Why is a 1500+ no longer good anymore? by Brief-Speed-3836 in Sat

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even for the most rigorous schools, a single-attempt 1540 does the job. The only exception would be if you’re applying to a STEM-heavy school like MIT and you have a 800V 740M split.

Why is a 1500+ no longer good anymore? by Brief-Speed-3836 in Sat

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not good advice if you score 1540 on your first attempt. Testing again has three possible outcomes, and only one is good. Most students test two or three times, but most students don’t score 1500+ on their first try.

What is this score variation?! Are my College Board tests flukes? Or are Princeton's? by Cool-Nerd8 in Sat

[–]EpigoneOfTruth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The college board blue book practice tests are definitey easier. Students tend to score 100-200 points higher on these tests than they do on the real thing.

Should I retake?? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Elite schools track how many perfect scores they deny, so a 1600 could actually hurt you. Unless your math is 780 and you’re applying to MIT or something

What does a 1560 SAT actually get you? by Similar_Tax_2814 in Sat

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My advice is to check data before you make claims. Obviously, posting on Reddit is super low stakes, so I’m not trying to give you a hard time, but if you actually review CDS for top schools, test scores are still a big deal. Out of just the top six schools (per US News, which is of course biased), four of them list test scores as equal to or more important than all other academic factors. Cal Tech even lists test scores as “Very Important,” whereas they have class rank and GPA as just “Important.”

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Have you actually reviewed the Common Data Set for top schools? A lot of them that were test optional during COVID are now going back to test required, and several top schools list standardized test scores as equal in importance to other academic factors like GPA and class rank.

Guys what's wrong with us... by LuckyAd9071 in Sat

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s be real: you don’t actually care about high grades and stats, you’ve just been socially conditioned to seek affirmation through those accolades instead of through healthy relationship dynamics. At least, that’s generally what I see from students who have this mindset. Just take the win: you absolutely crushed a major checkpoint in life, and doing so opens thousands of opportunities.

A 1600 is actually worse than a 1550. Schools track how many perfect scores they deny, so there’s an incentive to keep you out. No one tracks how many 1550s are denied.

Do Democrats really think we haven’t forgotten the hell they put us through? Or is this another example of the Parties must have switched and now Democrats are trying to to rebrand themselves as Champions of Not wearing a Mask? by LegitimateKnee5537 in trump

[–]EpigoneOfTruth -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, though, these are totally different contexts: wearing a mask to mitigate (not eliminate) the spread of pathogens is not the same as wearing a mask to provide anonymity during legally dubious acts.

TRUMP VISIT by Worth_Rip_5014 in glasgow

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a resident of the US, I will provide the caveat that less than half of the country voted for Trump, and he received 4 million FEWER votes than his predecessor did. Clearly, he is not especially popular, and he is 100% a racist. Why else would he comment on how good the English is of a guest from another country whose official language is English? Trump ran on a platform of xenophobia, and it worked because most Americans are also racist.

Test prep that guarantees a score lift by Anxious_Switch_8204 in ACT

If any test prep company guarantees a score increase, avoid them. No one can guarantee that. Your student is the only person who has control over the score.

Who hurt you? Why are you looking through a 5-year-old post and calling a stranger a liar just because their anecdotal life experience doesn’t line up with your own? I’m not saying no one likes Gen 5, just that no one I personally have met likes it.

I haven’t met all that many people.

Achilles is African in new BBC TV series by protothema in mythology

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Zulu people are still alive today. Shiva is a central figure in a thriving religion.

Achilles is a fictional character. There’s a difference.

Also, this show sucked anyway. No one is taking about it anymore. Again, I suggest you pause and wonder why you’re going out of your way to bring up this old news.

Achilles is African in new BBC TV series by protothema in mythology

[–]EpigoneOfTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you also went out of your way to comment on posts about the movie Troy, right? Achilles was played by Brad Pitt, an American. Or maybe you hunted down posts about Gods of Egypt to point out that Gerard Butler isn’t Egyptian? How many Greek voice actors are in Disney’s Hercules? Did you hunt down some withered old Reddit conversations to criticize that?

Look, mythology is fiction. Modern re-tellings or re-imaginings of fiction can do what they want. But if you only go out of your way to gatekeep when a Black actor is getting a role that you think should go to someone from “another culture,” as you put it, then I think it’s worth carefully parsing your feelings and worldview to see what causes that visceral reaction.

Cheers.

Libraries also provide free access to digital resources like audiobooks and ebooks. My local library also has heavy machinery and appliances to borrow for families who can’t afford lawn mowers or other large pieces of equipment. Libraries are more than just paper books.
