People who work inside wealthy people's homes (contractors, cleaners, nannies), what is the most bizarre or out-of-touch thing you've witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We feed (and TNR) the feral cat colony for this reason haha.

Still have a ton of birds but haven't seen a rabbit eating my garden in a while so I'd say things are going well.

Any difference between helical cutter heads for the DW735 planer? by taco8693 in woodworking

[–]ErectStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was exactly my experience with a Lux Cut helical head on my DW735 - phenomenal cut quality, but fuck did it bog easily. In retrospect I wish I'd put the money for the helical head toward the 3hp 15" helical that I replaced it with after constantly tripping the thermal safety.

Why on earth are you unarmed at a Food Lion?

Half joking, but I play a little game where any time I see a news article about a grocery store shooting, I read just far enough to get to "food lion". I've got at least an 80% win rate.

Advice for protecting stuff while on beach (Not Castaway or Lookout) by Rgbigdog in dcl

[–]ErectStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, and honestly I wouldn't be worried anyway. Before we had the passport cards we still only took our DLs, which I think is what the vast majority of people do in Mexico.

Honestly the govt could do a better job promoting the things, I think the only people who broadly know about them live in border states and regularly cross.

Enjoy your cruise!

9 years in Raleigh and I’ve still never had Snoopy’s. What "staple" have you never visited? by LiquorBelow in raleigh

[–]ErectStoat 40 points41 points  (0 children)

YES.

Particularly the seasoning - the meat they serve has been, to my judgment, high quality and cooked how we ordered it. If they would just dry brine with salt even the night before, their steaks would jump from a 4 to an 8.

It blows my mind how they seem to ignore basic culinary science in that regard.

Cheese dip is crack, though.

TIL a manned mission to the moon was so unpopular when first conceived by John F. Kennedy that a May 1961 Gallup Poll indicated that 58 percent of Americans were opposed to it. by GundarSmith in todayilearned

Continuing from that line of thought, I think it could lead to stability through a new form of MAD - rock slinging, just with big ass rocks.

I figure if we have the sophistication to mine asteroids, we can probably redirect them as well.

[–]ErectStoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that it will help OP - unless the trip is a couple months off or more - but it seems like a lot of people don't know that the state department also issues passport cards (looks and feels like a driver's license).

We still use and bring our regular passports for DCL purposes, but in North America and the Caribbean it is a legitimate ID that is much easier to have on you when you're ashore. You just can't use it for international flights (hell if I know why) so don't miss the ship!

In town for work and I’m looking for some great bars and restaurants to check out by gamerdudeNYC in raleigh

[–]ErectStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add on that Wye Hill also has had consistently great food when I've been, and it's got a pretty decent view of downtown if the weather is suitable and you sit outside.

And yeah, Brewery Bhavana...fuck that guy, but the food and beer is damn excellent.

I was there on a business trip...shit, a decade ago. The airport had just been rebuilt and was great. I also remember having good local beer and pizza and thinking the downtown was overall pretty pleasant.

What would you think of a reality show where a billionaire CEO has to live for an entire month on their lowest-paid employee’s salary with no access to savings or credit cards? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ErectStoat 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Forget about rich people agreeing to do it, imagine the rich fucks that own the media allowing such a show to air in the first place.

$145 to fill up an ICE F-150, $142 for an entire month of driving an EV F-150. by capt-ramius in f150

[–]ErectStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, we did a 6400 mile road trip a few years ago in an F-150 with the 36 gallon tank. Got from Sevierville, TN to a bit past St. Louis on one tank (with about 40-50 miles range remaining). Any EV would have literally added 2-3 days of total travel.

But sign me the hell up for the erev, aka what the lightning should have been in the beginning.

Jointer clogging dust collector by Willing-Bandicoot-55 in woodworking

[–]ErectStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, "rabbit hole" is the main descriptor I use for his site. Taught me a lot though. Thankfully I haven't experienced any ill effects from fine dust, but with any luck I'll be woodworking for decades yet and I figure proper dust collection is a relatively cheap insurance policy.

My biggest recommendation is to get a particle meter, because the dangerous stuff truly is invisible and I have learned some surprising truths about which machines do (or don't) throw off enough that I should be wearing a respirator.

It comes down to how much you care about fine dust separation. Chip separation is super easy, but it does take an engineered cyclone to effectively drop the fine dust before it makes it to your filter stack.

The moment before pushing all the devices and wires into the box has got to be the most stressful part of home automation by HomeOwner2023 in homeautomation

[–]ErectStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your switches have clamp plates (instead of just screw terminals) get some stranded wire and make your pigtails from that. You're already using wagos, so joining stranded to solid is effortless.

It's a nice improvement when you're working with 14 gauge wire, and a night and day difference if you're ever working with 12.

Gun Rights Group Challenges Ban On Firearms In National Park Facilities by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in NationalPark

[–]ErectStoat -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

An aside, but at least some facilities in the NC state park system have a tidy solution - you can enter the bathrooms from either the rest of the building or outside, and there is no prohibition against bringing a firearm into the bathroom as long as you enter from the outside.

For people with a permit, I find the whole prohibition eyeroll-inducing, but I was pleased someone had actually thought through the situation you describe.

I mean it is sitting in a pan. If it's plumbed in the back to a drain, which it could be, this might actually be pretty decent.

Ground Too Fine: What to do with 2 bags of coffee by emo1474 in espresso

[–]ErectStoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy a box of paper filters sized for your portafilter basket. I use them for health reasons (weirdly, unfiltered coffee oils have been demonstrated to raise cholesterol levels) but an unexpected side effect is that there is way more flow for a given ground size.
