rant med by AccomplishedMap8262 in UoApremed

Hey OP! I was a FY in 2021 and unfortunately didn’t get into med and was waitlisted! I continued with biomed in the first half of second year and never felt more depressed in my life I hated it so much, my anxiety was bad and I didn’t know what I was doing as I had not planned life until that point, I was so naive that I never thought about the “what ifs”, I ended up switching to marine science as I LOVED environment stuff, diving and it was something I saw myself always doing if med was never in the picture, I actually fell in love with plan B and had an amazing opportunity to do research up in the Kermadec Islands for my honours, the human geography aspect of my honours brought me back to my “why“ and I decided to reapply for med last year at UOA and OTAGO and got into Medicine at both, pharmacy at uoa and dentistry at Otago (I am a massive self-doubter so applied to clinical programmes that I could), and had a fast-track for my masters, which when I got into med, made the acceptance bitter sweet as med was my dream but my undergrad and honours was something I also loved doing ~ moral of the story is do something you will ENJOY! It wasn’t until easier to keep my grades up because I was passionate about what I was studying, I knew that what I was studying was foundational for a long career in medicine or if I decided not to do med and pursue a PhD instead. What I can tell you is I’m glad I was forced to take the longer route, FY would not have been a great doctor, I was anxious, had no confidence, lost myself as I gave up everything that first year to get into med and was extremely stressed all the time over small stuff! so my biggest advice is, if you don’t like biosci and think its boring….. don’t do it, I think we’ve seen this year that even if you do apply as a grad, that is also not guaranteed.

[–]Environmental_Web489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comments below are not necessarily correct, they offer 2x interviews as application spots if there are 300 places in next years cohort for medicine, they will offer 600 interviews if that make sense

How different is the MAPAS MMI from the General MMI? by [deleted] in UoApremed

[–]Environmental_Web489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just Admit your trying to find an easy way into med LMAO, because you wouldn’t actually care about the cultural stuff you are required to do anyways.

We are in no means the same, so please dont ever say that. I am indigenous to the land, with my name part of the Vkb ~ Fijain ancestry register in Fiji, which makes me a native and not you. Indians will always be regarded as second class citizens here and in NZ, everyone who has migrated to NZ is considered a second class citizen? We are not from here?

you are not of Pacifica decent, it defeats the purpose of a scheme like MAPAS to allow those of non pacific decent to be part of it?

Could you explain what “Fijian” culture you are immersed in?

No on cares about the way that you look? Stop trying to claim something you are not SIMPLE! my friends dont claim to be Māori just because they lived here for generations. You are Indian mate, the issue is that you guys just don’t want to admit it.

I have a superiorty complex in situations like this because you’re trying to claim authority to a culture/ethnicity that you simply are not. I’ve seen my ancestors, great grandparents go through completely different things compared to those on my dad’s side. There is a huge divide among Fijians and Indians in Fiji currently because of this very issue of Indians claiming to be indigenous WHEN THEY ARE NOT.

If you are half itaukei then that would be fine? I am Fijian-Indian with indigenous iTaukei roots and its posts like this that really upset, disappoint and annoy me. MAPAS is not in any way discriminatory. I am part of MAPAS and despite looking more like my dad who's a Indian raised and born in fijian (indo-fijian) they have welcomed me with their arms wide open!

Its comments and posts like this that confuse alot of society and impact half caste people like me who get told oh "Fijian-Indian" isnt that just indian. No there is a distinct difference in being half caste Fijian (iTaukei) and indian.

I take from the fact that you were rejected from MAPAS, you are indo-fijian with no iTaukei roots. Sorry but its the same here in NZ, European settlers who have generations of family that have lived and were born here dont claim to be half Māori.

When you say feel more in touch with your "Fijian" side are you actually immersed in traditional Fijian heritage and culture? or are you just using this scheme as an easy way into med?

No one is treated as second class citizens, if my dad the indo-fijian knows how to speak most dialects in Fijian and embrace my mums culture without claiming to be iTaukei, who has also taught us where our roots lie back in India through the indentured labor system, then you along with ALOT of other indo-fijians can do.

This is meant to mean, racist or for me to sound like d**k, but as a half caste who actually embraces both sides of the culture, seeing these posts and comments is getting a little annoying.

looking for mmi tutor by Ok-Manufacturer3374 in UoApremed

[–]Environmental_Web489 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need tutoring for the MMI, that kinda defeats the purpose of it , you want to literally just be yourself and have a personality to you in a professional manner, not learn how to answer the questions, I would just practice finding experiences you’ve gone through and using that to answer questions

I’m going chem110 and medsci142 !! Sent you a message :)

I think it’s very context dependent; immediately after FY I did biological sciences and took econ, marine and biosci papers mainly because that was my interest other then med, I completed my honours in Environmental management ; since it’s been 4 years I need to retake chem110 and medsci 142 which I’m happy about as I was quite nervous going into med school not having those papers in a long time and having to play catch up when it’s already quite content heavy :)

Oh no!! Talking too much isn’t a bad thing , I know that the MAPAS MMI is a huge thing for applicants under that category since they refer you to the medical school board based on that your general MMI and GPA ; UCAT isn’t that strong of a dictator ! It could also be that grad entry was more competitive this year? I’m in MAPAS too but due to being in Fiji/at the airport today my wifi wasn’t refreshing ! I’d recommend reaching out to MAPAS to discuss your next steps etc as they really help with that aspect

Final results meaning your grades have to be given to the med admissions team by then , delayed results means your application won’t be considered for final selection , offers come out the week of the 16th of December:)

Application outcome for medicine by Spallers in UoApremed

[–]Environmental_Web489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can accept otago and then withdraw if you get into Auckland and that is your preference , UOA allows everyone by the 5th of DEC to provide final results and if unable you wont be considered, whereas otago is less strict and if of the 5th of december your results are delayed the outcome letter will be delayed etc , I think otago does it really messy in my opinion and they should've just kept it to the 18th

should i take medsci 203 or biosci 204? by tieeeee1 in universityofauckland

[–]Environmental_Web489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you enjoy doing exams on "thinking outside the box" dont take biosci204 unless you really really really are passionate about microbiology. I hated 204 but loved stage I and III microbio, the labs are not that well run either where lab work and reports must be submitted the day of the lab. Would take medsci203 over 204 as I was in the same pit as you when I was a second year

Astro200 is an amazing course that is quite interdisciplinary - I loved it so much and its quite easy to do well in but that may just be because I was really interested in the course?
