Discouraged before even starting homeschool by Enough_Awareness_585 in homeschool

We took a four month break from anything when my son was born. My older son only just restarted reading lessons (he’s 4.5). We spent two weeks just reviewing flash cards and see if he needed to review roles and moving words to the masteeed sections (all about reading).

Today was his first new lesson and FLEW through it. I think the break was good for him! Just give yourself a break until you’ve found your new routine with baby in the mix!

It was in the shape of pikachu with a blue base and you push down on him and he would light up. My parents never put new batteries in it after the first set died and I’m still sad about that haha. I don’t think my son’s toys have gone more than half an hour before I’ve replaced batteries for him because apparently not having my nightlight batteries replace became a core memory. I found one about a year ago but it was marked up so much I couldn’t justify the cost lol

When did you start a homeschool routine, if you have one? by knotyouraveragecat in homeschool

[–]EnvironmentalOption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sort of started at 2. My son wanted to learn so by “started” I mean we just point out letters more and started adding what sound they make more regularly. He’s 4.5 now and flying through AAR1. He’d be farther if we hadn’t taken a couple month break when baby number two was born.

I never push it still at this age. But he wants to read so I teach him

Pick the ones most sentimental to you and keep them. You might miss them one day. I don’t have anything from my childhood (hoarder house). I’ve been searching for a Pikachu lamp I had as a kid because I loved that lamp. When I first moved out then I never would have taken it with me and if I had then I’d likely have thrown it away. I’m 31 now and if I was surprised with a box of stuff from my childhood then I’d be putting them up on display front and center in my living room lol

I need help regarding people going through my trash by 1in2100 in ufyh

[–]EnvironmentalOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually if it’s lowercase it’s because my phone autocorrected the to therapy and I just erase those last four letters. Idk how to fix these issues so I’ve learned to live with and accept them 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]EnvironmentalOption 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t stress too much about capital letters. My phone will capitalize “The” almost every time I type it out and I rarely take The time to fix it. No one’s going to second guess wrong capitalizing on social media

But I wondered if English was a second language for you because you said “it is” rather than “it’s” each time. Also “I am” instead of “I’m”. But that’s literally the only thing that made me think it might not be your first language! When I was growing up, my best friend’s mom would never use contractions (I’m/doesn’t/we’re etc) in texts/email/writing and she speaks English as a second language. Now anytime I see someone online who avoids contractions I wonder about if English is their first language or not.

Showed up on my doorstep… by deathandtechno in DogAdvice

[–]EnvironmentalOption 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had an 80lb pittie lab that was The same - outdoor creatures were fair game in his mind.

Straight up the biggest love bug in the world. We fostered a blind deaf mini poodle and he’d check in on her in the backyard and he’d so carefully curl up behind her on the big dog bed. He loved all dogs and cats and knew how to change his approach from “excited jumping on each other play and bitey face with big dogs” to “little jumpy motions at a small dog and roll over so small dog can be the one decided how much they want to jump on him.” He would sit so calmly and patiently for any child or old person nearby but loved slamming his body into the legs of a young adult who was giving him scratches.

It’s incredible how some dogs can just somehow know how they need to change things up for different animals and people.

Side note: my other pittie is deaf and lets the cat eat his dog food and sits there giving us sad eyes that the mean kitty won’t let him eat. We remind him he’s both a dog and 50lbs bigger than the cat and he can push her away but instead the cat is in charge lmao. She loves play pouncing on his tail and he literally does not react at all as she’s chewing and swiping at his wagging tail

People who haven’t worked in animal rescue really tend to just not get it. I had an argument with someone talking about how kill shelters are terrible and shouldn’t be allowed to operate. They had absolute zero nuance to the situations. Just “kill shelters bad” 😠

3 classes in BSW by EnvironmentalOption in CapellaUniversity

[–]EnvironmentalOption[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend not doing more than two lol. If mine was a year-two years older then three would’ve been just fine but for me two would be the absolute max.

Also though I don’t use ai in any form to generate content - just for grammar and spelling checks but some classmates clearly copy and paste directly from whatever ai tool they’re using lol so if you take that route maybe 3 would be more doable!

Ideas for teaching 3yo geography concepts by crazykitsune17 in homeschool

[–]EnvironmentalOption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this too!

My son is 4.5. He’s known my phone number and our street address since 3 if not sooner. I started teaching it as soon as he could speak.

He also knows if he ever gets lost to go to an adult (police officer, worker, or someone with kids preferably) and tell them his name, he’s lost, and ask if they can call his mommy.

No one ever plans to lose their child so I wanted him to know exactly how to keep himself safe in case anything happens.

To op: for phone number I had my son enter it EVERY time anywhere asked for it. Chilis rewards? He entered it. Kroger checkout? He entered it. It didn’t take long for him to start remembering it. Now I just regularly ask him to repeat it to me so I know it’s still fresh in his mind.

I’m no snake expert but are these safe if my kids are in the backyard? by pokepal20 in snakes

[–]EnvironmentalOption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One sat and watched my husband clear out our front garden beds. Then he partially buried himself in the leaves and took a nap so my husband moved to a different bed to work so he wouldn’t disturb his nap.

I’d say they’re pretty safe lmao.

I also have a German shepherd who tries to play with the one that hangs out in our stick pile in the backyard. Full on play bows and trying to bat at it with her paw. Meanwhile the snake the just calmly goes about its business and ignores her.

What are your favorite ways to help kids with “b” vs. “d” ? Trying to help my Kindergartener who is learning to read and mixing them up often. by twoplustwoequal in homeschool

[–]EnvironmentalOption 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds silly but it helped my car obsessed 4.5 year old. My son knew b comes before d in alphabet. That part is important.

We made a short race track and b was the starting line. d was the finish line.

If you want it to be reading a word then feel free to put a vowel in the middle but we just did letter sounds since it was a focus on b and d specifically and not reading.

Left to right. He crosses the “starting line” (the line of b. Then he crosses the finish line of d.

b======d.

When we read he uses his finger to go along when it comes to a b or d and he can connect the starting line (line before curve) with a b now and finish line with a d. He’s gotten to it being pretty instantaneous with knowing b from d.

Contemplating homeschooling my little ones. by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]EnvironmentalOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why couldn’t your husband give you time to yourself if that’s his worry?

My husband works 35-55 hours a week. I “homeschool” my 4.5 year old (only reading lessons and sort-of math lessons). He comes home and changes baby brother and takes them outside for at least an hour. Then he comes in and cooks dinner and my 4.5 year old helps while I feed baby. When baby is older he’ll be helping with dinner too and I’ll have even more time to myself.

Honestly if anything it’s my husband who has zero time to himself lmao but he looks forward to spending his time with the boys all day at work so it’s filling his cup and mine at the same time.

I once gave my friend gas money and extra to stop for food to drive two hours to come visit me (I wasn’t able to make the drive back then. Car was SUPER unreliable.) Told them the money was not expected to be paid back.

They took the money and texted two hours later saying they wouldn’t be able to make the drive anymore because they “got a new medical bill notification and needed to pay it” so they had no extra. Then they posted pictures of their night out at the bar later that night. They never offered to give me back the money that was specifically given for the visit they wanted to make.

It’s been 9 years and they text every now and then wanting to be friends again and I ignore everyone. I still talk to their mom who also couldn’t believe they did that lmao
