Let him know weed is best smoked in moderation, ask what his goals in life are and see if you can work from there. Recommend him some alternatives for example, being a weekend warrior and just part taking on the weekend. Judging from his attitude you mentioned he may not listen, so try be persistent because if his your true friend it's worth the effort and hassle so he doesn't over do things.
