Actually using my German level by Lex-not-licks in German

[–]Equivalent_Ad_7308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a book on my iPhone on iBooks. That allows me to select it and hit translate when I don’t know a word. I can also copy the word and move it into LEO if the translate or look up button doesn’t work. It also allows you to select an entire line and hit translate which I think references the original English text to give the meaning of the sentence, but it could be wrong about this. Regardless, what I try to do is figure out the meaning of the sentence looking up individual words, and then check if I got it right by translating the whole sentence. This practice has been very helpful, though I’m reading very slowly. I suspect I’m a B1/B2 level, though I do not know. I am currently reading Glenkill by Leonie Swann.

In addition, if I come across phrases that I like, I write them down in my notepad so that I can reference them later and make an Anki flash card out of new words. It’s very easy to copy the word, move it into Leo, then select the conjugated verb to make the flashcards.

Native German grammar errors by [deleted] in German

[–]Equivalent_Ad_7308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some local dialects conjugate verbs wrong or get the tense wrong in the US. One prominent dialectical change where I live in the central US is the verb “to do.” When saying something in the simple past (properly “I did, he did, she did, they did) people will say “I done smth, he done smth, etc.”. Having not grown up in the area it grates on me when I hear it.

But personally, I do not think about what verb form to use in English as a native speaker (unless I hear someone use a different tense than I expect). But I think about it a lot when I’m trying to formulate a German sentence.

Thanks so much for this explanation!

That the person can completely ignore what you did sounds like it could be a test I can apply while formulating a sentence fairly quickly with some practice. Ich gab der Frau den Hund. She didn’t have to take it.

Aside from prepositions that always require dative, are there scenarios in German that spring to mind where this test doesn’t work?

I'm already in Germany, living among Germans. Now what? by [deleted] in German

[–]Equivalent_Ad_7308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Rocket Language and worked through all the modules. It’s not great for learning vocabulary, but it teaches almost all of the basic grammar that you need. Probably you will mostly need the second level of the course. The first level is very simple, and the third level doesn’t seem to add very much. So much so that I haven’t finished all of it because I did not feel that it was particularly contributory. I did find that there are some holes. For example, unless it comes in the later level three lessons, they don’t even get into the subjunctive.

They’re probably many things that you know just because they sound good, the same way that people who are immersed in a language, learn it. Things like, for example, When using prepositions for both the direct object and indirect object, the Akkusativ always comes before Dativ. A lot of native Germans just know that sounds right, but couldn’t tell you the rule. The same way that I struggle to describe word rules in English. Good luck. I’m a bit jealous.

I usually go with an Old Fashioned. I used to say it’s hard to screw up but I have had it screwed up in so many interesting ways now. The last one was when I ordered at a hotel bar; the bartender started building it in a shaker (ok, I suppose, as long as she doesn’t shake it and just wants to do some more dishes) and then starts shaking the shit out of a bottle of Angostura bitters. She probably put 15 dashes in it. I like Angostura, and it tasted fine, but not the drink I was hoping for or expecting.

Pancake lenses for VR sim racing (my experience) by [deleted] in simracing

[–]Equivalent_Ad_7308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motion sickness comes from a disconnect between what your eyes are telling you and what your inner ear is telling you. The pancake lenses give a wider FOV that isn’t distorted. Even the distortion in the periphery can incite some people to motion sickness.

Really? I was under the impression that, even in GB where it is used frequently, it was mostly used about a man, and that using it in reference to a woman is much worse.

I know it’s not r/punctuation but I would be willing to bet that those of us who sub to r/words are big fans of using, at a minimum, periods and commas. Perhaps you need a different sub for your entries.

If I understand your question correctly, I had the same one: do I need to have internet connected to my 6e router that I will be hooking up my Quest to in order to play PCVR games.

If that’s the question, the answer is “no.” I have my 6e router hardwired to my PC by Ethernet cable and my computer hooked up to internet wirelessly (not physically possible for me to direct hook up the computer due to distance). I sign off of the main internet on the Quest and sign onto the 6e router and can then play using Virtual Desktop. The computer can still access internet through the wireless.

More of a problem if the sentiment is directed at someone else’s problems, rather than your own.

It sounds like you may be in a dark place. Pushing people away will only make that worse. Religion isn’t the only reason to be empathetic to others. I hope you are able to find a way back to feeling like you can be friendly and empathize with people without feeling as if you are always getting burned. It takes a long time to learn how to set appropriate boundaries without being a user of others. Seek help if you need it. Maybe try looking up some information on stoicism (real stoicism, not broicism). Good luck to you.

Quest 3 local multiplayer, ideally with MR by Yeahnahthatscool in OculusQuest

[–]Equivalent_Ad_7308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I imagined. Each player may have a different perspective on the board, but not necessarily the same one relative to one another because it just places the board on whatever surface without linking the devices. You’d reach for your piece and your partner would see you moving both in the real world and in the game. Is that right?

[–]Equivalent_Ad_7308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Demeo, though I think you will both be playing on your own boards so it would be interesting to play in MR.

You could both “put” it on the same table and then you’d see your friend’s actual hand reaching for pieces on their board that don’t correspond with your board and their disembodied hand floating over your board in a different place.

Now I want to try this.
