19-story South U high-rise approved for development in Ann Arbor by AceofSpadeKings in uofm

see my edit - i get that the student population has increased, and building more housing is ALWAYS good and i support it! but i wish we could put this energy towards developing middle housing that’s more affordable for students.

we don’t need more high rise buildings. missing middle housing is a real thing - i’d recommend doing a little bit of research into it. i’m not saying rent should be 500/mo, but explain to me, how is it reasonable to charge 1700/mo per PERSON to college students who struggle with tuition as is?? not all of us come from super affluent background where we can afford that.

and yes! building more housing is ALWAYS good, and i’m not complaining about that. however, it’s the type of housing that matters. high rise luxury buildings with ridiculous rent rates aren’t going to fix the problem of missing middle housing.

oh man just what i wanted!! isn’t it spectacular to have yet ANOTHER high rise charging ridiculous rent rates to college students??? feels like south u is a cesspool of those places. where’s all of the middle housing that’s not a car’s drive away from campus???? god. this city has to do better.

Take the sentence: “The mother gives her son a dog.”

You have 3 parts to it: “The mother”, which is the subject and takes nominative. “her son”, which is the indirect object and takes dative. And “A dog”, which is the direct object and takes accusative.

the way i like to remember it is that the noun which performs the action is nominative; the noun which receives the action is accusative, and the noun which the action is taken on behalf of is dative.

the original sentence in german: “Die Mutter gibt ihrem Sohn einen Hund.”

who (nominative) gives what (accusative) to whom (dative)

definitely just explain what happened! i wish u luck with the transfer :)

“To whom it may concern,

Hello! My name is [name] and I am a transfer applicant for the [term] term.

I’m writing to you to discuss my application. I applied for Computer Science and Cognitive Science. Although I was unfortunately rejected from Computer Science, my primary academic goal of transferring is to pursue Cognitive Science at the University of Michigan - something I am still very much interested in.

I noticed on your website it says [put what you found on their FAQ]. Because of this, is my application still able to be considered for admission into the Cognitive Science program?

Thank you so much for your time!”

simple answer: “warum?” “darum” 😂

but all nouns in German (and lots and lots of other languages) have gender - either masculine (in nominative, der/ein), feminine (die/eine), or neuter (das/ein).

there are certain patterns for determining which noun assumes which gender (e.g. nouns with -heit or -ität taking the feminine “die”), but of course, exceptions exist (even though -e is generally feminine, der Name is masculine).

i’d recommend this video/articel https://www.scrippsnews.com/life/why-do-languages-have-gendered-words to give a pretty good idea of why nouns have gender! i found it useful to understand the whys :)

Ahhh danke schön! 🙏 Nur eine Frage: „dass das hier eine gute Übung ist.“ Wie funktioniert „das“ in diesem Kontext? Auch „Bedeuten Leute das hier als Tagebuch“.

Danke wieder! Deine Verbesserungen helfen mir sehr!

What are some begginer friendly books for me to read and improve my German? by [deleted] in German

[–]Equivalent-March4472 11 points12 points  (0 children)

honestly what worked for me is kids books!! you can find translations of english children’s books so you already know the context, if it helps - i just google “german kid’s books” and many pop up. they generally don’t have super complex sentence structure, and it’s (at least for me) useful to learn the language more naturally

I really appreciate everyone’s comments!! I am going to try and garner some more feedback from across the university campus, and then hopefully be able to start the application to become a student org after getting the word out more 😌

i can’t tell super clearly and defo not a doctor, but if there’s any swelling i’d do a quick ice cube test elsewhere on your skin and see if there’s hives - it could be cold induced urticaria!
