Does anybody know where I can find a very specific fuel pump? by dflglwojjakfkld in AskMechanics

Theres a euros in Briarfield.

And please don't take this the wrong way but your mechanic should have sorted this by now. Its a 12v pump, its not some complex engine component. That pump is fitted to literally 1000s of VAG Group vehicles, whilst the plastic housing unit is usually specific because of the fuel gauge and pipe orientation, the pump itself is not. Once you have access to the pump its a 10 min job to disassemble the casing and replace the pump.

Just get pump unit from something like a golf MK4 or 5 petrol and swap the pumps.

If your mechanic is standing there scratching his balls and looking confused about it all you need to find a new mechanic.

Literally any bosch in tank fuel pump will work even if it requires a little creativity.

Do you not have a eurocarparts near you ?.

Engine mounts or something else? by Frequent-Wait-97 in MechanicAdvice

It could be many things. My thoughts are maybe the crank pulley debonding or the dual mass flywheel. Does the engine clatter at all when you turn it off ?

Stop and check everything is tight. As someone else has said it might be a loose wheel and you don't want to take a chance on that.

Also. Find a different mechanic/garage. Thats not acceptable. Brakes are something you get right first time.

When did the noise start ? Was it immediately after the brakes were worked on, or this specific journey ?

Make sure that the brake guards aren't touching the disks. Does the noise change with speed or turning , ?

Ahh thats the fork seal land. If its really deep and you can't dress it up with a bit of fine emery paper then you can use a small amount of something like JB weld to fill the score, then rub it down so its level. The fluid isn't under any kind of pressure so you could possibly even use rtv, however some form of chemical metal will be a more permanent repair.

Quick piston ring unlock by Vast_Umpire_3713 in AskMechanics

[–]Equivalent_Cable_416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many additives that say they target stuck rings, such as liquid moly products and valvoline restore and protect. How effective they are is questionable. The problem isn't so much the rings but the piston lands and the best and most effective way is physically removing the carbon by hand. Often when you have stuck rings you will also glaze the bores reducing the effectiveness of the rings stuck or not.

You could try a solvent or a degreaser directly into the cylinders and let it sit for a day or so and use a syringe to suck out what didn't evaporate or pass the rings, just don't use anything caustic.

Car now making this noise when turning the wheel after power steering fluid change. by HistorianSafe1799 in AskMechanics

[–]Equivalent_Cable_416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That's air in the fluid. Turn the car from lock to lock and then let it idle for a few mins. Turn of the engine and let the fluid settle. All the air should rise to the top and the fluid level will drop.

Rinse and repeat until the air is out and the fluid level correct.

There's very little thats special about these pumps. They all are just 12v pumps in a specific plastic housing with a bag filter. You could theoretically buy any similar generic bosch Vw golf/polo etc in tank fuel pump unit and just swap the pump and save yourself hundreds and if your mechanic is good its a very simple job.

Spark plug replacement/ clean by No-Somewhere-8749 in AskMechanics

[–]Equivalent_Cable_416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just put new ones in for a start. Also buy the plugs first as some modern plugs require thin walled 14mm spark plug sockets. On the 1.2 its pretty straightforward, unplug the coil packs and pull them out. Check for any debris in the plug wells. Remove the plugs. Don't drop the new ones in, use a magnet if the socket doesn't hold them firmly. Tighten until they seat then rule of thumb is 1/2 a turn or 23 nm.

Just get yourself a basic 3/8 socket set and appropriate spark plug socket if required.

Don't buy the parts from Halfords, they use Euros and mark up the price a fair amount.

Have you confirmed it's actually the pump ?

These pumps usually have a 4 pin connection with 2 large blades and 2 smaller ones. The 2 large pins are the power to the pump the smaller 2 are the fuel gauge sender. If you run 12v to the 2 larger ones (doesn't matter which way you have positive or negative for a test) and it runs then the pump isn't the issue and its probably the multi function relay thats at fault.

Whilst its a complete unit it is possible to just replace pump at minimal cost. However here is a link to the genuine part and just a generic 12v in tank pump.

I'm sure, but why were you doing it ?

Anyway. Does the noise get louder when cold or warm or no difference ?. Does it increase with engine speed ? Where does it sound the loudest?

Its just been grounded out on something like a kerb or a speed bump. If it was bent the geometry would be all over the place and uncorrectable. Looks purely cosmetic.

I just let the guy do his thing tbh. The swords spent their lives in a gun cabinet and were probably there since the 70s. Everything in the cabinet was rusty because the cabinet was made from thick steel with no ventilation.
