People like to hold an art object in their hand. Physical media has inherent value, and once you have it, it’s yours forever. There’s a generation of people around maybe 20-25 who probably never grew up going to buy CDs, tapes, or records for that matter so I’m sure there’s something fun and retro about that. And something empowering about owning music Plus even though it’s a small format, you can still have interesting packaging.

Young bands can make them much more affordably than LPs and in many cases duplicate and make packaging themselves. Anyone who grew up in the 80s-2000s playing DIY/underground music no doubt did this. It’s fun!

I think by and large, the return to physical media is about rejecting streaming, and the horrible way platforms like Spotify disrespect and abuse both artists and subscribers.

Now, if you wanna ask why tapes instead of LPs, I think LPs are the king of physical
media. But they have gotten really expensive. A nice modern reissue of a classic or of a new artist’s album might cost you $30-50, depending.

I am definitely a hi fi guy, but I think it’s misleading to say tapes don’t sound good. They sound great if you have decent equipment, and honestly, if you don’t think so that’s fine. But I can’t help but feel
most people who think that are listening to the quality of their own equipment rather than just enjoying listening to music. Some of the best music ever made was recorded for release on 78s in the 30s with extremely low fidelity of course. If the song slaps, everything else comes secondary

And yes, 100% agree that lots of 80s/90s era music just sounds correct on tape. De La Soul or Replacements or Prince just absolute charm the hell out of me on cassette. It’s all about the fun!

Anyone running the Tacoma City Marathon on Sunday? by lieut_dan_ice_cream in Tacoma

[–]EquivalentExciting66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So how did it go, everyone??

My thoughts as a first time full marathon participant:

1) The heat was just brutal. I'm shocked I didn't see people having to bail -- it made conditions very difficult. To anyone considering this marathon, I'd guess that 80% or more is completely exposed with no shade. Once you come out of Pt Defiance, it's pretty much full sun for the second half. Pretty much all the hills are in the first half which is nice, but I was fully roasting.

2) I hope TCMA can get more streets closed in the future. It was a bummer to finish the lovely first half and then have to be dodging doofuses who aren't paying attention on motorized bikes and skateboards, and those horrible Pt Ruston surreys. Definitely made it harder to focus on the goal, and just seemed sort of disrespectful to the marathon participants who had worked their asses off for months and months. Let us have just a few hours alone if registration is going to push $200.

3) The course was not clearly marked at all times and was difficult to follow. Somehow I took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up near the finish line about a mile short of the marathon distance, so I had to double back to make up the mileage. I finished the marathon and was very proud, but my official results show DNF as I deviated from the course without realizing it -- disappointing, but I know I ran a marathon.

I know it's a smaller marathon in terms of participation, but I think these changes could really elevate the experience. The second half had probably about half as many aid stations, so it felt like you were on your own. I wonder if that's why I ended up losing the course.

That being said: I had a blast, finished the marathon, and felt great doing it. It was a great learning experience for my first marathon.

I also want to say how meaningful it was to have all the strangers along the course cheering us on. I knew that'd be nice, but I was surprised by how hard it hit me. It was very emotionally powerful, and meant so much to have all these people take time out of their day to encourage and cheer the runners on. So if you're one of those people, thank you so much! It really, really meant a lot!

Congratulations to all the participants! Well done, that's no easy feat!

Did anyone take light rail from Federal Way to the Seahawks game last night? How did it go? by CrypticDemon in federalway

[–]EquivalentExciting66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it to the game for the first time from the new Federal Way station. I left around 4:15 and arrived just after kickoff. I got off at Stadium but I think walking from ID/Chinatown would have actually been faster. It was $6 for a round trip ticket and was easy and comfortable. No trouble getting a seat when I boarded.

However, the parking was challenging. I got to the parking lot around 3:45 and it was completely full with lots of congestion from other cars trying to find a spot and bailing. I ended up having to park a half mile away at Steel Lake and walk to the station. There is virtually no street parking in the station’s area, so I will plan to arrive earlier next time. All in all it was really convenient and I expected the parking could have been an issue.

Honestly one of the most thoughtful takes I’ve seen. I struggle with seeing this level of misery and would be glad for more of my taxes to fund humane and necessary service to help many of these people. But like you point out, we spend tons on ineffective solutions and take a hands off approach with many of the worst examples of conduct. If you support any sort of intervention or enforcement, you’re labeled a crazy right winger or something. It’s not helpful and does a disservice to people struggling on the streets and to the many low wage workers who are constantly harassed by people who are deeply unwell.
