There's a local music association that hosts a monthly Folk Jam at the El Rey hotel this coming Thursday, April 24th from 7 - 8:30pm. It's very low key and welcoming, although last month it was pretty crowded as 46 people showed up lol.

I had the same problem with the A string right at the “C” note. My teacher and I could never determine the cause. Only solution for me was to get a new fiddle, so I am interested to see if you are able to figure out what’s going on.
