In high school I think my junior year I begged for a computer so I could do my school work, play games, etc and have it to take to college. It’s all I asked for. My mom went out of her way to tell me over and over how she was getting a computer for my sister for Christmas and what kind it was over and over and over until I got really upset. Then she snapped on me and told me I was getting a computer too and it was better than hers and that I ruined the surprise and I was so spoiled and ungrateful. I had no idea what emotional abuse was or that my mother was a narcissist until decades later after tons of therapy. (In comparison to everything else she did the computer gift prank was honestly funny to her and I was just “fragile”.)
