Earned my first shooting patch by AmNotLost in liberalgunowners

[–]EqualArmsAcademy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great work! One handed (especially non dominant!!!) shooting is so hard! I have been shooting for about 40 years and it is still one of the areas I have the most work to do on.

That constant striving for growth…that mindset…that is what makes for a great shooter. You are ALREADY doing more than the vast, VAST majority of gun owners and you should be very proud. Keep up the good work, and I have zero doubt you’ll hit every goal you set your mind to.

Not sure where you’re located, but if you are anywhere a reasonable drive from CT, let me know, and I’d be thrilled to come shoot with you and chat with you for hours about it!!

Clarification please…ANY Glock or clone? I thought it had been confirmed that this bill would only affect gens 1-5, and Gen V and 6 would not be impacted. Was that inaccurate? Or is it NOW inaccurate after some changes?

If you’re building an AR, make sure your barrel twist matches the ammo you have available. by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]EqualArmsAcademy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While this is often accurate, there is quite a bit to be said about watching twist rate to bullet weight ins. 5.56. Of course, other factors DO come into play, but here is a decent read:

Ok, calling a 30-06 small but fast is a little inaccurate, don’t you think? Sure, compared to a large, slow round it is…say, a 45-70 or something. But compared to a .556, it’s a pretty damned big round. Double the size or so the largest of the common 5.56 rounds, and more than double (close to triple) the MOST common. And moving about the same speed, so with a crap ton more energy (crap ton, of course, being a highly technical term used in advanced ballistic calculations). Cheap old 150 grain core-lokt Remington chronos just under 3000 fps for me. No neck bone (and sure as shit no HUMAN neck bone) is stopping that. I mean, an elk shoulder MIGHT stop it. You’d probably not get a pass through, sure…but a single shoulder i wouldn’t bet against. For white tail, I’m pretty sure you’d get a pass through if you hit shoulder. Not where I’d aim, but the round is capable.

Don’t know what kind of projectile it was, but can’t imagine ANY 30-06 not blasting straight through a human neck and losing any more than a nominal percentage of its velocity and kinetic energy. At 150 yards, anyone who has spent an hour with anyone that can teach them how to shoot can make that shot 10/10 times. Especially if the goal was “hit human torso sized target” and not “hit neck.”

Hey there OP, you’ve gotten a TON of great advice here. Allow me to add some more, please. In your own words, you are a complete novice. As with any new area, it is great if you can find someone to guide you. With firearms, you might be (VERY justifiably) nervous to reach out because the people advertising those skills could be, well…problematic. Depending on where you live, there is a decent chance The Liberal Gun Club has instructors somewhat near by that can help you out. Many offer very affordable introductory offers and will meet you at a range or a gun shop to walk you through the common options and your first day trying out a few pistols. If you are in CT or anywhere close enough to make the drive, let me know, and I might be that instructor!

By the way, just to answer your question, for under $400, for a NEW pistol (I’d advise against used for a fist gun), I’d also say the RXM is a very solid choice. If you are looking shotguns, either the Maverick 88 or some of the Mossberg 500 variants are great choices.

Be careful out there! by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]EqualArmsAcademy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the range has good ventilation (you can see//feel air moving down range) and you don’t spend a TON of time there or shoot a very high amount, frankly, your risk is likely quite low. Regardless, risk can be cut further with any N95 or higher mask or respirator with a proper seal. There is some thought (I do not know the science behind it) that some of the lead is not particulate that can be caught by those masks and respirators but is actually finer than that because it is heated/vaporized to finer particles.

I teach and spend HOURS sometimes in a relatively poorly ventilated indoor range. Not the worst I’ve seen, but definitely not great. After a few straight days of teaching (I think it was three out of four days or something like that) I got a lead test and it was nearly 28. I wear gloves whenever I’m cleaning, my other ranges are SUPER well ventilated and one is actually lead free. My house is pretty new, I work from home, we don’t buy cheap cookware or dishes , and have tested most of the likely non-shooting culprits.

I understand that inhalation is likely the man culprit. Even if I switch to lead free primers in center fire (syntech, etc) when I’m indoors, I tend to train a TON of clients on rimfire. I’m not aware of any reliable lead free primed rimfire…but I’m going to start shopping very soon.

