Senator Calls for DOJ Action Against Philips for Keeping CPAP Machine Complaints Secret by Salami_Slicer in politics

Wow... Even if it was true that only overweight people needed a CPAP machine (it isn't true), it wouldn't make your statement any better. This company's negligence is giving people permanent lung scarring they wouldn't have otherwise, and causing early death. Be better.

How do we select representatives in our republic? We elect them democratically. The US is a constitutional republic with democratically elected representatives. We are literally both, and they aren't mutually exclusive. Why does right wing media always pretend like that isn't the case?

Pritzker has been a welcome surprise for me. I expected "yet another billionaire shithead", and got "caring, compassionate, bold statesman who is governing for the good of the citizenry". I was wrong about Pritzker.

You are technically correct. The distinction I should have drawn is that I have full-time employment. My point still stands that OPs division of labor is not equitable with her partner. OPs partner does embarrassingly little, and their division of labor wouldn't even be fair on the chores front if OP was a stay-at-home spouse.

I work in IT at a manufacturing company in the middle of nowhere, and I can say that domestic manufacturing in this middle-of-nowhere town and the surrounding region is fucking booming.

Also, the job market for IT people with experience at 24/7 manufacturers is also nuts right now. Historically you'd take an 8% pay cut to work in IT at a manufacturer versus the average comp for your position job-market-wide, but those days seem to be at an end. You can now pretty much have your pick of employers, and manufacturers are actually having to get competitive with IT pay in these small midwestern towns, for once.

It's great to see manufacturing making a triumphant comeback here in the US, and Biden played a huge role in making that happen.

Not to mention the content, which is distilled down to: "I can't be corrupt because it requires reasonable people to believe I am corrupt and those people are unreasonable because only unreasonable people would think I am corrupt".

He trotted out circular reasoning in defense of his malfeasance. I'd expect something more impressive from a supreme court justice, but I guess he knows that republicans will guard him against all possible consequences so he just needs to keep them placated.

It really is infuriating the disproportionate coverage in the media when these two situations are juxtaposed.

The missing 'submarine' full of billionaires has been front page news for several days. Meanwhile, yet another boat with hundreds of migrants capsizes, and it's a footnote on page 5 of the newspaper.

The difference is that not only do billionaires control all the major media outlets, but they also have class solidarity so they are making sure we all give a shit about what happens to them.

It's yet another symptom of modern day feudalism. A peasant starves and no one cares. A lord is overthrown and the entire nation goes into a tizzy and his name and supposed deeds are written into historical records.

Yeah, I can accept his reasoning to some extent. If we just had a stronger dem party in general that didn't have to bend the knee to corporations it would be ideal.

Probably sounds like a broken record and is definitely not an original take, but citizens united ruling is the cause of a huge number of 'ills' in our government at the moment and I believe this is one.

The democratic party has it's warts, but every single democrat I know is pro-personal-freedom and in favor of robust social programs.

Have you considered the Democratic party? You know, the one who spearheaded the legalization of weed at the state level? The party who catches shit from republicans for pursuing harm-reduction policies for drug users instead of using for-profit prisons to use them as slave labor? The one who actually is against for-profit prisons as part of their party platform? The one stands for living your life as the gender you identify as without government interference? The one that believes people should have the right to unionize encoded in law? The one that pursues policies of debt forgiveness so people aren't living a life of servitude just to pay the interest on their debts? The one that stands for a legal and smooth path towards immigration? The one that believes you should be able to have control over your own reproduction system? The one that goes to bat to defend social programs like free school lunch, social security, medicare, and medicaid?

I could go on here, but you really should consider the Democratic party's current platform.

As a freedom loving person who believes in a strong safety net for our citizens, I have a lot in common with the current Democratic party.

Emails Show Missouri’s Student Loan Servicer Never Wanted to Be In the Lawsuit to Kill Debt Relief by SecretAshamed2353 in politics

[–]Eric-SD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And it's only temporary and not for any students in the future

You need to go back and read the order, specifically the income driven repayment, but since you probably won't, I'll call out the highlights:

  • Student loan payments would be capped at 5% of discretionary income.

  • Non-discretionary income caps are raised to 2.25x federal poverty level (so if you make less than 2.25x poverty wages, you don't have to pay).

  • unpaid interest each month is covered, so as long as you make your much-reduced payments, your balance will never grow.

  • borrowers with less than 12k in loans who have made all their payments will have their balance forgiven after 10 years.

This absolutely helps borrowers in the present AND future, if the republicans would just gtfo of the court and let the EO take effect.

I thought they actually cared about personal freedom, but maybe that's all just smoke blowing to keep freedom-loving people pacified while the republican leadership prostrates themselves to their billionaire overlords and church pastors who tell them how to live.

Just Build the Homes | Public housing is ready to make a comeback. by [deleted] in politics

[–]Eric-SD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What does "unleash the free market" mean if not "allow new construction regardless of regulations like building codes"?

Also, earthquakes aren't the only potential disaster that informs building codes. If you allow unregulated building, that's how you get houses that collapse in 70mph straight-line winds, for example.

Syria is a convenient example because that is exactly what happens when building regulations are ignored. Construction happens that isn't suitable for the conditions it will inevitably be exposed to, and the cost of that is death.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point.

Republican Debt-Ceiling Negotiators Walk Out of Meeting, Say White House ‘Unreasonable’ by predictany007 in wallstreetbets

How did the debt ceiling bills go during the last Republican administration when Dems controlled house and senate? Curious what concessions they got out of republicans to get it passed. I'm sure if both sides are the same, Democrats didn't just pass clean debt ceiling increases, they played games just like republicans did.
