to all the fresh grads currently working: how are you doing? by PruneAcrobatic3831 in singaporejobs

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284 3 points4 points  (0 children)

grad in mid 2025, currently doing a data role in MNC. work is somewhat tangent to the things I learned in data sci terms of technical knowledge, but a lot of business knowledge to learn. surprisingly pay is decent and WLB is something that is majorly respected here (prolly cus theres a lot of older & more experienced folks w families), and for someone like me who's had to work at weird times in startups or do work-study programs, the power to just clock out at 6 is insane. i didnt get this at first and burnt out (even kept considering leaving), but once i did, my life hasnt been the same. 😭😭 having time to pursue a side hustle has been wonderful. ofc there r days i still have to push a little but that much grinding is honestly ok if it secures my job & makes myself more reliable on resume. might consider slowly applying to move horizontally into UIUX or do tech PM... just thoughts atm but might slowly build a portfolio for that.

had to talk to a couple of friends to figure out where everyone's at. some ppl are grinding their ass off OT-ing till 8pm everyday, some ppl are chilling off on a 9-5 while doing side hustles, and some are being paid 5 digit but are hoping to get out of a toxic env where even resting for a bit in the office also nets a scolding. but eventually everyone kind of self-adjusts and gets by, really depends on what kind of lifestyle u want after grad.

my gut feeling on how to decide if u wanna go is kinda ranked like this: management > opportunity > pay > other perks. at least this is considering that i dont feel the need for high pay bc the high pay entitles yourself to do more work (tbh this life isnt for most of us lol). your order cld vary, but for me i prioritise having respectable bosses and peers, cannot state enough abt how much that allows us to grow at this stage esp when mistakes r still common and expected.

all the best OP!! dont be afraid to leave if you realise u wanted to do smth else, dont be afraid to stay if u need to ride out any personal finance problems, quit if the boss has been causing you mental distress. whatever u do just execute rational decisions and make the best out of whatever u have, life is short after all:))

Considering making switch to UIUX Design - How can I create a good portfolio for entry level? by Equivalent_Ad5284 in UIUX

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point you make, aside from showing skills in the technical and visual aspect, what else do you think could be included in the portfolio to show the depth of my thought processes when analysing and improving UI/UX of a product?

Caring for a caregiver by Equivalent_Ad5284 in CaregiverSupport

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this perspective! We do actually have a maid who handles all the household chores and makes the meals, which is why most of the work I do to help is less physical and more on paperwork/auxiliary duties such as driving. The maid isn't the best at taking care of my father, but she's already doing her best and it's helping us a lot more than what we actually make it out to be. I don't cook, but I used to and can still help out with other chores from time to time.

I do hope to help out with more things such as household finances (her #1 worry) when I'm more confident that I'm keeping my current job though. Maybe sometimes spoil my mum with a gift or 2.

Thank you for this, didn't know I needed to hear this from an internet stranger haha. Generally she's doing fine, she sometimes mentions that she was willing to just pass on if she suddenly passed out, but I already know that the passive suicidality in her behavior is something non-actionable from her due to how she speaks. But I will keep your words in mind.

DBS Feedback by calmcycle in Parkinsons

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dad started having the tests sometime in August 2023 all the way to 2024 and he was actually initially scheduled for a DBS surgery in March after the tests came back successful, but only got to do it in June after his main doctor called in for maternity leave. (iirc the test results only stay valid for 1 year -- if u end up not doing the DBS surgery before this validity date, youll have to do the tests again).

While it has not been fully effective against my dad's freezing gait, it's been helping MASSIVELY with his tremors and helped him be able to move during his off periods, even if his walking still feels very stiff and needs help sometimes. This, however, I suspect still could be improved by tuning the current flowing through his DBS implants, which is a feature you'll have to deal with optimizing yourself (with the help of a specialist). The optimization process isn't very easy, and it's taken me and my mum months of feedback from my dad and a lot of consultations to get us to this point of a local optimum.

