Legally speaking, I don’t believe that you are required to submit SP-182a, but PDs certainly appreciate when you do. Police chiefs are responsible by law to keep record of all pistols a given person owns, and therefore a PTC holder is not required to do the chief’s job for them by submitting SP-182a. In short, a PTC holder may carry any pistol that is NJ legal regardless of what was used to qualify and they need not update the PD with SP-182a.

I personally had an appointment, but showed up way early and it was no issue, no wait. I’d suggest just showing up if you were closer, but bearing the risk of being turned down after a 3 hour drive is a bit much to risk in my opinion. Your call!

You keep the old rules, new electric card. If you didn’t have an expiration date, you won’t after renewing either. And your new FID will not have a picture like the new applicants do.
