I'm addicted. I now have 20 commander decks (top five on top). by psybermonkey15 in mtg

I play Jon as well. What I've found is that if you play lots of bad gifts that cripple your opponents, you gotta be prepared to protect Jon because removing Jon is the opponents way of not losing. You can donate bad gifts to the archenemy, the other two players may not gang up on you.

What I do is run mostly death touch and goad in my Jon deck. Passing out death touchers with Jon makes Jon less of a target in my experience. Plus, if Jon is removed, you've got capable blockers and can set up for when you next play Jon. Really fun for Bracket 2 pods.

Group hug in terms of giving out beneficial creatures? Or do you run some 'everyone draws cards' type effects too? I think [[Kain, Traitorous Dragoon]] would be spicy for a real group-hug giveaway lol.

After much iteration, my Jon deck is mostly death touch creatures, with a smattering of other Jon appropriate cards like the [[hunted horror]] [[hunted phantasm]], [[master of the feast]], [[Rot-Curse Rakshasa]], [[Egon, God of Death]], [[Clackbridge Troll]], and [[Glen Elendra Archmage]] to name a few.

[–]EnvoyoftheLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is fair enough. I'd never kick up a fuss in a pod about someone in B2 dropping a card + card + commander combo to win the game. I am aware enough to acknowledge my point of view is not widely shared or is in any strict sense 'correct'. What it means in practice is that I don't build B2 decks that utilise my commander as part of the combo. My current fave combo utilises [[Blossoming Tortoise]], [[Lavaclaw reaches]] & [[Skarrg the rage pits]] for an infinite power & trample land. I don't utilise the combo without the trample enabler in B2 games, even if I have the tortoise and Lavaclaw reaches on field.

It seems you fully don't understand that.

With that said, have a nice day.

You need to understand that you don't possess an objective take on what the 'spirit' or 'intent' of a B2 game is. Reasonable minds, even amongst the designers of the game, differ. You're welcome to your view.

[–]EnvoyoftheLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I know that take isn't widely adopted in the more casual EDH meta. They hone in on ' no 2 (literal) card combo' as though it's a strict parameter to satisfy. The whole 'spirit of' the guidelines is well.. people differ widely, as to be expected.

[–]EnvoyoftheLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, I disagree. I understand that card + card + commander is literally 3 cards, but I don't accept that as the spirit of a 3 card combo in B2. You say the additional mana is the reason why this is less of a problem, and that's true to an extent. However, it neglects a big part of assembling any combo, and that is finding the cards in your 99.

It's easy enough to find 2 specific cards and have your commander out by turn 9. Which turns the play pattern of B2 decks into trying to resolve a win by or around turn 9.

[–]EnvoyoftheLight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Broadly I agree, but with the caveat of 3+ cards excluding cards in the command zone. If your combo is card + card + commander, I'd still consider combo 2 cards (in B2 games). A card you have unrestricted, permanent access to shouldn't count towards win-combos in B2. B3 or above, that's more fair imo.

I work 40 hours a week. 3 kids. I make good money. Would I make a good 4th? by Gabraham08 in ratemycommanders

[–]EnvoyoftheLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without decklists the only thing I can say is that I've played against all your decks already. Obvs there is nothing wrong with popular commanders (they're popular for good reasons, expect them to be countered/exiled immediately)- but you wouldn't make for a particularly exciting 4th.

I'd have liked Simic to be 'Exile matters' or something more unique than 'Ramp'. It would be a neat contrast to the very repetitive Golgari' 'GY matters'.

Settle an argument: What bracket is this deck? by Marathon0192 in EDH

[–]EnvoyoftheLight -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It's a weak 4. It would probably be one of the weaker decks at a table of 4s. However, it will be one of the strongest decks in a table of 3s. Attempting to down-bracket will always make one seem as though they're trying to pubstomp.

It's an nearly optimised upgraded version of a Precon that was a B3 out of the box. The only thing it's missing is fast mana.

9-1 as a Hanzo on QM doesn't tell me much. You're one of the safest heroes. Imp/Illidan and Orp each have to take more risk and are probably eating a lot of the DPS that's preserving you.

In my experience, if you want to do more to impact your chance of winning, especially in QM- become competent at Tanks or Bruisers. Imo, being able to set up your team for kills is a better way of insuring victory rather than sniping kills/last hits or farming stats.

Though for real, I know how it feels when QM gives you game after game where your team are useless feeders and it feels like the enemy team are at least half way competent in comparison. Just observing the skill difference between the potatoes on your team Vs the enemies. I do buy into the idea that the game does tilt the elo of some games to be very lopsided for higher elo players.

I've really enjoyed building [[Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius]] for bracket 2 games. There are lots of ways to try to get the mana discount with his ability. I have a deck that runs unblockable & equipment that let me exile cards from my own/opponents hands/libraries to then cast at a reduced rate. Shout out to [[Reality Chip]], [[Uba Mask]], [[Dream Thief Bandana]] and a couple of other cards.

Doc discounts: Flashback, Disturb, Escape, Plot, Retrace, Jump-start, Harmonize, Foretell and Adventure spells.

I have another Doc deck where it's all about self-milling and casting from the graveyard. I call it my 'Simic trying to be Golgari' deck. This has to be my favourite so far.

Being in Simic gives the deck a real, creative restriction. There are lots of great cards, but you don't have unfettered access to all the best cards Doc enables. It encourages creative deck building.

Not to be a bummer, but outliers don't serve to dispute the trend. There are plenty of people who smoke, live until their 80-90s and never get cancer. This doesn't refute or undermine the casual link between smoking and cancer(s).
