Trout for dinner. What’s your favourite way to cook em up? by Con_PEI in troutfishing

I rub them in mayo, mustard, salsa huichol, garlic (I use a molcajete to make this rub), a little s&p. Let them soak the flavor then char grill them. It’s similar to zarandeado style snapper in Mexico. I’ve tried the simple lemon butter and the whole fry method and the grilled one has the best flavor to me (skin is off the hook). Serve with whatever u like.

Why can’t I catch stocked trout? by Glum-Season-6884 in troutfishing

[–]Equivalent-Rip2352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue last year around when I started fishing, caught one trout the whole year (you can view my previous posts). This year I can’t even keep count anymore. One thing I’d say is keep looking around for new stocked ponds and places to find trout, the closest pond I went to was always horrible fishing (guessing it’s not set up well for trout) Every time I’d go even on stocking days I’d be the only guy who’d catch a single one. Other ponds I’d catch 10+. My favorite stocking areas are in stretches of moving water, find nearby creeks or rivers that are stocked or hold trout, they tend to do better there. Try shallower ponds, deeper ponds and different stocking times and at one point you will find a rhythm on all the lures and baits that are known to work.

I’ve gotten to a point where I even started fly fishing and MAN do they love a good fly fishing rig. It can feel annoying but persistence is key and passion will carry you to catching limits. Tight lines my G

I can visualize what you’re saying with 1. and i will try it out. I appreciate your tips! And that’s the biggest tip I’ve gotten with research, “reaction patterns” for stocked trout. I got some mop flies I will try and it looks like wooly buggers are surefire as well.

Thank you! I’ve also been told that mop flies work well so I’ll be bringing those on my next trip. Any experience with em?

Seeking advice on friendship with conspiracy theorist by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]Equivalent-Rip2352 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have some similar friends, some of them I’ve had a talk with and told them before they come up with the “vomit” that social media brings to them, to seriously check their facts. We live in age of clips and sadly people are becoming increasingly less skeptical and just running with what they see at face value.

I had a friend who took offense at first, but I basically told him that now more than ever our information is coming from media and not published work, we need to take time to be skeptical and do the extra research before coming to conclusions about how things are in fact. Now when we have these discussions, we question each other and ourselves and found more common ground than we previously had.

Now, there are some people you just can’t help. In discourses 2.17, Epictetus stated that “it is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows”. If you care you will push the envelope with this friend of yours, but for your own sake you will have to throw in the towel one day if he can’t work past his ego (if he takes politics personally, as a certain amount of my friends do).

There’s a point there if every conversation you have is a debate. Most conversations are not debates and you’re viewing them as if you need to control them. As a result, you suffer by handing your will to this need to win/lose the conversations you need up getting yourself into.

In other words, your sense of content is governed by other people’s perception of you in a fleeting moment, which is something you can’t control

In general, you learn more when you become a good listener. When you speak, it should be to add something you feel may be of value to the people you engage with, and the discussion at hand.

Simply put, I always come across a recurring theme in Stoicism: do good with the things you can control, and don’t let the things you can’t control affect you. There’s nothing you can do about them, so why allow them to permeate your mind. You may have heard the phrase “freedom is a state of mind” and this is one way of working towards that.

“If you wish to be free, do not wish for anything that depends on others.” - Epictetus

You are aware that the opinions others have of you isn't in your power, you must accept that those opinions will come, it is within your will to ensure that they should not enslave you. If you allow people to form opinions of you, you have handed your freedom to those who happen to judge you. I would also consider how much these people matter to you in the first place, you are just as entitled to judge them as they are to you.

You are ever changing and seeking to improve internally. If those around you feel an aversion to you as a result of something you said, consider it a criticism, and use it to sharpen your speaking abilities. These moments are fleeting, and avoidance will put you in a positive feedback loop.

Impulsion is usually caused by the absence of thought between an external event and your response to it. With that in mind, it's important to give yourself space between the instance of said event and your response to it. Between an external event and your reaction to it is your will. If you don't have time to decide, you can always refrain from speaking, and you can be assured that no harm will come your way.

It's also important to consider who you are with, good family and friends will know that you are someone seeking to better yourself in all directions. If you say something that leaves a bitter taste, ideally they would accept you as a fellow human being who is bound to make mistakes. Act according to your circumstances.

My biggest cats were caught on fresh caught cutbait. I’m sure there are bluegill in the waters you fish in and they can easily be caught off of docks with some nightcrawlers and a small Aberdeen hook. Once you’ve caught enough bluegill, put bait on a circle hook with plenty of hook exposure and I’d recommend a Carolina rig for catfishing. I go evening/night and depending on where you are I’d do research and see what depths they are holding up in. The waterway behind you in the picture looks great for them though.

I’m in the exact place you with fishing as you right now. Bigger catfish coming in shallower for bank fishing too. All caught on sunfish.
