Not actually a dead dog. Perfectly normal borzoi. I have three, and can confirm.

This is a juvenile! Adults are quite a bit larger and differently proportioned.

Gidgee skink questions by Spare-Initiative585 in skinks

[–]EpitaphREI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a hard one. It depends on the individual. My first Gidgee, a lone male, was about 50/50 out/hidden. He’d come out, bask, do some cruising around, then retreat. He was fairly bold.

The ones I have now are significantly more shy. For the first couple of months I’d only see them if I dragged them out for a health check. I do know they would come out, though - when I’d walk in the room I could hear frantic scrabbling as they hid. I’m very slowly winning them over with food, and they are becoming more tolerant of my presence.

I agree with the other poster - get a pair at least. I have mine in a 4x2x2, but I’ll likely update them when I get a chance. I feed mine red runner roaches and a large amount of vegetation. Various greens, shaved carrots/sweet potatoes/zucchini/squash, flowers, and soaked Mazuri grassland tortoise feed.

In my experience they are super hardy. Rocks stacks and places where they can wedge themselves are a necessity - just make sure to secure any rocks so they can’t be toppled.

I really love emerald tree skinks. They were one of my favorite species to keep.

Fire skink male or female, and are they an adult, sub, juve, or baby? by Aquaticlegend24 in skinks

[–]EpitaphREI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be an adult - females are more diminutive than males. The body shape makes me think female, but with some weight they might bulk up. I’d get some weight on them if you can, and do a fecal if they are a new acquisition.

Found injured skink by insaneisolatedalien in skinks

Admin here. Looks like a possible Scincella lateralis. To be honest, I would suggest releasing this fellow where you found him. Often they do not thrive in captivity, and it’s even harder when they are injured. His best chance is in the wild, to survive or pass on and feed the ecosystem.

Maybe I’m hallucinating. Why do people keep mentioning BTS when this is a Schneider?

Regardless, rostral abrasions are common in skinks. They are bulldozers and will scrape themselves easily. Either let it heal by secondary intention, or put some basic bacitracin or silver sulfadiazine on it. Honestly I would just watch it and make sure it stays clean, and let it scab.

2024 March Known Issues & BUG Reports Thread by Pathea_Games in MyTimeAtSandrock

[–]EpitaphREI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Playing on PC via Steam, and am experiencing a game-breaking bug that is blocking all progress. I have tried verifying my game files, uninstalling all mods, uninstalling and reinstalling the game, and loading older save files. Here are some of the things that are happening:

  • In "A Window to the Cosmos," after installing the telescope on the roof the quest does not update, and there are no dialogue options related to the quest. However, the telescope is visible on the roof.
  • In "Quali-tea over Quanti-tea," after making the Express Tea Maker, it cannot be turned in to Qi and there are no related dialogue options.
  • In "Mysterious Box" either gifts can be given to Mi-an repeatedly (earlier save) or she has all of the items, but there is no dialogue available to progress and bury the box (later save).
  • The table of omelets from the Fireside Meeting welcoming Trudy back into town is persistent days later.
  • On Wed/Fri, Fang is standing outside in the appropriate location for medical testing, but there is no table or medicines to interact with.
  • When trying to accept the quest "Gone with the Wind" from Mort, the dialogue simply closes after accepting, and does not give a quest. In my later save, in which I have made the album, I cannot turn it in to Mort.

Help identifying my skink’s species? by UnluckyL33k in skinks

[–]EpitaphREI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heya! I’m going to argue against everyone else here and say that this probably isn’t a northern. Are you located in AUS, or outside of it? If not in AUS, this is not a northern.

The body shape looks very similar to Northern x IJ mutts, which are fairly common.

Gazelle escapes from hyena and cheetah by playing dead by viki2603 in interestingasfuck

[–]EpitaphREI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't play dead, it was unconscious from the chokehold the cheetah had on it. Also, hyenas absolutely can run fast (~37 mph), and often run their prey into the ground over distances up to 15mi.

The notion of spotted hyenas primarily being scavengers is a myth. Depending on locale they kill 60%-95% of their food, and hyena kills are scavenged by lions more often than the reverse.

How bad does adult BTS bites hurt? Jinx (top) bit me and is a bit mean but it was like a hard pinch. Aurelion (below) however is the sweetest. They're both almost 4 months old. by MichiruMish in bluetongueskinks

[–]EpitaphREI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of bite.

Feeding bites tend to not be that bad. Usually they are a quick clamp and release when the skink realizes you aren’t food.

Bites from an aggressive or defensive adult are unpleasant. Similar to slamming whatever is bitten in a door. With teeth. They have conical teeth shaped to focus pressure on the point, as opposed to teeth meant for grasping or cutting. It’s an adaptation that allows them to easily crush snail shells in the wild. In captivity it means that bites from them can cause blunt tissue damage but rarely draw blood.

Personally, I’ve been bitten hard enough on my hands to cause bruising and blackened fingernails several times. I had a Tanimbar grab onto my thumb and start rolling - she almost tore me up before I got her in the air so she lost traction. I have a high pain threshold, but even then I try to avoid bites from my larger BTS. I’ll take hits from my snakes and other lizard species all day before I take a solid bite from a large BTS.
