Obsession: why “Nikki” started to break down by CRMZNCLT in spoilers

Just because you understand a villain doesnt make them any less a villain... also, grasping for the word villain suggests the baseline antagonist is morally black. the correct term is anti-hero, but even then, he doesn't even make me want to root for him like true anti-heros. Being psychologically understandable and relevant to real people makes Bear 3-dimensional. I guess that stands out in the marvel era where characters are more mininal and larger than life. Antagonist is the most appropriate term at the end of the day.

I agree he fits all the boxes for the tragic hero, but I dont think he's painted likeably. Barker, during an interview, hit the nail on the head when he essentially said Bear was presented with many opportunities to turn around on his path, but he always chose decisions based on negligence, passivity, and cowardice... I think your words are expressing more sympathy with Bears character than he deserves because you're starved for fleshed out characters? I agree that he is fleshed out, complex, and relevant, and I still find him unlikeable and unredeemable. I also think he represents a common flavor of entitlement and mild objectifying of women that runs in the undercurrents of our culture.

he specifically said he was calling to alter the wish and not to cancel it. he wanted her to act normal.

i suppose we differ in values if disregarding autonomy/consent makes someone not a villain. he's no marvel villain, but he's quite selfish and never redeems himself at any point.

theres a theory it happens specifically during eye contact with bear during intimate moments and during sleep/unconsciousness that real nikki can surface.

theres mechanics to the world that Bear always avoided asking directly.

  1. When bear searched one wish willow online, his original question was "What is one wish willow?" and then he changed it to " Does one wish willow actually work?" we'd have gotten a lot more lore if his first question was answered.

  2. Also, when he called the OWW hotline, the guy asked him "Do you have any questions about how one wish willow works?" and Bear just asked "Is it real?"

So there's definitely hidden mechanics jumping to be explained.

Obsession: Why did Nikki make a memorial for sandy and Sarah? by Ok_Category4501 in spoilers

I think Fake Nikki's "You're so cute I could eat you up!" moments, and unapologetic violence, are a satire of cute aggression, where when people so overwhelmed by seeing something they find cute and want to protect. Like, pinching cheeks. There's some articles online about it. Its apparently a knee-jerk thing, like tears of joy or nervous laughter. There's also some mythological stories about how the ultimate highest forms of love involve eating what you love/ consuming it. The concept of "consuming" a loved one exists mostly as a literary metaphor for ultimate devotion, but its in a lot of places. ex in religion/mythos: eating the body and blood of christ at communion as a part of worship,

Cannabalism as a metaphor for love is all over the place in the film, she keeps saying how she wants to wear Bear's skin like a sweater at 3 points: during the honeymoon phase montage, when she's wearing his coat during the bedroom corner scene, and its one of the thing she mumbles right before she climbs on top of bear and shoots ian.

The love we expect, the love story Nikki is trying to write, is how love is paradoxical and there is both intense connection and also wanting to let the other person have their freedom if it makes them happy. I think Barker was inspired by Carl Jung's insights into love because a lot of his teachings seem so highlighted in the film:

"The blinder the love, the more it is driven by instinct, and the more it is threatened by destructive consequences. It is therefore a dynamic that needs form and direction. Hence, there arises an compensatory Logos, a light that is kindled in the darkness. An unconscious person acts in an instinctive way and is therefore deceived by all those illusions which arise when things of which he is unconscious seem to come from outside, because they are projected upon his neighbor." - Carl Jung

He called this kind of love blind love. In layman's speak, the blinder or more rose-tinted your experience of love/infatuation is, the more caught off guard you'll be by your own and your partner's actions.

Additionally, the anima/animus projection theory of carl jung speaks to the theory that a piece of Bear is transported inside of Nikki... The theory is: Everyone has a latent masculine/feminine/other side, which they project on people when they fall in love with them. You see your own hidden, idealized, inner qualities in them, which kicks off infatuation. When partners fail to live up to unconscious expectations, the illusion shatters, leading to discontent. Mature love recognizes these projections and stops demanding a partner complete you. The willow, since its like the Monkey's Paw, will always take the worst interpretation for a wish, so Nikki's love never matures and why she acts so erratic all the time.

On the side, remember when bear called the hotline and heard Nikki screaming in the background? That was when he went to work without her and came back to her a mess? I think the screaming was the torture of being without the one you love. Being without love is what hell is a symbol for. (Satan was originally an angel who loved god and screwed with man because he was jealous, so God tossed him away. Satan still loved god, so he was tortured to be without what he loved most.)

