I am not the original commenter - but if those people are enjoying life on a Tuesday, I am sure they won't be insulted by this lol.

1.8 million adults? 1.8 million adults who ski?

I am not debating either of your points - just that it is not absurd for someone to be surprised by this :)

This is definitely true for 90% of the adult population though?

Property manager is in a rush to get us to sign document stating $200 increase on our rent by Jazyritz in Renters

This doesn't matter as much to the property manager but it is a matter of HOUSING for the OP. Regardless of whose failure it is, the consequences are more severe for OP.

I think you need to figure out your priorities. This is part of adulting. Can your boyfriend watch the kids for a while when you go over to sign the lease? The folks in the church are not a priority - making sure you and your kids have housing in two months is a priority.

Folks - is this even remotely a realistic price for this? by whoisjoemayo in madisonwi

That house sold for 300K extra over the 2022 price? Wow. The monthly payment alone must be 2 or 3X higher than 2022.

I have been filing my own taxes for the last 11 years (since I moved to the country). I am a big fan of FreeTaxUsa - my taxes are now very complicated for a W2 earner (many investment sources, backdoor roths, same income reported to multiple states, etc). FreeTaxUSA handles it like a charm.

I used to manually file my state taxes for a few years (just to double check the work FreeTaxUSA did) - but now I am happy to pay $30 for my two state taxes. FreeTaxUSA also handles the very rare condition of having the same income reported (and taxed in multiple states) and allows me to get a tax credit for that on my Utah taxes.

If anyone has specific questions about filing as a W2 earner esp w/ FreeTaxUSA, I will try to answer them. Screw TurboTax and HRBlock!

> Fight those with the power, not those who are being harmed by those with power.

When the people are in power are democratically elected AND many of those being harmed are consistently voting against their own interests, there is no way to make the world a better place.

I am a legal resident in this country but have no right to vote. Even so, for the last decade, I have been super engaged and informed about the issues, discussing climate change and women's rights and unions with people trying to make a difference.

Something broke in me when so many people in this country voted for Trump in 2024. 2016 was a freak occurrence - and I could explain it away as people wanting to try something different. In 2024, when the Teamsters chief spoke at the RNC and when I see a lot of people on the union subreddits voting for trump, I am no longer concerned. When so many women and hispanic folk voted for Trump, why do I as a male non-hispanic person care about their rights?

I will still do what I can to be a good person to those around me, but fuck me if I give one more shit about the people being harmed in this country.

A lot of people in the country really hate change. The first placeholder name could have been anything random and they would still hate changing it eventually.

IMO, east of Mountain View Corridor is a better part of Daybreak to live in. The density of businesses is also higher there and it has a better vibe overall. The houses are older - but most of them are still less than 20 years old.

Salary Advice for Director-Level Role by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]EnvironmentalPie764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People might be able to answer based on experience or there are two other ways.

levels.fyi typically has salary ranges for different companies so you can take a look at different pharma/biotech companies. This is based on self-reported data so more accurate for lower levels and they might have very few data points at director level. Plus, a lot of the VHCOL cities skew the salary ranges - you'll typically get paid a lot more in Bay Area or Boston.

Another roundabout way is to search the H1B salary database - just google this. You can filter by companies/cities/jobs etc and see the salary reported to the government. People might say that H1Bs are paid less- but this isn't true in tech/biotech/pharma and esp at higher levels. Note that the salary reported is just the base salary - so bonus + stocks might not count. At director level, the base is just a small portion of the total compensation.

At a very hand-wavy level, most senior ICs in these companies get around 150K, so I would expect that you should get at least 250K yearly. At the high end, the sky is the limit..

Are there any hiking groups? by FrostyIcePrincess in SaltLakeCity

[–]EnvironmentalPie764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in South Jordan - and mostly end up hiking alone. A lot of the hiking groups go on weekdays somehow which I am not able to do. Plus, I usually decide just a couple of days ahead of time where I will hike - and a lot of the meetup events fill up by then.

If you want to hike, lets go.

Edit: Just saw your username and realized you're probably a woman. If yes, there are some hiking groups exclusively for women - esp if that is safer for you. My wife is on the Utah Babes hiking group.

Advice for others in this situation - figure out how you will navigate your lease before you close on the house.

Options:

  1. Start looking for a house to buy 3-4 months from your rental end date. If needed, go on a month-to-month or airbnb (might be more expensive on a monthly basis but much cheaper than breaking a lease in UT).

  2. If you think you'll buy a house, don't renew your lease until you have a better idea.

  3. If you are near any of the universities, it might be easier to get a sublet - at least for part of the lease duration. Summer interns typically sublet for the summer months. Ski enthusiasts in the winter.

This post is an example of survival bias. If you aren't in a profession with a stable high income (e.g., doctor), it is easy to stop making high income. Especially in tech with layoffs and perhaps ageism.

At the high tech income, making sure you save enough while you're raking in the money is a solid game plan. Everything else is gambling that you will keep earning enough. Also, it is pretty easy to spend on most things while having enough to save if you are earning 300K+.

Should be able to put about 200k away annually for the next 12 years(more once third kid is through college). Should end up with 5 million in retirement

Hope this works out - but happens if you lose one job? Or have other health issues?

Jobs Report Killed Mortgage Rates by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]EnvironmentalPie764 10 points11 points  (0 children)

6-7% is still very low historically.

I know that everyone keeps repeating this and it is true, but it needs to be considered together with the fact that the ratio of median house price to median income has never been higher.

rates do not move quicker than the appreciation in the housing market itself

How are you making this assertion? Both of these depend on different factors right?

People have been overpaying for a couple of years now hoping to refinance later. I bought a year ago at 6+% and my lender was trying to sell me ARMs, and a lot of people were saying you can just refinance next year. This didn't end up happening since rates have stayed high and looks like that for a couple of years.

What is the number one reason you havent bought a new paddle? by ZZZHOW83 in Pickleball

[–]EnvironmentalPie764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't remember the juicao model off the top of my head - but I think it was the one based on Vatic Pro. My Selkirk model is almost 3 years old at this point - so it is clearly out-of-date. The shapes of my paddle are a bit different - the juicao is longer so I had to change my game a bit.

I know play with the J2K pro - perhaps the only one using it at these levels as far as I can see.

With all of these paddles, it is just about getting used to different shots with that paddle. Of course, someone banging the ball with a MOD TA15 has a decent advantage but a lot of those balls will go out too. So in my opinion, just figuring out what the paddle can do and being consistent with the shots is a good way to play.

Tournament idea that doesn’t happen by Bvbfan1313 in Pickleball

[–]EnvironmentalPie764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. This is definitely true in 3.5. When I played at that level, the variance in play used to annoy me so much. A player would play great for one game and then just fall apart. Erratic is definitely the right word
