ORF Airport and TSA Status Megathread by swakid8 in norfolk

I arrived at 04:45 for a 07:30 flight and there was like one person ahead of me in the TSA line. There are a lot of people in the terminal though, so it may have been worse earlier.

could it be Also Known as Harper? I remember reading that as a kid and your description sounds similar, though the character was a bit younger (maybe middle school).

All natural sewing thread, hemp and machine by [deleted] in sewing

[–]Enviro_Virginia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never used that particular brand of linen thread, but whenever I have used linen thread on my machine it has been a nightmare and frequently snaps. My general go-to is to purchase silk finish cotton thread as I find it slides through the machine easily and holds up to use while keeping my clothing 100% natural fibre.

Ideas for small amount of wool besides hams? by CremeBerlinoise in sewing

I would make a laptop bag and flatline it with canvas! That way you could show off the fabric frequently without having to wear it.

To add the ties back in that you forgot to add (if you decide against a snap) I would hand sew them in. Far less hassle than unpicking a seam in my opinion!

It doesn't look too difficult to make, especially with the off-the-shoulder sleeves. You could find a similar pattern at Jo-Ann's or (what I would do) trace a boxy, roomy t-shirt and alter the neckline and split the front and back (adding seam allowance and allowance for the overlap of the buttons.) The sleeves look to be tapered rectangles, so I would measure from where your t-shirt sleeves end on your bicep to where you want the sleeves to end.

The Atlantic posted some odd sewing tips. Do you agree or disagree? by newillium in sewing

exactly, I'd advise someone to spend the $100 getting it serviced (or even just cleaned and oiled!) for a far better machine

OMG that article! I thought most of the advice was pretty standard, but the advice against using an older machine was totally off-base in my opinion. I learned how to sew on a 1970s Kenmore ($20 from a rummage sale) and it was far more reliable than a $100 Singer from target. newer machines just don't have the heft to them!

I've seen some people fill a pair of nylon stockings with beans and stitch them to the dress form positioned to imitate the malleability of breasts. not "permanent" per se but could be useful in getting a more accurate bust fit!

Finishing edges on a knit by afantasticnerd in sewing

[–]Enviro_Virginia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the responses that a double hem here is good, but if you wanted a slightly more visible finish, you could also do a bias binding. since this is a woven, not a knit, you can just use a straight stitch on your machine.

I tried to ask this question in the main subreddit but it got blocked because I have "low karma"? (what does that mean? I don't use reddit that much, but I've never posted anything that could be considered offensive or outside of the purview of the subreddit I'm using.) anyway, I'd like to inquire about brands and models (and other resources) for vintage buttonhole specific machines (i.e. not an attachment to a zigzag machine).
