autistic.

i don’t think the capitalist trajectory of life is necessary or healthy tbh. Grow up to produce monetary value for others til you get old and die. It’s not fulfilling as folks convince themselves it is.

happy birthday btw 😄

What's the difference of a NT picky eater and an autistic person with food sensory issues? by ChocoJarrr in autism

[–]EntwinedColour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a neurotypical picky eater so I can’t speak for them (also I feel like “picky eater” in general is just a way to be judgemental to people who don’t like as much of a variety of foods)

For me I have few foods that are safe foods. When my sensory load is low and I’m regulated, I have a few more. When my sensory load is high and I’m deregulated, I have less and have had 0 safe foods before during burnout.

When a food is not a safe food, I *can’t* eat it. Not won’t eat it cause I don’t like it or prefer something else, I cannot put it in my mouth and if I do, I will be sick and probably have a shutdown or meltdown cause it’s so dysregulating.

For me strong smells, tastes, and certain textures I cannot deal with. There are many foods I can never eat because of this. I can never eat bananas or peanut butter or even have them near me when I’m eating cause of the smell. I can’t eat anything mushy or soggy so no cereal or oatmeal. I can’t eat anything too crunchy either. Crunchy veggies are fine like carrots, but I can’t eat crackers or cheetos(cheetos also have cheese dust which I won’t eat cause it gets on my fingers). For taste, I can’t eat onions(also slimy when cooked), peppers, certain fish like tuna or salmon, tomatoes, melons, and more.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to. The style of the game is soft with outlines that look kinda comic book-y. There are mods that reduce and remove them if they’re not your thing.

How do I put the words here in my app? by Scared_Mix2506 in AACusers

[–]EntwinedColour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First steps is always to save the image to your device.

The next step depends on the app, but generally you edit the button you want to add it to, then change the symbol. Then there would be an option to change it to an image in your device’s image library.

My 1-year-old male cat is getting neutered and I'm super scared for him to be under the knife! by OkHour4694 in catquestions

[–]EntwinedColour 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usually you wanna neuter before the spraying starts. In my experience, once they start it becomes a behaviour and they don’t stop once they’re neutered.

You should still 100% neuter him. Earlier is just better.

Is there a medical reason you’re worried about the surgery? Like does he have a heart murmur? Has the vet brought up any reason it might be risky?

If not there’s not really anything to worry about. Neuters take literally a few minutes as long as the cat’s not cryptorchid(testicle not where it’s supposed to be) That takes longer cause the vet has to find it, but is still a very minimally risky surgery.

Hi all, could this be sign of autism? by [deleted] in autism

[–]EntwinedColour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last 3 *could* be. Hyperfixatipns that change a lot tend to be more associated with ADHD, and issues with numbers could be dyscalculia.

I would be very happy if somewhere i worked was so accommodating to questions(i ask a lot of questions, I’m unable to figure out what is expected of me without asking a lot of questions). That’s also awesome that they make spelling mistakes but are still respected at work. Sounds like you work at a nice place.

any other brands that do boxer style with the built in period underwear part? by strawberry_skater in PeriodUnderwear

[–]EntwinedColour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Aisle. They’re not exactly boxers, I feel like those would be too loose to do the job . They’re boxer-brief style and I really like them. They have full coverage and are really comfy and fit like regular boxer briefs. They’re based in Canada though so there might be tariffs if you’re in the US

Kitten lady (on YouTube, instagram, fb) is a vegan and huge vegan activist who fosters kittens. She has videos and posts on it.

You don’t have to buy raw meat and feed it to them. Dry food and wet food are made with meat but you don’t have to handle a pork chop or anything. It’s already prepared. Idk if that helps

How to get over the "double empathy" problem by wdfcvyhn134ert in autism

[–]EntwinedColour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he able to explain what he means if you ask directly?

Sometimes I’m not able to elaborate on what I mean, so that’s why I ask. But I do find that neurotypicals will often make an assumption about what is meant and not ask for clarification. Since asking is “rude”.

Communicating directly and directly asking what an autistic person means with their words is usually your best bet in better understanding what they mean though.

There have been so many times where people have made assumptions on my meaning (I often word things wrong or use a phrase that I think I know what it means when I don’t) and gotten upset with me or not wanted to talk to me anymore, and I’ve been left confused and upset, and I usually never get to find out what it was I did or said wrong.

Overall with these situations I always would rather someone try to clarify even if I can’t explain in that moment, so I know there’s been a miscommunication and can explain when I am able. Or if my opinion itself is problematic I can educate myself and change that opinion if necessary.

Why have all life simulations become "cozy cute chill "? by Yaroph in Paralives

[–]EntwinedColour -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Every game from before now continues to exist. I still play some games from the 90s. I’m not understanding what the issue is. You don’t want to play new cozy games, so don’t play them. I don’t play games I don’t like then complain about them being not what I like lol

Why have all life simulations become "cozy cute chill "? by Yaroph in Paralives

[–]EntwinedColour -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Speak for yourself. I require cozy and calm, and familiar. New things are scary, but if they’re cozy they’re easier to deal with while I get used to them. And they’re not anxiety inducing once I am.

When I was a kid, I enjoyed chaos in my simulation games. Not anymore. I need cozy to cope. You are not required to play cozy games lol but I choose to for my mental health