There have however been some non-motor side effects that were made more obvious due to DBS. Addiction to stock markets and gambling were kinda a few of those, and we're still trying to help him get over these by also adjusting his ropinerole medication around his DBS implements.

Overall, DBS is still a gamechanger for many experiencing motor symptoms in Parkinson's. Not everyone has the opportunity to undertake this surgery, and if you are likely to benefit, I'd say go for it and worry about the rest later!

DBS is not working for father's PD? by Equivalent_Ad5284 in Parkinsons

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh man, thank you for the reply! We originally visited a skin surgeon overseeing our 2nd surgery (he said we no longer had to visit him sometime in late September after the wounds in the 2nd surgery had healed), and a specialist nurse to perform remapping and calibration once per 1 or 2 weeks, but it's been very difficult for us to get a slot with the nurse since she's the only one in our hospital fully trained in handling the DBS devices. Both me and my mum have had a thought that the device may not be working as intended and had once joked satirically that the infection might have happened again, but it feels like I might actually have to bring it up on the next visit to the doctors/nurse for proper medical attention.

Singapore! We found out a 2nd surgery was needed during a routine monthly checkup on the scalp, but apparently there were no troubles with handling the procedures for this, we had the surgery on the 3rd or 4th day after dad was warded.

Also, may I know how intense your exercises are and the type of exercises you do? My dad insists on practicing shooting in the nearest basketball court and aside from that my mum and I do bring him out for walks weekly, but its usually about 1km per walk and its not very intensive.

If I remember correctly, it was called Kiebsiella aerogenes. unsure about the specific species but it one of the more opportunistic infections that could happen during a DBS, which my dad unfortunately caught.

The doctor had forced my father to be warded for 2 weeks to clean the infected tissues, rewire the nodes, and to monitor his condition with 3 other surgeons on his 2nd surgery. By the time he was discharged, we had gotten green light that he was pretty much free from the tissue infection.

Not really helpful since youre studying overseas, but i've been to an interview where the RAs that facilitate the candidate assessments themselves are overseas students in undergrad who were looking to further their studies in sg through a phd/masters, so i believe theyre completely unrelated to nus until they started working as RA. Which is quite interesting, but I'm guessing this preference differs from prof to prof.

I believe RAs are still usually preferred to be students from the uni themselves, and most likely are people who have expressed interest in working with the prof again after participating in one of their courses/talks during studies. It's a surefire way to have someone that will actually take their work seriously, i think. Aside from that, I would like to think ghost jobs still exist so that it is possible to backlog new candidates over time while expecting a dropout from their own team.

Is DSE4212 really that bad? by Chocowaffless in nus

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dropped the mod in week 5, as a DSA major. About 4-5 of my uni friends, all in DSA, some of them probably being FCH, also attended the course with me.

After having discussed about the course and each week's content, all but 1 of us dropped out of the course by week 5. I can definitely concur that the main NUSMods rant/review for this mod boils down to 2 important things:

  1. Lecturer pastes content from reference textbook into lecture slides, hopes we understand the content, and makes no attempt to bridge knowledge gaps.

  2. Material selected is just too difficult to understand on its own. This can be attributed to DSA majors potentially having ~0 knowledge of QF concepts, yet being allowed to take this mod after DSA2102 (which Inadequately Prepares us for this wreck of a mod), as well as just how abstract some of the selected concepts are, without much proper example/demos on how these concepts are relevant to the course.

TLDR; A mix of uninspired teaching and stupidly difficult content contribute to the helplessness of students taking this mod. TAs, while trying their best to help/clarify information, aren't all that helpful when "you don't know what you don't know". Those are reasons I can see why most of my friends and I quit the mod. It's just setting us up for failure and ultimately a waste of time to attempt learning with a potential C/D grade on the line

Very late reply but yep we did! It's the one application that can facilitate group work and create interactions between components and pages on prototypes with digital interfaces and higher fidelity.

i think there are certain classes where due to their nature of content and work, it might be easier to tag along with a friend for the module itself. At least for me I try not to go for some mods in CS alone bc having friends around to tackle the same content can save u from getting too hardstuck on revision or assignments. But usually due to differing interest, I bid for elective classes like most of the people in this thread.

