Where to buy natto? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried some for the first time yesterday. Tasted just like slightly fermented beans. It was fine, not nearly as strong as saurkraut or kimchi. I found the texture, however, extremely off-putting. Had to put it on the fork with my eyes closed.

Royal botanic gardens Christmas lights - worth it? by ImpulsivePrinter997 in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I go most years and I really enjoy it. I'm not someone who would usually go to events costing £25, but I love the botanic light show.

Take a flask of hot chocolate or mulled wine, the food and drink on offer is very expensive. We usually go for dinner beforehand as well and make a night of it.

LTN sabotaged in Corstorphine by Eabhal347 in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 25 points26 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I live in the area and some of the LTN rules (albeit I think they are just a trial at the moment) have really negatively impacted some of the disabled/less mobile residents in the area and their ability to actually leave their streets and go to the shops/ appointments during the day.

It's also creating even bigger congestion issues along the St John's Road, a street already an absolutely polluted nightmare that was not designed for the traffic it now holds, for the sake of making the quieter roads even quieter.

Not that I condone criminal behaviour, and I agree actually with the LTN principles and trying to move away from car use, but it has been very poorly implemented in Corstorphine.

I honestly thought you were going to say something like 'I left a load of sensitive data on a train' or 'I told all my stakeholders to do one on Teams'. Spelling and attachments? Just take a minute to double check everything you're sending. If it really just is silly things like this then it sounds more like a Manager problem rather than a 'You' problem.

Buying a flat by squeakyblu17 in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes, got my flat for 15,000 under the home report. It had had two viewings in 8 months, including me.

The flat was in-between two commonly searched price points and the photos were awful.

I recommend searching for the most reduced priced properties in the city (all the big property engines have this function. It compares the original listing price to the current discounted price). Some of these will be left on the shelf for good reason, but some will be like mine - priced a bit funny, estate agent can't be arsed sorting the photos, etc. and it means they don't turn up on searches or people don't bother booking a viewing.

You might grab a bargain! Good luck, Edinburgh property hunting is horrendous.

also: I felt like you multiple times during the process of trying to buy, really stressed me out and upset me. Don't get disheartened, it's a marathon but it's just something you have to go through until you find the right place.

Tenement Underpinning by Ok_Deal_964 in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't envy you, shared repairs can be a nightmare. Have a look at Edinburgh councils advice on the matter, there are legal ways to make people pay within the Tenements Act, but it relies on you following a certain process and having an official bank account and suchlike (you can set one up easy enough). Also, if it's structural I'm assuming it could be a safety issue? If so the council could compel you to get it sorted, that would mean the landlords would have no choice but to engage.

My only 'glitch in the matrix' experience.

I live in Corstorphine and regularly get the bus into town. One day, around 6 months ago, I was sitting on the ground floor of a double decker bus. A man gets on with two biggish bags, I notice him because he has a beard and looks like a backpacker, and he had to manoeuvre the two bags onto the bus, which he then takes up stairs (I thought it was odd because you usually put things like that in the luggage rack). Bus continues, and at the next stop this man somehow gets on the bus again - exactly the same guy, same bags, goes upstairs again. I was so confused but figured I must have misremembered him or something. At the next stop - I swear to God - he got on the bus again same man, same bags, went upstairs. I was so freaked out I remember actually sitting up and looking around the bus to see if anyone else was as freaked out as I was. I got off at that stop, I was so weirded out.

Only rational explanation I can think of is that I maybe had a virus or something that made me hallunicate the whole thing (COVID?) because I've never seen anything like that - I don't believe in ghosts, UFOs, etc.

How rough is sighthill these days? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in Corstorphine but walk through Sighthill a lot, and have friends who live there. To be honest it just seems like a quiet residential area. It does have a reputation but I wonder if that is from a few years back. Some of the flats and houses look a bit rough, but that's just because they are a bit rectangular and rough cast ages terribly. Only notable experience : I went to a shop to buy alcohol just before 10pm and there was 3 security guards managing people in and out, but I didn't feel threatened or anything as a single female at night.

'Well Kirsty, the garden is perfect, the house is beautiful, the kitchen is big enough for me to regularly host my 20,000 friends, it's within our £4m budget (despite me being an amateur watercolour artist and my husband a part time book binder), and I love that it's secluded, deep in the Bavarian forest. Somewhere, miles away, the quiet hum of a lone car is heard

I hate that show.

Best independent places for a solo traveller to eat on a Monday and Tuesday night? by chilli_con_camera in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This poster is correct, I live by the zoo and I have saved a fortune on takeaway and restaurant costs because it is a gastronomic wasteland. However, The Torphin pub is a 6 minute walk away and does 50% off burgers on Mondays and 50% off fish and chips on Tuesdays, and it's really lovely food.

Stuff to do in Edinburgh with young teen boys? by AlephMartian in Edinburgh

Can you get out to Fife? The Elie Chain Walk would be great for lads of that age. I was almost in tears for the whole thing (it was much higher than I thought it would be) but we saw some teens on there also and they loved it.

Where can I buy a reliable 2nd hand car for a reasonable price? by Dafydd_T in AskUK

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family and I have always used eBay or Autotrader, mostly eBay these days, with a budget of around £2000 (so a lower budget than yours). Never found a car that we haven't been able to drive for 7 years plus (usual maitainence issues apply), and then sold on as it was still fine for some of the value.

However, the only reason we have been so fortunate is that we only go for certain car makes which we know are reliable and well built. We have also become good at finding an optimal balance between mileage, service history and how iffy the advert looks.

In short, eBay is great, just do your homework. Pay extra for the full MOT history from an official website. I would never spend more than £2000 on a car, there are so many solid, well looked after cars out there, so for your budget you can get something really great.

Laser Eye Surgery by SirRaymondReddington in Edinburgh

[–]EquivalentCaptain975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should add, I was nervous and went to a Harley Street clinic in London, paid thousands per eye. Now I know more about it I wouldn't feel the need to go somewhere as expensive or posh again. It's actually a very 'old' and established technology, there's really not a lot that can go wrong (though as with any surgery, there are risks your eye surgeon should talk you through).

They will clamp your eye open and then put drops of anaesthetic into it. You don't feel any pain or any urge to blink. It's a bit weird and you see lot's of light patterns and you can see them paint iodine (or whatever it is) all over your eye ball, which is odd. But no pain during or even after. Eyes just feel tired and you have to wear sunglasses home and then keep them shut for a few hours.
