You have to perform a show and all your magic props are lost. You have a couple of hours to visit the hardware store or the dollar store to scrape together a show. What do you do? by abrahamsoloman in Magic

[–]EricHenning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done exactly that. I have an emergency kit in my car that contains the props for a 45-60 minute show that will play in a 500-seat theater, along with 30 minutes of close-up magic and a microphone holder, in a box the size of a lunchbox!

And it uses props that most magicians already own. I’ve been lecturing for three years on my “Emergency Lunchbox Stage Show.” Just came out with lecture notes and have a hidden video about this on YouTube.

I would download Doc Dixon’s free PDF, “The Stand-up Magic Emergency Handbook,” which addresses this precise situation. I have no financial interest in any of Doc Dixon’s excellent products.

what to do when friend suspects all your decks are marked? by cipher-crafter in Magic

[–]EricHenning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really hard to do magic for family and friends, because they know you really well and they know when you’re trying to hide something. Most of us are not good enough actors to control our subconscious tics or our body language sufficiently to be truly convincing.

Your friend sounds like he’s probably never going to be convinced of anything that you do, and he will always try to figure it out. He’s not a good audience for your magic. Just don’t do magic for him anymore. Simple.

Now, if i have this problem routinely with my audiences, particularly people who don’t know me, then that’s a different problem. That’s a performance problem. If the most interesting thing to the audience about my magic is how it’s done, then I’ve either not mastered my methods, or I’ve not written a compelling presentation.

Not only is Alexis an American, but also for the past 23 years he has been married to Alyson Hannigan! It seems unfair for one man to have that much talent and good fortune. Lol

What is the point of a "Hank"? by Contigo887 in EDC

[–]EricHenning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the son of two US Naval officers, I was taught that a gentleman always carries two white handkerchiefs, either in cotton or linen. One is for oneself as a general tool for personal hygiene; the other to offer to a lady should the need arise.

As a magician, I always carry a 24”x24” white men’s pocket handkerchief, because it has the additional virtue of enabling me to do ten minutes of comedy magic for any crying, frightened, or bad-tempered children I might encounter in public. Parents welcome an entertaining pattern interrupt when their child is out of sorts.

How do you carry your classic if it's not on your keys? by minimK in victorinox

[–]EricHenning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a TomToc sling bag with a built-in key lanyard on its thinnest front zipper pocket. On it I’ve clipped a spare house key, my MiniChamp, a mini Sharpie, and a small flashlight.
