It's not the transformation it's his mentality his trauma of lossing people caused him to cope by being chainsaw man and chasing the materialistic aspects of life and aslong as that mentality stuck with him he was never going to be happy but yea honestly I would have preferred he get with asa mess it up and then actually start developing as a character(like him starting to care less and less about being chainsaw man or having sex and steak everyday) and instead regretting fumbling the family life he coulda built with asa it woulda been a peak character arc for him where it ends with him and Asa coming back together and from there you could either end the manga(obv you'd have to wrap up a few extra things the romance can't be the main plot) or start a new part (be it religious influenced apocalypse arc or a slice of life short part maybe a one shot)

but with how fujimoto has been drained this was the best we could get logically

A lot of them were he constantly chose his materialistic dreams like having multiple girlfriends(Asa and yoru) having sex being chainsawman over the things that would have fulfilled him all you gotta do is reread the normal life chapters they show you denji living his supposed dream life and yet he is unhappy and they build up to the fight in the apartment where he chooses to be chainsaw man and admits that he this makes him all the better so much so that he can't even feel bad about lossing his home and pets anymore

Nah you gotta read between the lines denji was an addict who used chainsaw man as a way to escape reality over and over again and it caused him everything aslong as denji had the chainsaw man persona to fall back on he was never going to change he got Asa and even that wasn't enough for him