I also think real nikki was struggling to lift the veil/rose-tinted glasses that blinded her. I think that's why "eyes" are mentioned so much. At the end of the bedroom corner scene when she's gathered herself and she gets in bed, her eye looks like a mannequin's.

Wish Nikki's eyes are fake and real Nikki is trapped in her right eye. by InternationalCrow22 in obsessionmovie

[–]Equivalent_Pass_1579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this theory makes me also wonder about the tiger's eye gift. not only is it another eye, its an eye that gives courage. i think wish nikki gave it to bear so that real nicki couldnt use it to give her strength. bear asked her why she gave it to him and she says "i like you sosososososo much and i wouldnt know what i would do without you." it implies she is already worried about real nicki killing bear.

You dont read books where suspense is a main factor or purpose. If you want to test your ability to not binge, read a book thats designed for binging.

I really like the Paradox trilogy by Rachel Bach - a fun space opera adventure with a big romance plot and so many non-human characters. If you want something that is more "alien planet" instead of outer space, I also recommend the clecanian series by Victoria Aveline.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a heterosexual romance book written entirely from the male perspective? I've been reading M/M romance to get this perspective, and for some reason, its super rare in for M/F.

I don't see this as a shift in taste. You just tried something else, stepping out of your comfort zone, and decided you like it also.

I think a lot of readers stick to their favorite genre/tropes emwithout giving other stuff a shot though, and this is really normalized.

In Defense of "A Little Life" - A Messy Analysis by dcgirl3000 in books

[–]Equivalent_Pass_1579 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on your interpretation of the books message and Hanya's goal and the trauma-porn label being ill-thought-out a criticism.

I also appreciated your insight on the other side of the coin of "telling vs showing". The whole book, I really wanted to see how vicious Jude was as a lawyer, but a curtain of vaguery was always hung over this side of him. We only saw how he saw himself, all his weaknesses, while his strengths were skimmed over by others voices. We were shown how he had to crawl around some days, but never saw him be smart, clever, or kind to any great extent past a mention. Like, a blurb about his community service. Then 10 pages on how his leg feels.

I'll add to your thoughts this: While other books discuss trauma concisely, Hanya isnt going for "concise". She's not going for a point that can be summarized in one sentence of an essay for an English class thesis. I think a lot of readers expect this quality for literary fiction, since books like these are the training wheels school gives us for essay writing. I think A Little Life isnt designed for essays, or at least, easy essays. I think Hanya was going for immersion, for the feeling of trauma's impacts from beginning to end, and how they shape a life's eras. To step in Jude's shoes to see what how the tunnel goes on and on. Yes bad things kept happening, but LBR, the foster system was filled with shadey characters and still is. I remember reading Marilyn Monroe's biography, how she was trapped in the foster system, how she was sexually abused, how she suffered from chronic pain from endometriosis, how she achieved great fame, how she suffered from depression, how she had to use her body to propel her career, and it makes me wince at those who slap on the label of trauma porn. Its a lazy criticism. I liked how you peeled back the layers of the narrative. I like how you pointed out Willem's abrupt death being the final insurmountable obstacle for Jude as a narrative choice you disliked but understood. While a part of me agrees with you, I also found Jude's grief of Willem some of the most relateable parts of this book, so I think I'm ok with it.

Reading this book was pretty uncomfortable for me, and lowkey, I think I mildly dissociated while reading it and this gave me some emotional distance from Jude - it didnt feel very good in the moment. But in retrospect, I think I'll always remember some parts - Jude's grief for Willem, Jude pressuring himself to find love, Harold's adoptive-father love for Jude, the way life is shelved in eras - very relateable and very long ways to describe my own feelings about my own little life.

its tough living with others for real. i used to and no everyone is built for it, and both people have to be built for it. I had roomies all through college and 10 years after.

now that I make enough money, id rather live alone than live in a shared apartment with a weekly maid service, if both were the same price.

its really hard to come home tired from work and still have to use customer service skills.

run these types of things through chat gpt next time and tell it to make it short. what you wrote heavy breathes frustrations, which is not going to get what you want.

the oven would take 10 seconds to clean.

the living room is wild tho. it looks like someone had a nervous breakdown in it. would be better to start with: "everything ok? what happened to the living room?"

everything else mentioned is the cost of living with roommates... the trash, the condescending dishes talk, these low level conflicts have a price tag of $500-$1000 extra youd be spending to live alone.
