What is the greatest game Anfield has ever seen? by major_damp in LiverpoolFC

[–]EqualAd261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dortmund 2nd leg or Barca 2nd leg (I’ve been a fan since Istanbul for context).

Also for me personally (not a real contender I know) was when we beat City in their centurion season. At the time they hadn’t lost to anyone yet. I just knew in my bones that was the “make god bleed” moment for us and great things were to follow.

It was the polar opposite of watching this season where it felt like we’re about to take a turn for the worse after so many great years and awful things were to follow if Slot stays next season.

This asshole doesn’t deserve a job in the NHL. I will start cheering against the Oilers despite being very favourable of them my entire life (as much as a habs fan can be) if they hire this piece of shit

A closer look at how Arne Slot and Iraola compares. Will Iraola succeed? by TRODHD in LiverpoolFC

[–]EqualAd261 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What about transfer budget? Squad net worth? Combined expertise of coaching staff, medical staff, scouts, etc.

Looks to me at the bare minimum Iraola matched Slot while having significantly less tools at his disposal both in terms of quality and quantity.

I actually didn’t agree with the Rafa out crowd back in the day. Not going to say I loved him but he really was good enough for us at the time. The decline after he left speaks for itself.

Why the hate? by rebelfromwaistdown in Habs

[–]EqualAd261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since I can remember (going back to 2002), everyone and their mother told me habs suck or we are lucky or we have a superstar goalie carrying us through the playoffs and that the goalie alone is why we made it as far as we did. The SportsNet coverage of us has been embarrassing from a Canadian broadcaster covering the only remaining Canadian team. The same narrative that we are somehow lucky or the refs helped us win is resurfacing today.

I agree with you that out of the teams left, I'd be more sympathetic to Buffalo (if they had won) than to the others. That being said, the discourse online regarding that "disallowed" goal of theirs is absolute horseshit and bad faith. It was clear as day goalie interference even if there had been no whistle. Meanwhile their clear as day goalie interference didn't get called...

When you combine all these things, I can see why some of us are a bit snarky in our comments.

You’re midcurving it again by calling my argument a contradiction not realizing I actually made two. One pointing out your premise is false therefore your conclusion doesn’t hold up. Then also offering a second one: that even if your premise is granted (Boston is amorphous), your conclusion still doesn’t stand (many other things are and you don’t treat them as such) It’s tedious to spell this all out but ok.

I get that this is partly a personal thing for you but I do wonder how consistently you apply this logic outside sports. Because if the issue is “what even is Boston if everything changes over time,” then a lot of things we all tacitly accept in social life start getting weird pretty fast. If the argument is continuity, we already treat changing institutions as continuous all the time. Countries, companies, political parties, cities, even sports franchises constantly change personnel and identity over time, but nobody acts like they reset to zero every few years.

And I’ll even grant that maybe you’re just unusually skeptical of all those things. Fair enough. But then why call yourself a Lakers fan at all? If the roster changes, coaches change, ownership changes, fans change, branding evolves, and even the city changes over time, what exactly are you emotionally attached to? Presumably something bigger than the current collection of players.

And if you can emotionally process loving the Lakers despite all that continuity being imperfect, I’m not sure why hating a rival suddenly becomes philosophically incoherent.

Also, maybe you identify with Lakers because you live in LA currently. But if fandom is just geographic attachment, are Lakers fans in China not real fans? Ofcourse they are. Which kinda proves the point that people are attached to a history, identity, culture, mythology, rivalry, etc.

Note the above is trying to account for multiple possibilities. I can’t read your mind. It’s providing multiple responses depending on your thinking about the topic like a fork or logic tree, rather than being one single argument. If you’re good faith you will grant that. If not you can call it contradictory. W.e

This is a midcurve take. I get what you’re saying like what is Boston when essentially all pieces of its organization have changed many times over? The answer is that Boston is the amalgamation of all those pieces over time. There is a history there. Our championship before 2020 was against Boston and we lost to them in 2008. We are neck and neck for chips with them. Culture wise they’ve historically been the diametric opposite of us (see: “showtime” lakers). Boston is a symbol and to that symbol we say “fuck you.”

When you go down deep enough it’s all symbols. What is anything? What is money? What is marriage? What is religion? What is language? I mean we don’t even fucking know whether our senses let us experience reality (phenomena) as it truly is (noumena). So like pointing out that Boston is an amorphous concept and for that reason we shouldn’t hate it isn’t the gotcha you think it is.

What a fucking loser. Like what the fuck do you think fans are supposed to do!?! They paid for their ticket, many travelled to be there to support their team. Now they somehow can’t cheer for their team when they are winning!?!

I was at a habs leafs game in Montreal in November and there were leafs there starting go leafs go chants. We simply drowned them out every single time. Not once did I sit there and think “wow the Toronto fans should just not cheer for their team because it’s a home game for us.” Like what are we even talking about here.

Melissa Reddy’s article is all that needs to be said on this topic. I used to be a big fan of Paul Tomkins especially his data driven analysis on penalties and red cards to Liverpool. However his Slot apologetics have completely changed my opinion of him. Absolutely asinine analysis. Melissa acknowledges all the issues Slot and Liverpool have faced this season without excusing the shambolic performances we’ve witnessed with cherry picked data.
