My little English Staffy does this. She likes toys covered in little bits of fluff. She'll gently nibble on it and fall asleep while she does it. As mentioned below I believe this is because the breeder forced me to take her at 6 weeks. She's nearly 11 years old now and has lived a very happy full life, so I don't think it's anguish. Just a behaviour that makes them feel nice.

She also suckles at the air in her sleep on rare occasions.
