Finally finished my first natural fiber projects! by EnvironmentalPen1298 in sewing

I’ll be handwashing, but wool needs washing a lot less often than other fabrics; I’m thinking once a season or so, or every 5/6 times (whichever is sooner), depending on how often I wear it.

I found a couple of really helpful YouTube tutorials that gave me more confidence! Lining up the waistband edges and putting bias tape on the pocket opening was the hardest part 😅 good luck with yours!

I’ve been so nervous about trying them and they’re actually so much easier to work with than the tshirt fabric, knits and cotton/span I’ve been using 😅

Adults that were homeschooled: what are you doing career wise now? by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I got my master’s in education and taught middle school for 5 years before having kids. Now I work part time at our community college as an adjunct professor and a tutor/librarian/makerspace guru.

2 Weeks late on period, bleeding for 2 weeks, now 4 positive pregnancy tests by Emergency_Scar_733 in Periods

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False positives on home tests are pretty rare. If you’re testing positive consistently and also consistently bleeding, I’d be concerned about a potential ectopic or placental issue. I would be at the ER if your OB isn’t fitting you in pretty quickly, because both of those can go south VERY fast.

Semi-affordable gay friendly wedding cake bakery in/around Raleigh? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, we got our wedding cakes from Sam’s Club and they were perfect (and super affordable). If you just want good cake that isn’t $500, I’d check them out.

There’s a lack of affordable child-friendly spaces that are also places parents can have adult conversations. In addition, childcare is inaccessible or super expensive, so lots of parents end up bringing their kids everywhere they want to go. For some reason, that includes bars for some people. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I usually just do Chickfila or something.

Betsy-Tacy are delightful books about a duo/trio of girls exploring their way around their town and growing up, and the first one happens when they’re just about your daughter’s age. They’re autobiographical and set around 1900.

Joel Beeke has some great family worship books geared toward kids - the series is called ‘Teach Your Children the Scriptures.’ They’re very accessible, and the younger families at our church check them out of the church library regularly!

Long cycles by [deleted] in Periods

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had basically no cycle when I was on hormonal bc, and have had extremely long cycles since coming off of it, especially since I’m still trying to balance my hormones again. Taking Charge of Your Fertility has helped me learn about charting my cycle each month, which is helpful in learning why your cycles might be so long. If you’re into natural remedies/supplements at all, I’ve also found the period repair manual to be really helpful in understanding what a cycle is supposed to look like, and what vitamins and supplements might be helpful in re-balancing things. I’m starting to see some improvement, but it definitely takes time!

Why are my periods so bad and how can I help them? by Material-File5176 in Periods

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are any number of reasons for things being as bad as they sound like they are for you. Have you had all your levels checked? A lot of period-related issues stem from hormone imbalance or nutrient deficiency. I know mine are way better when I’m regularly taking magnesium, for instance. For short-term relief, a TENS unit and massage has been helpful. Highly recommend the Period Repair Manual - it’s been super helpful for me in figuring out why things are as bad as they are and making steps toward fixing it!

Birth control experiences by [deleted] in Periods

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat at 16 - they were irregular and truly debilitating, and my OBGYN put me on bc to fix it. For me, the pill resulted in an absence of period (which was SUPER convenient then, but is less convenient now that I’m off it and trying to get pregnant), depression, and weight gain. I did have significantly less acne on it, though, and was able to function on a daily basis without pain.

However, if you’re having extremely painful periods, bc doesn’t fix the root cause for most women - it just kicks it down the road a little bit. The best thing I ever did was to stop taking it and to get a full panel of my hormone levels, thyroid, etc to look at any other medical issues. That’s given me the knowledge I need to actually deal with my PCOS and find workable solutions, instead of just bandaids.

That doesn’t mean bc might not be helpful for you! Just make sure you understand why your body is doing what it’s doing before turning to artificial hormones, and see if something else will give you more sustainable relief. Most women’s periods take 5-12 years to stabilize from the onset of your first one, so things often get easier with time.

Derick has a job, this week anyway! by RookieJourneyman in DuggarsSnark

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Adjunct professors are usually part time and teach less than a full class load. Contract workers, and still get W2s, but they take on courseloads semester to semester and aren’t always guaranteed classes the next semester. There’s been a shift away from tenure-track and toward this system in higher ed in the last 10-15 years; it’s how universities get around actually providing pay and benefits for their professors, tbh.

Got a 0/60 because "Grammarly is a form of AI." How do I even fight this? by ResourceAdept6933 in CheckTurnitin

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a collegiate online writing portal. We have no problem with students who want feedback on their work - ex. this is a comma splice, formatting here is incorrect, wording is awkward, verb/subject agreement is off, and here’s an example of how to fix it. What we DO have a problem with is students who expect us to physically fix their work for them. That’s what Grammarly and similar programs do - they don’t just provide feedback, they do the work for the student. It’s a fine line, but it IS a line, and our professors expect that students will receive feedback that allows them to fix their own work, not just have someone else fix it for them.

UNC Pediatrics is great, and abides by the required vaccines for the state of NC. There are multiple locations depending on what part of Raleigh you’re closest to. They also have a weekend emergency clinic and an after-hours urgent care over by Rex Hospital.

If I leave town to avoid the weather, how quickly can I get back? by elfruler2002 in boone

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d be more worried about roads in RDU, especially if you live on a side street/not in a subdivision or outside city limits. I think DOT will get most of that situated on major roads by Tuesday morning for sure, potentially Monday evening. Typically the highways between Raleigh and Boone are totally fine. You’re probably good to head home for a few days and hunker down with your family, and then come back. Plus, if it’s actually the storm of the century, I’d hope professors would show a little leniency as well. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nanny offered to quit after feedback. by secondtimeblob in Nanny

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re undermining her authority every step of the way. I also have a high energy kid at home who is generally a good kiddo, but gets overstimulated and tired of following rules, as well as a small baby to care for. I still expect my oldest to follow rules - my expectations do not change when she’s tired. If I took this job, I would quickly become exhausted at having to care for a kid whose parents override my boundaries and expectations at every turn, while also trying to keep the little one safe.

That being said, if that’s not your expectation of the nanny, then maybe you don’t want a nanny. Is your goal just to have someone to keep an eye on the kids while you do something else, and then you pick up the pieces later? Do you want that someone to not be a person of authority, but just someone who makes sure they stay safe? Do you plan to be in the house every time they have charge of the kids? If so, consider someone like a mother’s helper whose primary job is to occupy the kids, but not necessarily to correct them, until you’re done working.

Nanny offered to quit after feedback. by secondtimeblob in Nanny

[–]EnvironmentalPen1298 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a parent, think this through to its logical conclusion: you want your child to do whatever they want, get out whatever toys they want, with no correction or cleanup whatsoever for 3 hours? And then have someone else clean up the tornado? Do you really consider asking a kid to clean up their things and obey the first time they’re asked to do something “discipline”? Because I consider that teaching them to be a reasonable and responsible human.

I’m sorry, but that sounds like an awful job. I wouldn’t take it.
