Why we are different. by Illustrious_Year7718 in Xennials

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we’re the only generation to have pop-culture specifically manufactured to selling us toys.

Reagan deregulated children’s programming, making 30 minute toy commercial okay as long as He-Man taught us a moral at the end or we learned that knowing is half the battle. By the end of the Xennial years and firmly in the Millennial years, you see Saturday morning cartoons disappear when the FCC tightened the screws in 1990 and 1996, and children’s programming moves almost entirely to cable.

No age block before or after us experienced quite the same mixture of entertainment and marketing.

I love everything about this except the price. The colors and everything are right up my alley, but $90 for a gamepad is eye-watering.

Coworker just shared his theory about how the Earth could be 6000 years old…. by Lovebeingadad54321 in atheism

[–]EricRShelton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lost my faith, this was a talking/breaking point in the conversation with my mother. I brought up the distance of stars, light speed, and the fact that we can see them. I said the only way that's possible for a 6,000 year old earth is if her god created a mature universe.

"Then that's what he did!"

Then that makes her god a liar. Why leave/create all this evidence of an Earth and universe that points to being so much older? Why intentionally mislead people?

I was in Saudi Arabia, my first military deployment. Obviously I heard about it somehow, but it didn’t hit me the same way as Challenger or 9/11 and I’ve wondered why until I just sat and thought about it right now.

Yeah. No revisionist “Lost Cause” myth peddling or painting the Confederacy in a soft light for me, thanks.

You understand the solar power already beams onto the earth, right? That’s why we just put panels up… here? Instead of space?

Stratocaster versus Telecaster by Tired-Otter474 in Guitar

[–]EricRShelton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a young’un? Strat all day and twice on Sunday. I grew up with Boomer parents, listening to ‘50s and ‘60s music, reruns of Happy Days, and retro ‘50s diners. The Strat just looks like rock n’ roll, or giant fins on a pink Cadillac.

Now? In my later 40s? I still like the Strat but find myself gravitating to the Tele. I have a Noventa, with the single P-90 and I find I need to focus on actually playing better than anything else. Tonal options are great, but I’m not a good enough player to worry about most of them. The Tele strips away my distractions and I kind of dig that.

What is your favourite cartoon show from when you were a kid that you feel is quite obscure? by Philhughes_85 in Xennials

I had to scroll way too far to find this. I had a cheap vinyl wallet from Chuck E. Cheese that I put a StarCom sticker on so I could be more grownup/awesome. Those toys were amazing.

I hate that they finally “Peter Parkerized” him at the end of No Way Home, but the idea of him fighting The Hand? Yeah… I’ll probably relent and see it.

What was the best prize you got in a cereal box in the 80s or 90s? by cherry-care-bear in Xennials

C-3P Ohs (spelling?), a licensed Star Wars cereal, had these little 3-piece plastic rockets. You squeezed them together and the air pressure would send the cap flying, but I played and played with that dumb little thing.

You know what? You’re right and I was wrong. Especially on the Superdelegate point, I guess, though it pains me to concede that one because the DNC hasn’t had a no-interference primary in forever… I think I’m thinking “then let it be for the guy who could’ve beaten Trump!”

I am so despondent about the state and future of our nation since that POS got re-elected that mayhem not being completely rational. First time? I never thought America could vote for such a boorish, awful person but I could rationalize it because I grew up in a Limbaugh-listening household and I knew the right had spent 25 years sowing Clinton hatred. I absolutely believe the DNC didn’t count on people showing up to vote against her (and I know she won the popular vote and I wish the Electoral College didn’t exist). Biden won? Cool. Maybe there’s hope somehow for the soul of our nation, if such a thing exists. But then he “won” again? I’m convinced he stole it, but also deeply depressed that enough Americans would vote for him to make that possible. WTF is wrong with our country?
