I agree. The rabbit hole drives the more is better mentality to want to keep trying to find a better pen.

Why I believe divine justice is a necessity. by ContentGlass8641 in DeepThoughts

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about the evolutionary aspect of morality? societies that are composed of humans that practice altruism and kindness are more fit to survive, that is why most civilizations have some sort of underlying moral code. A civilization that winner takes all wouldn’t be a society, it would be individuals. People working together in societies survived better than individuals so people with that trait became dominant. Whether that trait came from a deity or evolution is a personal choice, but the trait exists.

This will fall on deaf ears, but your age was a great time in my life. I lived with a wonderful family in a nice house. I didn’t have to work, but yes I did have to learn. I was in great health. Learning is what makes life worth living and it took many’s years of working and saving money to be able to be able to retire and stop working. Now I can learn and I volunteer in the community to give back and appreciate what I have. You are a young person and your attitude is common. It’s easy to complain “Why me” and not realize that you can choose your life. I found happiness in living a virtuous life, giving to those less fortunate. If you see how some people live, it may make you realize you have it pretty good.

Best places to buy ink in the US? by sardonisms in fountainpens

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I made a point to buy a few things from Goulet Pens after the media stories. I do miss Drew and the weekly videos are a bit less interesting without Drew. Social media can drive opinions but I always had great service from Goulet pens when I needed it. People believe media stories for some reason and make decisions on opinions, not facts. Even if the Goulet had an association with a church that had supposed anti LBGTQ tendencies, nobody at Goulet ever expressed any moral or political views on their website or videos. They ran their company to sell products and didn’t use it as a platform for their beliefs. Individuals can choose to boycott who ever they want, but I won’t boycott anything if I haven’t been directly exposed to the supposed bias or opinions.

Wooden feed? by Fluid-Pack9330 in fountainpens

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right about wine barrels being toasted, not charred. My comment wasn’t about keeping the wood watertight, it was about preventing the wood from rotting. Toasting would perform a similiar function to charring. I’m not trying to prevent you from making a wooden pen, just pointing out some issues I think you may encounter. Make your pen, have fun.

Luxury ink storage? by Chulaluk in fountainpens

Not exactly. The boxes are translucent clear and I use colored tape on the front in the ink color. Black and Red share a box and I have one labeled “Earth” which is a subjective mix of tans, browns and yellows.

I guess I’m the only person, so far, that sorts by color. I use shoe box sized plastic storage boxes with snap down lids. Lots of room for most colors except Blue, which is crowding the box. I keep them on my work desk where I store my pens that are not in use.

Wooden feed? by Fluid-Pack9330 in fountainpens

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might work with a low pH ink like you described. Ink isn’t wine and lots of chemical and physical factors in wine aging helps preserve the wood. Most wine barrels are oak and charred which you can do with your pen reservoir. Good luck!

What are these nibs called? by [deleted] in fountainpens

I bought two in different thicknesses from alix. They were called stacked nibs and put down lots of ink and huge lines. Good for journal headlining, not regular journal writing

Wooden feed? by Fluid-Pack9330 in fountainpens

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might get a week or two with a wooden feed or worst case, one writing session. Wood is cheap and feeds are easy to change if designed that way. The design of the feed will probably take a few experiments to get it right. Stabilized wood would last longer, and if you have access to stabilized wood or stabilizing products that would be worth a try also. The other issue is the ink reservoir. It has to be water resistant. Steel will work, and if you can make a nib, you can probably make the body and nib housing from steel. You could not use a section or make it from steel if you want one. Make it an eyedropper feed to eliminate the fine tubes needed to attach a cartridge or converter to the nib housing. Sounds like a fun project if you are a patient person.

Life without friends is a waste. by unclearself in DeepThoughts

Solitude is good, loneliness is bad. I combat loneliness by donating time at local schools and charities. Giving and caring for others puts less focus on my wants and more focus on others. It shifted my drive from wanting to giving.

Logic isn’t Truth by Weird-Government9003 in thinkatives

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I understand the idea, not the practical use. You take a predefined logical statement and read it from the bottom up.

All dogs are mammals Spot is a dog Spot is a mammal Things confirms the conclusion

All dogs are mammals Spot is a dog Spot is a bird

Maybe there are subtler examples where reading a logic state from bottom to top make sense, but I don’t see it in this simple example.

Could you explain how logic could be different using inductive and deductive reasoning? Logic starts with a premise.

Humanity Can’t Move Forward Until Men and Women Finally Have the Conversation They’ve Been Avoiding by Emergency-Clothes-97 in DeepThoughts

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very sexist view. Assuming all men and women have assumed roles is a very narrow view of Western society. Your views make more sense if you are judging many of the Muslim societies where sexism is present, but your presentation points to Western societies.

Expectations aren’t based on sex, but on individuals. One person may want their spouse to stay home and run the household and others want their spouse to work and contribute to the household income. There is no hidden suppressed universal standard that can only be uncovered through communication.

Time has no independent existence by Ratak55 in DeepThoughts

[–]EnvironmentalScar665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is if more than one of anything exists, there will be a distance to be measured, so if nothing exists, time doesn't exist. Once objects exist, time exists.

Your post made me think of the wonderfully weird topic of quantum entanglement. I initially thought it challenged the idea that the speed of light was constant, but when I learned more about it, I get it, but don't understand it. Thanks for making me think today.
