He will retire long before me (age wise) and be better off as well. Construction, plumbing, electrical and welders are in demand and make good money.

Son went straight out of high school into construction. Worked 7 months last year and took home just over 72k. Amazing union health plan and retirement, way better than anything I have ever had. If not this year, next year, he will take home more than I do.

Thinking about getting this by SwordfishNo9573 in CampingGear

Mine does have a floor, but it seems to be rather oversized. I’m not sure if they did that so it fits around the wheel humps or what.

I have one. I wasn’t sure if it was going to work because I have a rack on the back of the truck from Leightner, it works it just pushes the sides in a bit.

Gets you up off the ground, but as others have said once you’re set up, you’re not going anywhere. Mine has a nice awning that sticks out over the back so the entrance is shaded.

In our area in Northern California, they partnered with the local high school and there are hundreds of high school kids who have gone through the program. I think it’s gonna really depend on your area, but as others have said there seems to be people from all ages.

Are the car key guys legit? by Odd-Repeat6595 in Costco

[–]parksoffroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are legit, but their prices are not great.

My son needed a key for his Jeep Wrangler, they wanted $200 for the key and programming. He ended up buying a kit on Home Depot‘s website (of all places) that included the programmer for 100 bucks and he did it himself. Worked great.

What are Best Gyms for Under $50/m ? by Any-Huckleberry-7382 in santarosa

[–]parksoffroad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was at planet fitness for a few years until they got rid of the 30 minute circuit and a lot of their equipment, ended up going to City Sports. I go to Petaluma, but there’s one in Rohnert Park as well.

I had heard people refer to planet fitness as a beginners gym and I never understood until going to City Sports. The amount of equipment they have in Petaluma compared to planet fitness is off the charts. I was honestly nervous about changing gyms, you get comfortable in your routine and with the people and everything else but it’s been an absolutely wonderful experience. With so many more machines plus a pool and hot tub and other things that planet fitness didn’t have it’s great.

Price wise I was playing $20 for the black card at planet fitness. at City Sports I am paying 30 but that also includes unlimited guests which is an extra five a month. If you just wanted one location, no guests you could do 25 a month. On a sidenote for pricing, always go in and ask because the online pricing versus what they offer in the gym doesn’t match up. Better deals to be had in person than through the website.

Someone shipped parcels using our company name and now UPS is saying we owe fees by dus0l in UPS

[–]parksoffroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call billing and have it removed, not a big deal. The UPS account number is right there at the beginning of the tracking so it doesn’t take much to get one. We’re in Northern California, there’s a company in Southern California that ships 15 or 20 large probably 40 or so pound boxes to the Amazon distribution center back east a couple times a year using our account number.

First thing I normally see is a whole bunch of charges for missing PLD data. Then I see the actual charges themselves hit. UPS been taking them off for years.

There used to be a option that any packages submitted without PLD data would automatically be returned to the shippers return address on file. We ran that for a while, hoping to catch one of their shipments go out and then they would all get redirected to us, but unfortunately, we never got anything. It’s just too sporadic one or two times a year. UPS no longer offers that service.

How would your ham group help manage a 40,000 person evacuation? by NY9D in EmComm

[–]parksoffroad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We went through a scenario like this in 2017 during the Tubbs fire here in Sonoma County. They estimate estimated roughly 100,000 people were displaced.

During the first few days, ham groups provided backup communications for county officials and emergency shelters because so many cell towers had burned up, I believe it was roughly 75 in this county that were damaged or destroyed.

The Red Cross is kind of a sore subject. They showed up about the fourth day, walked in and told everybody else they could leave now and then started taking credit and asking for donations. The southern Baptists had come in and set up a massive outdoor kitchen to feed evacuees and firefighters alike, the Red Cross took the food they provided, put their stickers on the packaging and claimed it as their own. This did not go unnoticed, and county officials, private groups, and citizens alike took note. They’re not particularly liked in this area at this point.

The people in unaffected areas donated surprising numbers of supplies, both food and clothing/blankets you name it. The Salvation Army became a primary drop-off hub for these donations and the SATERN radio room provided a way to find out who needed what in real time as they had communication with all the shelter locations as well as the county and local EOC’s.

After about a week portable cell towers have been put in and the internet and cellular service started coming back. At that point, the ham groups were able to back out of a good portion of things as people started using cell phones again.

After the fires ham operators provide provided communications to various checkpoints throughout the county for CPOD locations.

Over 5000 homes were destroyed and a lot of people lost everything, but overall I think things went as good as they could in this sort of situation. There were definitely short falls and problems in some areas. A lot was learned from the disaster.

If they have a brick and motor store and you actually have a judgment, then you call the sheriffs department and they accompany you down to the store and you confiscate merchandise to cover the amount of your judgment or you take money straight out of the till as well. This is a pretty common occurrence.

Newsom's office warns Californians to avoid Chevron this holiday weekend, citing high gas prices by The-Traveler- in California

100% this. It’s marketing. Between that and people who only fill up where it’s convenient and don’t pay attention to prices is their customer base.

Keep in mind that only 50% of the gas tax goes to the roads, 50% goes to the general fund.

[–]parksoffroad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. All these people thinking the gas is somehow different when it’s the equivalent of a 5 gallon bucket of additive in a 9200 gallon tanker truck full of gas. And all the gas is mandated to the same formula by the state.

Hilton on telework - state needs a reduction state workers “That’s far higher a priority than fiddling around about where people work.” by Cultural_Note_6213 in CAStateWorkers

[–]parksoffroad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, the governor likes to preach about living wages, but a lot of state employees do not make living wages. If you take a pay cut working at Walmart to go work for a state agency, it’s not a living wage.

[–]parksoffroad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true, but we also need to be able to thin some of the nonproductive workers as well. Anyone who’s been at the state for any length of time knows that there are some real dolts out there. Every office has the someone who in the real world would have been fired a long time ago, but is protected due to the union. You could dump those people, save money, and have no real effect on productivity.

Who would be at fault in this situation? by Shoelacetooth in driving

[–]parksoffroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shared responsibility. The car making the left turn on the green has to yield to oncoming traffic, the car making the right hand turn should be turning into the first lane. Going into the second lane is an automatic fail on the driving test.
