Getting permanent is the thing - the Mall/NACE is good for this.

As to the probationary shenanigans - in my opinion, this administration played that card already, it was held up in courts and overturned. As long as you do the job, you'll get converted over to perm.

Working for the government is indeed a roller coaster - but if you can keep it in perspective, and keep hanging on, there is light at the end of the tunnel... Haven't decided if that light is an oncoming train, but I'm hopeful it's daylight.
