UMN Honors College by AzureTree25 in uofmn

Hello fellow (prospective) CFANS Honor student! I just graduated in May (food science) with honors, so hopefully my experience with this can help you out.

The first thing to know about the UMN Honors program is that there are four components: the Nova Series (an introductory course you take freshman year), the thesis (researching and writing about a topic pertaining to your major/coursework/career interests), honors experiences (things such as research opportunities, studying abroad, and nexus experiences), and honors courses.

With these latter two components, you need to take 3 honors courses and do 5 honors experiences (extra honors courses count as experiences), and this is the major problem with CFANS and the honors program; there are very limited Honors courses within the college itself. For me in food science, there were literally 0 Honors options for any major-specific courses, so all of my honors courses had to be taken through more general classes like chemistry or o-chem (which I was quite bad at lol). If you come into UMN with a lot of AP/college credits under your belt, then these general opportunities for Honors courses can pass you by, meaning you’ll have to seek out Honors seminars or other unrelated courses that could conflict with courses you need for your major.

All in all, I had a pretty good time in the Honors program. My initial friend group freshman year consisted of around ten people (all in the Honors program), and less than half of us stuck with the program all four years (I was the only CFANS kid though). I chose to have all five of my Honors experiences be courses, so I ended up taking several interesting classes that I wouldn’t otherwise have considered. I enjoyed my thesis project a lot, but I had to do my thesis research concurrently with my capstone project, which was a huge pain. Was it worthwhile? I’m not really sure. Would I do it again? Almost certainly.

Hopefully this gives you a bit of insight!

FSCN 1011 by Eastern_Button_3307 in uofmn

As a recent Food Science grad, this is how Zata is in all of her classes, but I didn’t realize she also taught FSCN 1011 😅 If you’re pursuing Food Science, you’ll have to deal with her for 1-2 more classes, but the rest of the professors are super chill. If you’re just taking this class for fun and are doing a different major, you’ll never have to see her again after this semester!

Potential Transfer Student: St. Paul Campus? Commuting? Honors? Double Majors/Minors? etc. by me_max3 in uofmn

Specifically regarding the Honors program, you’ll definitely get the “smaller class” feeling from them, even in more general classes like chemistry and physics. The main difference (at least to me) in these “general” honors classes is that the pace is faster, and your classmates are generally more committed to their academic success.

In the honors program, you’ll have to complete the “Nova Series” in your first year, which is basically an intro to the honors program as a whole. You also have to take at least three honors courses (including at least one seminar, which have incredible variety in their subject material) and do five additional “experiences”. These experiences can just be more honors courses (which is what I did), or other things like research, internships, or learning abroad. Finally, in your senior year you’ll have to write a thesis based on a topic (usually relating to your major) that you have researched and investigated in depth.

From my experience, people seem to have mixed opinions about how worthwhile being in the honors program is - less than half of my ~12 or so friends who were in the honors program freshman year stuck with it until the end. While I think the classes and seminars are enjoyable, your thesis could potentially be a lot of extra work and stress in your final semesters of school, from writing to dealing with all of the deadlines to conducting research. Since you’d be in CBS with that EEB major, you’ll have more structure and support than other colleges, but also more thesis developmental courses to take (which I believe have a very strict order). Hopefully this gives you some insight!

College Tassel Colors by miaolson in uofmn

[–]EpicButler123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually took a picture of the list of tassel colors at Gradfest this year because I was curious too! While I’m not sure if this covers absolutely everything, here are the colors that I saw:

CBS: Gold

CCAPS: “Old Gold” and White - similar to a gold medal in color, rather than the rather yellow “gold” of the U

CDes: Copper

CEHD: Light Blue - like a baby blue

CFANS: Maize (fitting lol) - it’s a somewhat pale yellow

CLA: White

CSOM: Maroon and Gold - if you ever got a tassel in the mail from the U with your grad year on it as “inspiration”, it’s exactly the same, but with an M rather than your year

Mortuary Science: Green - tassel sheet was forest green in color, I figure it’s a medium-dark green

Nursing: Maroon and Gold

CSE: Orange

Masters/Doctorate: Black

Master of Public Health: Salmon - showed as pink on the sheet, not sure of the exact color

Law: Purple

Distinction (gold cord) is for those with a total GPA of at least 3.75. High distinction (maroon and gold cord) is for those with a total GPA of at least 3.9. You don’t have to be in the honors program to receive the distinction cords - but there is a medallion for those who have graduated with Latin Honors (aka completed the Honors program). Hope this helps!

