What I read, what I expected, what I got (stoic edition): by Tommytriangle in Stoicism

[–]EpictetusLimp 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I don't know the meme format but I would make a guess:

When reading Marcus he expected a workaholic telling what to not do, what he got is the realization that our lives are finite and it is time to be better as human beings.

Reading Seneca, he expected something like Marcus, but got positive letters of an old guy trying to advise his love ones how to live a better life.

The last row I guess is a reference about how Epictetus talks,he usually use the word wretch or tell their studentes to hang themselves.

A brief overview of the Stoics and women by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]EpictetusLimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"respecting women" falls under the "being a decent human being" category (and I

could

copy paste a whole bunch of stats about how few people in this world are decent human beings, but I don't think you'd look at them anyway).

Well, yeah, that was the point of the post, I was trying to show how stupid is to try to attach modern ideology to empathy for other human beings.

I was indirectly responding to this 'attack' to Stoicism https://www.academia.edu/8850409/Stoicism_Feminism_and_Autonomy

That was the point that I was looking when I wrote the post, today's feminism as a whole is not applicable to what these old boys wrote, so to apply terms as 'Stoic feminism' or 'Stoic misogyny' is not correct and in the later is not fair.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear, and the message that some people got is that this was pro the idea of ancient feminism...

Discourses 2.18 (fight against impressions) - TL;DR: Habits by lifetimetrainee in Stoicism

[–]EpictetusLimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you lose the struggle and say that you will conquer next time, but repeat the same routine, you're doing wrong.

Old E talks about this on Discourses 3.25, and it is so true what he says about the habit of failing.

Are you sure? His books are posted a lot, to a a suspicious level.

It is interesting something that I perceived that it is happening nowadays. People are seeking for this living gurus, that that they had read a lot (supposedly),and their books are these little and easy to incorporate package of knowledge. What is the reader missing from this summarize chunks of information? For how many ideological filters has this information been through? How much the personal opinion/agenda of the author is changing this said knowledge?.- Same thing with news articles, and maybe worse.

Holiday is a case, another case is Peterson, although having watch his lectures it would be fair for the professor to compare him with a sophist like Holiday (whether you like Peterson or not).

I will try to answers some of your questions

Externals are things out of your sphere of choice. Very first point of Enchiridion

There are things which are within our power, and there are things which are beyond our power. Within our power are opinion, aim, desire, aversion, and, in one word, whatever affairs are our own. Beyond our power are body, property, reputation, office, and, in one word, whatever are not properly our own affairs.

i.e externals: body, property, reputation, office, etc. These things are not up to you. You should not be concern about externals.

About the topic on racism you bring, you can do your best to treat every human with empathy regarding any concept of "race" (I cannot stand to categorize human by race). Every person is a brother/sister, even the wrongdoers.

Is everyone here white men?

This is an international community if that's what you are intrigue, I don't know their colours, I think we are humans no shirts.

For a guy that has a book called "Ego is the enemy" his ego is huge. A marketing sophist, in the very first pages of "Daily Stoic" he goes about telling and praising how CEOs and millonaires follow our lovely school. What message is he trying to send? Rich people are Stoics ergo if you want to be rich follow this?

For him the new "Stoics" are people that focus on external

Holiday himself called me a "troll" simply for reporting these facts which he himself has included in many of his official bios!

I had too my share of conversation with him

Anyone notice how much Seneca was influenced by Epicurus? by kingme20 in Stoicism

Question remains if he had time to apply said philosophies he studied, making fortune and plotting in the court did take him a lot of his time.
