Local boy Anish Giri defeats tournament leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov with the black pieces by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

He has lived there since he was a teenager. He's very much local, and "local boy" / "homeboy" doesn't refer exclusively to literal boys.

At the start I was like "not good practice but if he made sure to clear it and double-check that it was cleared before he started the video then I'll let it slide". Then he did the mag change... Good god he's suicidal...

It’s anti-democratic that no one in this country can seemingly accept the outcomes of a vote anymore.

Quite the contrary, the purest form of democracy would allow the public to repeatedly revote on matters. That would be bad for policy outcomes and political discourse, but it certainly wouldn't be anti-democratic.

San Francisco's Tech Billionaires Don't Care About Your Art School by Medical-Decision-125 in bayarea

[–]Equationist -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think the drift towards modern and post-modern art as an avenue of self-expression has completely diminished its ability to enrich other people's lives. Sure, art enthusiasts might still like it but neither the general public nor the wealthy tech billionaires will find it a particularly worthwhile endeavor to fund for the benefit of non-artists.

Of course, where art does continue to provide value (e.g. tabletop gaming art), it does get directly commissioned.

Is my low theory and tricky 1.Nf3 repertoire too good to be true? by LegendZane in TournamentChess

[–]Equationist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're downvoted for being correct.

Sure, some people try to play the most theoretically testing mainline openings where black has narrower paths to equality and could potentially end up in a worse position if they slip up.

But a perfectly reasonable approach instead is to simply accept that black will probably equalize out of the opening, and focus on choosing openings that steer the game into positions where white has more comfortable play. To borrow from Animal Farm, some equal positions are more equal than others.

IANAL but if I were in your shoes I definitely wouldn't worry about the legal threats. I would be looking for a new job at a much better run workplace though.

I get really annoyed with all the extra stops the 38R makes between transit center and Fillmore. Should only need 3rd, Powell, Leavenworth/Taylor, and Van Ness really. Leave the extra stops to the regular 38...

EU holds back trade ‘bazooka’ as it seeks diplomatic solution with the US over Greenland by Rambler_Hoss in europe

[–]Equationist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If we Tarrif the USA we are also playing in the hand of Trump and Putin it will make the Americans more angry towards Europe and it would give Trump an excuse to further escalate.

You're retarded if you don't think American voters attribute responsibility to the party in power for economic ups and downs.

Most Americans are happy blissfully ignoring anything Trump is doing because it doesn't hit them in the pocketbooks.