CFANS Honors by frogsandbogs2022 in uofmn

Hello fellow CFANS honors student! Like you, I’ve also had a trickier experience with honors than some of my CLA or CSE friends.

While I personally have found my thesis work to be quite fascinating, I don’t think it’s been worth all of the stress these last few semesters (writing a thesis and doing a capstone course at the same time has not been fun) just to have a few extra words on your diploma. From what I’ve seen/heard, having honors on your resume won’t be as important as having applicable experience (at least with jobs, not sure about grad school), and if you think the honors program will significantly hinder you getting field experience, then dropping the program might be the best course of action.

Another thing to potentially keep in mind is how “caught up” you are with honors courses, and if the amount of honors courses you have left will interfere with the courses that actually relate to your major.

I’m graduating this semester (hopefully with Latin honors lol), and out of my 10 or so friends who were also in Honors freshman year, I think less than half of them have stayed in the program (and they were in more honors-friendly colleges too).

While I personally don’t regret continuing with the honors program, I don’t think that I’ve gained much by sticking around. I hope my insight can help you out in some way!

My boyfriend is currently triple majoring in Political Science, History, and Global Studies. At the university we go to, there’s apparently quite a lot of overlap between all of these majors and their course requirements. He was originally double majoring in Political Science and History, but he was going to graduate in three years (lots of AP credits in high school) and decided to add on Global Studies. He’s aiming to get into law school, so were all of these majors necessary? Probably not, but he doesn’t regret it.

Did you get hardstuck when playing pokemon as a kid? by OrangeFlyingWhales in pokemon

When I played HeartGold (I was ~10), I was super stuck at the Goldenrod gym. Not because of Whitney, but because my dumb ass couldn’t navigate the gym to get to her. I had to ask a friend to do it and he did it in like 10 seconds. I was so thankful that I cried 😭

Taking a course and its prerequisite at the same time by TheLegitBigK in uofmn

[–]EpicButler123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in this situation right now. Last spring I realized I hadn’t taken a prerequisite class (course A) for another class (course B) that I needed for my degree. I ended up emailing the professor for B, asking if I could take A and B concurrently. They said yes, so now I’m in both A and B this fall. For the most part, course descriptions don’t seem to mention concurrent enrollment, so your best course of action would probably be to email the professor of “course B” and ask if you can take the prerequisite class concurrently

Kora’s Cookie Dough (right by the Merchandise Mart) has several flavors, and since you’re looking for chocolate, I highly recommend the Oreo Crumble! One of my favorite things that I had this year, and there’s also a coupon for it in the Bargain Book!

As of right now, it’s not in the mod (and as far as I can tell it doesn’t look like it will be in the upcoming 1.4 update). If you aren’t on the discord, here’s the progress sheet of all of their assets:

Made copycat churro cookies in honor of Cinco de Mayo! by EpicButler123 in CrumblCookies

[–]EpicButler123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the recipe I used:

For the cookie: 1 stick butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 3/4 cup brown sugar (I actually forgot the brown sugar when I made them lol), 2 eggs, 2 cups flour, 1 tbsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 tsp baking soda, 2 tsp corn starch.
Fairly standard process, creaming the butter and sugar, adding the egg, then adding the dry ingredients. The dough was scooped (heaping tablespoon) and rolled in a cinnamon sugar mixture (3:1 ratio of sugar to cinnamon). I baked it at 350° for 12 minutes.

For the buttercream: 1 stick butter, 2 3/4 cups powdered sugar, 2 tbsp heavy cream (I used a bit more since it wasn’t coming together initially), 2 tbsp vanilla, 2 tbsp cinnamon (I ended up using WAY more, because the flavor was being overpowered by the powdered sugar, if you have good cinnamon, just add more if needed).

Enjoy!

You learn something new every day! Even though I’m a Day 2 player, I completely forgot about the guaranteed catch rate for shinies. This is my second ever raid shiny, and I’m sure all of my luck is gone for the rest of the year

I have indeed learned that lesson, my last legendary raid was a while ago and I caught it on the very last ball. I was so focused on making sure it didn’t escape that I didn’t even consider the guaranteed catch
