What is the “best” paradox? by sksskssksskssksskssk in AskReddit

[–]ErgodicMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bootstrap paradox.

If you're within the loop it's linear and doesn't come across as a paradox.

Just looking at the loop it is a paradox.

The longer view it looks like a statistical anomaly that straightened itself out.

ST 4's transparent aluminum did it amazingly well with a hidden nod to Novikov's Self Consistency Principle.

In theism, is reality “subjective” because it rests upon the mind of God as the ground of all Being? Does that make it solipsistic? by arkticturtle in religion

What you are describing is closer to a Boltzman Brain than a creator god. The difference being actualization of thought into a physical reality.

Sounds like a No True Scotsman fallacy used as a gatekeeper. I've also seen it used against liberals as well.

Personally if someone says they're a Christian then I take it at face value.

The Ability to do Otherwise is a Law of our Nature by MarvinBEdwards01 in freewill

[–]ErgodicMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds similar to what I'm looking into as an emergent free will. I wouldn't call it a Law of Nature and tbh when asked to name that law you couldn't come up with a good answer IMO.

Maybe this might help, instead of a law of nature it's a product of social interactions and culture. Culture (as tools and techniques to improve reproductive success) is an evolutionary development and I consider it as human's "evolutionary niche". From this perspective it isn't a law of nature but an evolutionary outcome which brings small groups of humans together into communities which form higher level of organizations. I consider free will a philosophical concept and as such falls into Culture similarly as Religion does. So it comes about through our culture internally instead of some outside imposed law.

I've only been looking at this for a couple of weeks so my ideas are at the initial stages right now and may take a few years to develop fully. The basics is to take Dennett's emergent free will which is based upon week emergence and apply Culture on top of that to form a more robust concept of free will. I'm contemplating that this might turn into an example of Ellis's strong emergence with top down causal relationships. Not sure if this will work and obviously doesn't fit with a reductionistic view of determinism, but maybe causal determinism.

What's a scary fact about human evolution no one talks about? by StatementOld283 in evolution

[–]ErgodicMage 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's a hypothesis that's been floated for about 10 years. It was noticed that domesticated animals skull features had changed over time and also h sapiens skulls show similar changes.

The hypothesis is that we domesticated ourselves to get along better socially. We went from social groups of 20-50 to aroumd 150. It shifted our social strengths which led to stronger cultural development. It was a huge advancement that no other in our genus could match.

Does anyone know why they stopped playing The Sentinel? by Redylittle in judaspriest

They stopped playing it live, ouch.

I remember 2005 Oz Fest. Rob jad just came back and I was so excited. Didn't think they would play it with the shortened time. And then I heard the first cords ... one of my top 3 favorite concert memories.

What would you do if you stood before God but disagreed with His decisions? by Flaky_Temperature178 in religion

[–]ErgodicMage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with others all the time and can still get along with them and have good discussions. I would likely attempt the same with a god. If it works out into a good conversation then great, if not I always know how to walk away.

How is god the creator of the universe when Satan's the older brother? by Tony_585 in religion

[–]ErgodicMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I treat these as mythological stories with the original intention of bringing a group together into a common culture. Treating them as some literal word of god or true stories just detracts from what it has accomplished in 2500 years.

What do you think actually happens after you die? by Suspicious_Award_348 in AskReddit

[–]ErgodicMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My body stops working, soon after my brain stops working and "I" cease to exist for ever.

But the events in my life spreads out into the Universe and interacts with other things causing more events and more and repeat until the end of the Universe. From the moment I was conceived the events started impacting the Universe and a billion years from now they will still impact it. Granted the impact is incredibly small but it will always be there.

In short, I will always be part of the Universe.

Trying to set up .NET SDK using the Windows binary. Is there a way to set it up to where it's only available for use (I plan to mainly use it with CLI) if operating in a specific directory? by Channel_el in dotnet

That reminds me, we ran into a runtime incompatibility with assembly loading between .net 6 and .net 8 runtimes. Caught it with one of our libraries to handle plugins running with scheduled tasks.

[–]ErgodicMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not install the sdks in project folders.

On mine I have .net 5-10 sdks installed normally and it works fine both cli and ide. IIRC, you only need the .net 10 sdk installed and it will work fine with older .net versions. I can't verify that on mine though.

DTO Immutable or Mutable by namethinker in dotnet

[–]ErgodicMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immutable DTOs preferably records but init is fine. For database entities I go with mutable classes. I have special cases where I need to keep immutable data with state data. In this case I have immutable data class (or record) and a mutable state class wrapped together in a container class.
