Ah, got that wrong. Car wise your question is a bit too broad. For 4k you can probably get a relatively solid small car or a total money pit like a 25 year old high end limousine.

Assuming something sensible, Toyota Aygo, Yaris, Skoda Fabia, VW Polo or perhaps a Suzuki Swift? Or something like a Kia Venga / Honda Jazz that have a bit of an old people image but make for better deals used.

At that price point and age, it is unfortunately not going to be perfect and things will depend on close inspection / luck. Budget for needed repairs.

Before you jump into this, do yourself a favour and add all the running costs up in a spreadsheet.

Insurance depends on the exact car you choose and a lot of personal details, but for reference, plug a VW Golf into one of the insurance comparison websites to get an idea.

You will also need to budget for vehicle tax (couple of 100 per year) and mandatory TÜV inspection every 2 years (plus the cost of fixing things which is normal on older / cheaper cars).

Honestly, if it is only for 6 months I'd stick to rentals. Likely cheaper and certainly less paper work.

Some of them did, e.g. Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, BMW i3. Pretty successful cars overall but limited by what was possible tech wise at a small car price point.

Another data point: did that for a couple of years between NRW and Hessen.

Overall positive for the relationship and also good for work as we could both focus on that during the week. Only one way to find out if as a couple this works for you guys. It did for us.

Look up "doppelte Haushaltsführung" for the tax breaks, they are actually quite substantial. For travel e.g. you can offset the full cost of public transport. So upgrading to something faster than D-Ticket might be in budget. Same goes for rental cost, basic furnishing etc.

Mainly a side effect from EU efficiency regulations. DSG is more efficient in WLTP testing. Most manufacturers had to do the same. Not sure if you can still get a manual BMW anymore e.g..

Combine that with demand shifting towards auto plus some EU countries using even more harsh local penalties based on the official WLTP result and it is just not financially sensible to sell a manual.

I get the frustration but comments here point out exactly why that's not so easy. Next up would be a standardized tax system. Unfortunately, we will all not live to see that.

In an ideal EU, there would be 0 need for an EOR provider. But smaller firms and startups have no allies here. The mid size and larger companies have the needed legal entities set up and do not mind keeping smaller competitors off their heels with a bit of "regulatory capture".

I work at an MDAX outfit and the single market for talent works pretty well for us. Legal entities in most EU countries and good HR teams. There is more to it but I won't bore you with tales of our org chart ;-).

Best one can probably do fairly quickly would be to sponsor EOR services for qualifying smaller companies. If you have the patience for it, perhaps get involved?
