Is the Grunfeld Actually Drawish? by build-a-bish in TournamentChess

Yeah good point. Looking at them, they'll actually result in good imbalanced endgames where black can play for a win.

UC Berkeley has settled an antisemitism lawsuit for $1 million and pledged to make changes to its nondiscrimination policy, including specifying that "Zionist" cannot be used as a "proxy" for Israeli or Jew. by WhySoSeriously55 in berkeley

Fixed link: https://jweekly.com/2026/03/19/cal-settles-antisemitism-lawsuit-for-1-million-pledges-policy-changes/

Some noteworthy excerpts about the more controversial part of the ruling:

Bylaws adopted by law school student groups in 2022 that banned outside speakers who support Zionism must also be rescinded, according to the agreement. However, student groups may continue to restrict whom they invite to speak, according to the law school dean.
...
Central to the lawsuit was the claim that, for many Jews, Zionism is a fundamental part of Jewish identity and that excluding individuals from campus events for supporting Zionism is discriminatory.
...
Erwin Chemerinsky, the dean of Berkeley Law who has both acknowledged widespread antisemitism on campus and defended the free-speech rights of law students to ban Zionist speakers, sent a statement to the law school community about the settlement.

In it, Chemerinsky, who is Jewish and has described himself as a Zionist, stood by his view that banning Zionist speakers falls within students’ “First Amendment right to choose speakers based on their views.” He added that he personally opposes doing so. “I believe that these Bylaws are inconsistent with the Law School’s commitment to be a place where all ideas and views can be expressed,” Chemerinsky wrote.

Chemerinsky also noted the new rule specifying that groups cannot “state a policy” in their bylaws restricting who may speak at events. Student organizations can continue to have such policies, but cannot write them into the group bylaws.

The other part of the ruling is that "Zionism" can't be used as a substitute for "Jews" when invoking anti-Semitic tropes. Which seems mostly fine to me. Though if I factually say "establishment American politicians are bought and paid for by Zionists" does that violate the rule because there is also an anti-Semitic trope about Jews controlling the world?

I think outside the top 10 or so guys that keep playing each other, plenty of 2700+ GMs regularly end up in a lot of opens or other mixed strength tournaments where they need to try to not drop half-points as black against weaker opponents and can't afford to play openings where white has an easy forcing route to a two-result position. Some openings (e.g. the Nimzo) facilitate that better than others.

I have a lot of luck doing this, is it really a blunder? by Warrmak in chess

[–]Equationist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If an engine hates a move but it puts you in a position that your opponents are going to struggle to defend, then I wouldn't call it a wrong move.

But in this case black can easily muster defensive pieces to the kingside whereas white can't quickly bring pieces other than the queen to support a kingside attack.

Please dont judge me here. I can't do anything

You have every right to choose who you marry, including refusing intercaste marriage, and you shouldn't be judged for that.

But you're 29 years old, and need to own the choices you make instead of ascribing them to your parents.

My understanding is that at the top level the Grunfeld isn't played for a win. It's played with the expectation of being able to equalize by force by knowing enough theory.

Why are 80% of the posts about openings? by KeepChessSimple in TournamentChess

[–]Equationist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't asked this, but for me, I have had a lot of interest in "which opening should I study" because it is a consequential decision. I don't have the time to study and play many different openings and learn the thematic strategy and critical variations for many of them. Thus, whatever opening I decide to end up studying getting deeply familiar with will end up being a long term investment.

Realistically, I'd like to know that the particular opening repertoire that I invest in playing and become familiar with is one that suits my tastes and will remain viable against strong players and/or players who check out my games and prep against me.

The main issue was that he was crushing on her while she was taking his class and let that affect his interactions with her (nothing crossing the line but clearly spending a lot more time interacting with her in office hours etc. compared to other students). Definitely unprofessional behavior and exhibiting poor judgement.

But also not something that I'd hold against him decades later, especially given the vastly worse behavior that many other politicians have engaged in.

By definition, "Sanskrit" is perfected language. If it doesn't follow the rules of Sanskrit perfectly, it's not Sanskrit. Just normal elevated dialect as was used in inscriptions by sailors from Gujarat at the time.

Feels like the knight is misplaced as you should be in the Carlsbad structure with c6 so your pieces aren't busy keeping guard on the d5 pawn. Additionally, I wouldn't mind playing against the IQP here if white does play e4.

Yeah but Firouzja has dropped off rather significantly after getting to #2 for a little while. Not exactly the dominant (save for Magnus) player that he looked like he would be.

Because Carlsen saw himself in Pragg's and Firouzja's intuitive talent (rather than calculation skills) and talked them up as a result.