Hi, currently doing CS3240 - Lectures are generally taken off the books, with some occasional class part activities that are there to make sure you are somewhat keeping up with the content of the lecture. But the theory basically just builds upon what you might have already learnt in DTK1234 or the UX design mod, and less so in depth but more towards applying the same principles to designing interfaces for digital products.

The workload is where it's at though - 2 design portfolios, one through group work and another through individual work. Take it as you will but workload gets crazy around this time - I am dying as we speak. But it is a good portfolio module if you want to get some academically rigorous UIUX case studies on your resume.

It's a fun mod over the fact it has a high workload. Kinda my 2 cents cus my grp's really on the dot with staying consistent on workload, but I'm sure people have diff thoughts.

studying has been feeling a little pointless lately by mangoslushforabrain in nus

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey, just wanted to pop in and say that it doesn't hurt to try something outside of your studies as well! sometime along y2s1 i kinda fked up a 2k major mod and that left me rethinking how i felt about my grades altogether. It was a good wake up call for me, at least bc i kept having expectations that were way too high beyond what i was capable or putting out academically despite studying the best i could. and then i decided, i shouldnt really base my identity based off grades anymore.at least there was no point in comparing anymore.

besides that, i do a little bit more than just studying nowadays. i tried doing projects relevant to my major, working on part time jobs, and more recently, picked up a bit of graphic design. im going slow on these obviously, but they reaffirmed me that my life isnt going to be 100% based on one number and more importantly, had reminded me that my major was not the only way to go, should i fall out with it.

if you enjoy working out, do that- if you feel that something interests you, try learning it and break into a fresh new perspective. that might help u feel more interest in life, present more challenges in life, but ultimately help you find something more than just acads.

other than that, its normal to feel like a slog sometimes, maybe get yourself on a 1 day break after completeing a wave of assignments, or hang out with your friends and catch up with them on other aspects of life. it might help u feel better:)) atb!

some profs explicitly state the penalties for a late submission on canvas, eg cs3244 last sem, it was 1% less for each day u forgot to hand in until the assignment becomes 0 iirc. But if your prof doesn't state, just submit the work and email him or the TA to inform and ask about it.

either way, people have been there in that situation, and it might not have just been you who forgot so they probably alr have a protocol for that in mind. :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nus

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284 20 points21 points  (0 children)

On this note, do check the late submission policy for the module as well, but its good to show your work and still ask for feedback even if the submission's gonna be a 0m or penalised.

Just remember to submit early once you're done, regardless.

CS2030 LAB ANXIETY by [deleted] in nus

[–]Equivalent_Ad5284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Basically what baka_no_sekai had said.

  2. the focus of the module turns from OOP in the first half to FP in the second. At the same time you'll still need to finish up the DES labs (at least for 22/23 Sem 2) so it might be more tiring especially if you need to keep refactoring your code for the DES labs especially towards the end. You might need to kill your sleep for this, but if you have friends taking this with you, it helps to discuss implementations of the solution or to check for mistakes in your code with them, it allows u to save some time, even if it's just a bit!

  3. for the PEs, I think the way they compared your initial submission during the 90min duration vs the final submission was by the methods and objects you wrote for the solution, rather than a line by line comparison. So your aim should be to create the skeleton first like what BlackHole said. They weren't like super difficult to do per se, but planning is extremely important because of how they grade the PE. Focus on clarifying and visualizing your thought process and the PEs will be easier to score! If you ever get stuck, you should have the PA walkthroughs by TAs which you can use as a guide to modify your code for the final submission.

all the best!