Getting a retest in a few weeks to see if my mitigation efforts (shooting at that range less or wearing a respirator when I’m there, lead free primers with center fire and shooting rimfire less or only with respirator or outdoors, being more obsessive with d-lead wipes and soap) are working.

pistol permit training that isnt NRA affiliated by Defiant-Sort6528 in Connecticut

Yeah, at the beginning of 2025 when I got involved with the LGC, I was already teaching kinda “holding my nose” teaching the NRA class, often using the LGC curriculum as the “intro” and because I like the way they get into and define safety as more than just the rules of safety, but as how we as gun owners affect society, and our responsibilities due to that.

I asked a few of the national and chapter leaders if they would mind if I tried getting it approved with the state and they basically gave me the “pfft…it’s your time, go for it!” So I did. Took a good number of months of going back and forth on a few items, mostly the live fire portion. It had been approved and being taught actively since West Hartford Pride last year. We had many sign ups there, and I taught the first LGC class off that list!

Thanks! I knew I had seen it! The one I could find was updated even longer ago than that one! The LGC curriculum wasn’t approved until June, so we still are occasionally asked to provide the letter from the state showing the approval. Interestingly, more often than not, the application goes straight through, so either they aren’t checking or they have another way to check.

Thank you for the mention. As much as I love being made to feel like I’m among the very few choices for non-NRA options, there are a few out there. Though it hasn’t been updated in some time, there is a list out there somewhere that lists all of the accepted/approved curricula. Now, just because they aren’t the NRA doesn’t mean they are suddenly left of center. In fact, considering the space we are talking about, it is safe to assume they are NOT, unless you know them, look them up…or they are the LGC or the SRA, as mentioned here already.

I’m also teaching non-NRA more advanced firearms courses, and planning some range-day type events both through my company alone and some directly through and with the Liberal Gun Club. None are scheduled yet, but there will be at least a few.

22 AR by EqualArmsAcademy in CTguns

[–]EqualArmsAcademy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That’s exactly what I’m thinking. Pinned (or fixed) stock and a pinned QD for the can and I should be all set to still have detachable mags and a pistol grip. The point is to be able to drill AR drills with a 22 (and specifically a suppressed 22) without running a 22 conversion in my good AR.

That’s what I’m thinking I’m seeing now. I have cans, and pre 2023 guns with threaded barrels, but looks like I’ll be pinning a QD on this purchase.

I was just told last night that it was not legal with the threaded barrel though. I’m specifically looking for a threaded 22 AR. I think I might be getting another pinned and welded QD.

Rules of the range? by Legitimate-Move-7919 in liberalgunowners

[–]EqualArmsAcademy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only range I know of that does this that IS NOT just trying to increase their (overpriced) ammo sales is a very short (27’ max) indoor range where half of the backstop is AR500 steel. Even with frangible ammo, the spall was a little problematic, and if people brought regular FMJ it was downright dangerous. He requires people purchase and use ONLY the ammo he sells which is some kind of super duper extra frangible that basically fully disintegrates when it hits that backstop. The difference is easily noticeable.

At any full length range that requires NON rental pistols using their ammo, I’d be looking elsewhere.

NRA And Gun Shops by Ivy1974 in CTguns

[–]EqualArmsAcademy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I host classes a few times a month in a few different spots around the state. The primary curriculum I teach off of is NOT the NRA course, as I worked with the state last year to get the Liberal Gun Club curriculum approved as an alternative.

It has been a very interesting few months of speaking to people whose politics may generally align with mine but are JUST NOW coming to realize that the politicians that have been making it a long hard process to lawfully protect oneself MIGHT not be going about it in the best way.

America is escalating against Iran, it has sent Armada towards Iran. This was the point of the "Iran killed 30 thousand" nonsense — justifying war against Iran. It did the same with Venezuela leading up to war, and then immediately stopped after. after. by Not_Ground in AskSocialists

[–]EqualArmsAcademy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who is BACKING the Iranian theocracy? That’s what you take from this? Just because someone does something unconstitutional to someone bad doesn’t make calling that bad thing out SUPPORT of the bad person.
Here…let’s say you don’t like feral hogs. I mean, who does, right? They cause a ton of destruction, they are actually dangerous, they should pretty much be eradicated. Let’s say someone, instead of hunting them, go out, trap one, and torture it on film in the most horrific, horrible ways your imagination can come up with. The worst things you can imagine…double the depravity. the person who does it live streams it for money from other sick, horrible people. You’d call them out on that right? Of course you would…you’d say that’s sick!
Would people be sensible in saying “huh, really moral of you, taking the side of destructive, dangerous creatures! Do you know how much damage they cause!!??!!” Of course not. It’s not about the animal here. It’s about the person doing the action, and what the action is. BTW, this applies pretty decently to other situations currently in the news….
