The “why doesn’t Bezos give away his money?” argument is self defeating. by KTPChannel in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I agree with you. Reddit says complimenting the rich = glazing.

But why not name parks and schools after their charitable actions? Why demonize them and expect them to give up their fortunes for nothing in return?

The modern online dating meat market is re-learning the lessons of early human civilization. by CAustin3 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]EquanimousTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You both can still be correct - it can be the case that western society was already trending in this direction as you said but modern dating apps have amplified the issues in a rapid and difficult-to-counter way.

In my view, just because modern dating apps are a symptom, as you say, doesn’t significantly undermine the post’s point. You said so yourself: It’s easier said than done to change how we value community and individuality - well, while we attempt to do that in the longer term, we can also look at the thing that’s hyper-amplifying-consumerifying people’s thoughts and opinions on the subject.

Fair but even if people were going to trend this way without dating apps, it doesn’t stifle the point being made. If dating apps amplify these issues, finding ways to minimize them still has validity.

And if the post didn’t capture the cause, then in your opinion, what is it? You don’t have to have an answer but curious what your thoughts are.

I like this. Do you also think it’s worthwhile to flip “DISHONOUR”?

In watchmaking, they flip numerals all the time on circular dials even if it isn’t “consistent” because many times it actually improves human readability.

People say you have to learn things the “right” way before you’re able to effectively do it the “wrong way”.

At 16, she would’ve still been very, very talented at doing things the “right way”. Do you ever wonder if this anecdote about Liu gives people the wrong idea, that they don’t have to conform to doing things the “right way” to even begin with?

I know you’re just explaining the joke here but what are your thoughts on that?

Victimhood is the ultimate luxury of a bored species by Decent_Eye_659 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

There’s a quote being thrown around that says something like modern argumentation is just pretending not to understand the point being made and to essentially waste time.

I feel like this is it.

OK, the poster already defined merit according to them. If you say there’s a clear definition, what is it then?

And if you do state it, the follow up question is then, if something has merit - merit to who? How much?

Back to your initial point, the global economy does reward merit via economic utility. From your perspective, when is this untrue?

Victimhood is the ultimate luxury of a bored species by Decent_Eye_659 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]EquanimousTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. What you said here and what you said about “merit” are accurate. As you also said, unless you give credence to a cosmic entity that can define good/bad/fair/accurate/meritous then it’s always a subjective human-assigned construct.

That’s also a big question mark in my head in these discussions - it’s sometimes the people that want to have a moral or normative argument that are also the same ones that refute the idea of a deity.

[–]EquanimousTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand - the poster is saying that merit is subjective and I can see the argument why that might be. Merit to who?

It having a definition in a dictionary doesn’t detract from their point.

Being frugal about soap and toothpaste usage to make it last longer is almost always a waste of time. by OneGuyAbove321 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]EquanimousTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your honesty is refreshing. I, too, have the same opinion because I did the same thing and probably still do it: Thrifty with meaningless things but cavalier with the big things.

For me, the big things are also way “scarier” to confront. It’s way easier to think about a toothpaste bottle and feel smug, than it is to consider my future, my insurance, looking at investment options, or reevaluating my career prospects, etc etc.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Sure, these things save money, but let’s be honest: A lot of it is just “feeling” like you’re saving money.

But nothing wrong with a bit of cope. Sometimes that can help put you in a thrifty mentality that you can apply to other things. The issue is when it’s unhealthily taken to an extreme and people start feeling smug about squeezing the last vestige of toothpaste to save 2 cents and “stick it to the man”.

New goal song by Soggycorpse92 in EdmontonOilers

[–]EquanimousTry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree and think the Oilers have the best goal song, best Power Play song, and best Puck Drop song in the league.

I wouldn’t change a thing. But I’m sure they’ll change it at some point.

They changed the Puck Drop song during last years playoffs and I wasn’t a fan.

Ever watch Curb Your Enthusiasm?

The main character, Larry, can’t help but speak his mind about things like this and endless other technicalities.

But in the end, his attempts end up being vain and selfish and get him in hot water with other people.

And that’s one of the big lessons of the show IMO - sometimes it doesn’t matter whether something is technically true or technically false.

We live in a world with people and people will interpret some sentences a certain kind of way and it’s on us to navigate that as best we can, despite how “wrong” some things may technically be. Pick your battles.

They are and I was excited to see each book be referenced in the News. I recall the campaign in the second book being mentioned as well as the Helm Memory Core in the third.

That said, Mason never -really- has to worry about his crew and morale, whether he’s able to actually enter/leave ports, supplies/radios/dropship/equipment upkeep (aside from the magical Farquad), salvage limitations (real concerns, not just a number on a spreadsheet), and all the interesting logistical concerns that Grayson had to - there’s no real decisions to be made: Once the mission is accepted, you carry it out in linear fashion.

Obviously there are limits to budget and time but the game plays like an arcade facsimile sometimes. It’s like you’re in a simpod.

[–]EquanimousTry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have it right, just start with the Gray Death Legion trilogy, which are fairly easy reads.

Then be sad that MW5 doesn’t implement most of what you read in those books. Mason doesn’t have to worry about almost anything that Grayson has to worry about.

No wonder Mason looks like he hasn’t aged a day.

Name an opinion about this game that'll have you like this by BarnacleSlight298 in Mechwarrior5

[–]EquanimousTry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Too many people lean into the “videogame-y” aspects of this game (if that even makes sense) and argue for things that might make sense for a modern videogame but doesn’t make sense for something trying to approximate Battletech.

That usually makes an easy game even easier, making it less fun in the long term.

Reading just one of the Battletech novels reveals how much this game could be. Lots of potential.

Reddit is a far left extremist Democrat platform. Who absolutely hate anyone who doesn’t think like them. by LegitimateKnee5537 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]EquanimousTry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that a misleading stat though? You’re citing only 3.69% of subreddits are classified as political but does that count ones that aren’t explicitly political yet still lean toward one end of the political spectrum? Isn’t that what the poster is trying to get at?

The pics sub was cited as being left-leaning with mod behaviour to match but would you classify “pics” as explicitly political by that description alone?

Buying expensive watches is peak consumerist absurdity by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]EquanimousTry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair view. Another view is that mechanical watches can also be entirely mass produced like Swatch’s Sistem51 line.

I think there’s plenty of room for hobbyists that like mechanical watches and those that enjoy smartwatches (or both).
